MAGLEV
SUPERCONDUCTOR PHYSICS
S.C. Maglev train works on the principle of quantum levitation or superconducting levitation.
With tracks of magnetic coils and propulsion on the principle of faradays laws and EMI, the SC
Maglev train is the futuristic train which has reached a world record of highest speed ever –
603km/hr.

Quantum Levitation and Superconductor

Superconductivity is a phenomenon of exactly zero electrical resistance and expulsion of magnetic fields occurring in certain
materials when cooled below a characteristic critical temperature. It was discovered by Dutch physicist Heike Kamerli Onnes.
Materials exhibiting this property are called superconductors, which on a certain temperature levitate due to Meissner’s effect

The Meissner effect is a phenomenon in In an EDS Maglev system with superconducting

superconductors where they exhibit perfect magnets, the superconductors experience the
diamagnetism in the presence of an external Meissner effect when cooled below their critical
magnetic field. When a superconductor is cooled temperature Tc. This results in the exclusion of
below its critical temperature and placed in a the magnetic field lines from the interior of the
magnetic field, it expels the magnetic flux from its superconductors, and only a very minute lines
interior, resulting in the exclusion of magnetic pass through. Many holes or pillars(hollow) are
fields. This expulsion of magnetic flux creates a formed known as vortex regions where there is
levitation effect, commonly known as the Meissner nothing but vacuum. The exclusion causes the
effect train to levitate over a magnetic track.

PROPULSION AND
GUIDANCE
These trains use magnetic fields for
propulsion and guidance. Guidance is
achieved by placing some coils along
the track or guide way which monitor
the amount of induced current in each
of the side of the superconducting coil
present in the unit of S C Maglev. If the
induced current on one side dominates,
and the train shift to the left side, the
coil on the right produces more flux so
the current is balanced and the train
comes back to its original position.
The propulsion is actually, governed by
the N-S coils along the guideway which
Attract and repel the superconducting
coil – acting as a magnet itself. The
resultant force of all these attractions
and repulsions is thus forward or
backward depending upon the
polarities of the coils attached.
