CHAPTER 1 INTRODUCTION TO THE STUDY

Background of the Study and Theoretical Framework

Technology has already transformed online business

transactions into an infinite marketplace where

conducting business has become more convenient and

efficient for both vendors and vendees (Solas, 2021).

Online sales are a rapidly growing element for many

businesses. According to the Department of Trade and

Industry (DTI) in the Philippines, the number of online

sellers increased from 1,700 in March 2020 to 93,318 in

January 2021. Solas (2021) states that consumers are

increasingly turning to online shopping in the face of

pandemic restrictions, as entrepreneurs embrace the

digital phenomenon for online shopping even more.

E-commerce websites such as Lazada and Shopee are at the

forefront of these online shopping platforms, with

expected surges in sales revenues in the millions of

pesos. Smales (2022) asserts that more people than ever

are using online retailers for their fashion purchases.

The amount of revenue being created by those people has

Luna St. La Paz, Iloilo City 5000

allowed businesses to grow and is now integral to their

success.

As online sales boom, there is an inevitable side

effect that likely results in more merchandise getting

returned, boosting costs and complexity for retailers

(Reagan, 2019).

Statistics show that e-commerce is now an essential

tool for the fashion industry. In 2018, the industry

generated worldwide revenue of $481 billion. In 2019,

statistics rose higher to $545 billion and is projected

to rise further to $713 billion by 2022. The constant

rise in revenue generated is partially down to the rise

in potential consumers. The number of consumers is

expected to increase by a further 1.2 billion by 2020,

with most of those new buyers being aged between 16-35

years of age. Fashion e-commerce is helped by growth in

several sections of clothing. While growth is slowing in

many of them, the projections are still positive (Smales,

2022).

Olson (2019) discusses how sales optimization

technology helps businesses improve sales performance and

increase close rates. Sales optimization tools collect

and analyze customer, inventory, and sales data. This

data, also known as customer or sales intelligence,

offers salespeople insights about prospects and customer

buying behavior that would otherwise be almost impossible

to obtain.

The majority of shops, particularly those offering

local clothing, are having trouble selling some of their

items. This is due to the fact that the majority of

customers are unaware of the existence of their clothing

brand. Furthermore, they are still in the early stages of

development due to their inability to adapt to the

changing business climate through the use of technology

across multiple platforms.

Local clothing shops struggle to raise the necessary

funds and for the most part, invest their personal

savings to address societal issues. The lack of the

ability to scale-up the enterprise to the next level

greatly affects its sustainability. Another major

challenge that most local clothing enterprises face is

West Visayas State University
COLLEGE OF INFORMATION AND COMMUNICATIONS TECHNOLOGY
Luna St. La Paz, Iloilo City 5000

the lack of a proper business strategy, which leads to

non-competitive products.

The study developed an e-commerce platform for local

independent clothing enterprises, where they can sell

their products online and where customers will be able to

find local products and local shops. Also, the

application includes marketing features such as sales

visualizations and sales forecasting to help local

independent enterprises prepare the supplies for the

particular month and brand promotion to maximize their

investment and make it more sustainable. Additionally,

the system helps local clothing sellers to predict their

future sales for them to understand their business

performance. The system is to recommend products based on

the purchases and products in cart. This is to help local

clothing shops sellers to promote their products to those

users who were most likely to buy their products online.

The systems model emphasizes the approach of the

system in analyzing by assuming raw data are processed

and transformed by the system functions to generate

outcomes. The inputs of the system include the data of

sellers, customers, products and shops. If the following

products are listed as active, this will move to the next

phase which is the processing phase where products will

display to the buyer page and recommend shops and

products. If the buyer purchased products, added products

to cart, and gave product reviews, it will generate a

sales dashboard page and make predictions based on the

product completed orders. The output of the system is the

Future researchers. This study could serve as a

basis for assisting the developers of an e-commerce

platform to predict the performance of the business.

Definition of Terms

For better understanding, the following terms were

defined conceptually and operationally:

Arima model. It is a statistical analysis model

that uses time series data to better understand the data

set or predict future trends (investopedia.com, 2022).

In this study, the Arima model was used to predict

the future trend of sales for an independent clothing

brand based on their past transactions.

Clothing enterprises. It is a fashion industry that

consists of enterprises from the textile, clothing and

accessories, and tanning sectors (igi-global.com,2022).

In this study, clothing enterprises refer to local

independent clothing stores registered in the system.

Cosine Similarity. It is a measurement that

quantifies the similarity between two or more vectors.

The cosine similarity is the cosine of the angle between

West Visayas State University
COLLEGE OF INFORMATION AND COMMUNICATIONS TECHNOLOGY
Luna St. La Paz, Iloilo City 5000

vectors. The vectors are typically non-zero and are

within an inner product space (towardsdatascience.com,

2020).

In this study, Cosine similarity was used to solve

similarities between users. It will be determined by the

items in the user's cart as well as the items purchased.

Ecommerce. It is the buying and selling of goods and

services over the internet (investopedia.com,2021).

In this study, E-commerce is referred to as the

implemented platform to perform transactions between

buyers and sellers.

Sales. It is a process that results in a transaction

between two or more parties in which the buyer receives

the offering and the seller gets something of value in

return, which is usually money (feedough.com, 2021).

In this study, sales is the amount of money

generated from the customer using the implemented

platform.

Optimization. It means finding the optimal value or

number, or in other words, the best possible option. With

work optimization, the utilization of the resources in

West Visayas State University
COLLEGE OF INFORMATION AND COMMUNICATIONS TECHNOLOGY

10

use can be planned to be as effective and cost-efficient

as possible (huskyintelligence.com,2018).

In this study, optimization is the strategy of

e-commerce to maximize sales.

Python. A popular general-purpose programming

language. It is used in machine learning, web

development, desktop applications, and many other fields

(programiz.com, 2022).

In this study, Python will be used as the backend in

creating an e-commerce platform.

Flask Framework. It is a lightweight framework that

can be practiced to implement web applications and

backend API applications as well

(levelup.gitconnected.com, 2020).

In this study, Flask framework will be used as the

backend in creating an e-commerce platform.

MySQL. It stands for My Structured Query Language,

is a relational database management system (RDBMS)

developed by Oracle that is based on SQL or structured

query language (talend.com, 2022).

11

In this study, MySQL will be used to store and

retrieve data from databases of local independent

clothing enterprises.

ReactJS. It is a free and open-source front-end

JavaScript library for building user interfaces based on

UI components (reactjs.org, 2022).

In this study, ReactJS will be used as the frontend

in creating an e-commerce platform.

Collaborative Filtering. It is the predictive

process behind recommendation engines. It uses algorithms

to filter data from user reviews to make personalized

recommendations for users with similar preferences

(Techtarget, 2017).

In this study, collaborative filtering will help the

system recommend the shop and products.

Sales Forecasting. It is an estimate of sales by a

firm during a stated future period. It provides

projections for budgeting and planning purposes

(Googlesir, 2022).

In this study, Sales forecasting using a time series

method will be used to determine the future sales of the

product.

Local Clothing Shop. It refers to designing and

producing your own clothing, controlling and directing

the process from start to finish (articles.bplans.com,

2022).

In this study, local clothing shops are shops that

are registered in the system.

Web-based System. It is an application that is

accessed via HTTP. The term web-based is usually used to

describe applications that run in a web browser. It can,

though, also be used to describe applications that have a

very small component of the solution loaded on the client

PC. The host server for a web-based system could be a

local server, or it could be accessed via the internet

(aezion.com, 2020).

In this study, a web-based system is used as a

platform where users can input and access the information

needed and also recommend some of the shops based on

their sales performance.

13

Delimitation of the Study

This study will be limited in developing an

e-commerce platform that allows local clothing businesses

to manage their website, marketing, sales, and

operations. This is limited to implementing a web-based

application only and will not include a mobile

application. This is also limited only to registered

local shops in the system and will focus on finding those

local stores within our database. The system will consist

of: (1), a web-based system that provides an easy and

convenient way to register and find local clothing shops;

(2), a feature which focuses on sales optimization

through sales visualization and sales forecasting using

the Time Series Analysis Model; and (3), a functionality

that recommends the shop and products using the

Collaborative Filtering Algorithm.

The main users of the proposed systems will be the

sellers of local clothing shops and the buyers. The

independent clothing enterprises will register their

shops and add their products online. They will provide

the product category, product name, description, price,

and stock. The sellers can update their product every

time, including stock management. The data will be

displayed in the seller's dashboard, where they can also

find a large number of orders and the bestselling

products. Furthermore, the local seller can track their

sales over time. The customer can order, view, and search

for local clothing shops and products from the clothing

shops registered by the systems.

CHAPTER 2 REVIEW OF RELATED STUDIES

Review of Existing and Related Studies

Collaborative Filtering Algorithm.

Dr. Vasamsetty (2016), conducted a study called

“Web Recommendation System for E-Commerce Applications”,

developed a personalized Recommendation system. This

study resolved challenges like, Tree structured data,

tree structured user preferences, uncertainty in user

preferences, and personalization problem in

Recommendation system and proposed a fuzzy tree

structured user preference tree based recommendation

system.

The researcher used a collaborative filtering

recommendation algorithm for the buyer’s preferences

recommendation.

This study developed a recommendation system for

e-commerce and used collaborative filtering which is a

recommendation technique for our web based online shop.

This study did not cover sales optimization, buyer

and seller log in features, hence, this study recommended

16

a novel dynamic personalized recommendation algorithm for

sparse data, in which more rating data is utilized in one

prediction by involving more neighboring ratings through

each attribute in user and item profiles.

Shopee

Shopee is an e-commerce platform that offers a

variety of product items such as women's clothing,

men's clothing, electronic goods, household

appliances, and sport’s needs. This study called

“Quality Analysis of Shopee Websites by Using Importance

Performance Analysis Approach”, conducted by Yuliati

(2018) stated that consumers consider Shopee websites

important to be easy to use, have good quality

information, and consumers can interact well on the

website. The researcher used the WebQual method to

analyze the website by measuring the quality of the

website based on research instruments that can be

categorized into their variables, namely: Usability,

Information Quality and Services Interaction. The

results of research conducted by Yulisetiarini (2014)

West Visayas State University
COLLEGE OF INFORMATION AND COMMUNICATIONS TECHNOLOGY
Luna St. La Paz, Iloilo City 5000

17

stated that service quality can affect customer

satisfaction.

Lazada

This study called “The Effect of Lazada Website Quality

To Satisfaction and Consumer Loyalty” used website

quality measurement method WebQual 4.0 which is reflected

by three indicators, namely usability, information, and

service interaction. Usability indicators are based on

the study of the relationship between humans and

computers and the study of the usefulness of the website,

including the ease of navigation, the suitability of the

design and the images conveyed to users.

Both E-commerce platforms used WebQual method to

indicate usability, information quality, and services

interaction, whilst our study used ISO 25010 standard (as

the universal website evaluation method) to evaluate the

functionality, reliability, usability, efficiency,

maintainability, and portability of our system.

Both platforms have a good system quality as found

out by the researchers, they as well have found out that

website quality affects customer satisfaction and

West Visayas State University
COLLEGE OF INFORMATION AND COMMUNICATIONS TECHNOLOGY

18

loyalty, as well as it can boost the sales of the

business.

Shopee and lazada have the same feature which is a

Help Center section that lets people easily find the

information they need about transacting with the site.

They also have their own built-in chat service that

allows people to directly message sellers for inquiries.

Lazada has its own feature which is a “question and

response” section to make the website easier to use on

the desktop. Lazada is also much easier to navigate using

mobile devices, its page has a feature where you don’t

have to scroll down the page to find the rating and

recommendations. This also makes it easier for the users

to find what product/s they want to buy, whilst shopee is

a bit messy because of its interface color which can make

the users cannot easily read the texts. An improvement of

the accuracy of its product search results of Lazada, and

the improvement on the speed of the Shopee Home screen,

search results, and images in product pages that take

quite a while to load is recommended.

ANOVA Cosine Similarity

The study called “Image Recommendation Based on

ANOVA Cosine Similarity” (Sejal, D., 2016), has proposed

an algorithm to recommend images based on ANOVA Cosine

Similarity where text and visual features are integrated

to fill the semantic gap. Visual synonyms of each term

are computed using ANOVA p-value by considering image

visual features on text-based search. In this study, the

proposed ANOVA Cosine Similarity framework recommends

images in Vertical Image Search. Various category

products with its description are crawled from myntra.com

website. Visual features are computed, normalized and

stored in the database for all the images off-line.

Weight of each term present in description is computed

using ANOVA p-value by combining text-based search and

visual features of the images. Visual synonyms are

computed using term similarity. Expanded queries are

generated for user input query and text based search is

performed. Cosine similarity is computed between two

images and images are recommended based on

similarity score. Experiments are conducted on crawled

image data from myntra.com website and results are

compared with the iLike method. Relevance score is used

to evaluate quality of ranked images, which is evaluated

manually with the help of users.

Time Series Forecasting using ARIMA Model

According to Ramos, P., et., at., (2015),

Forecasting future sales is one of the most important

issues that is beyond all strategic and planning

decisions in effective operations of retail businesses.

For profitable retail businesses, accurate demand

forecasting is crucial in organizing and planning

production, purchasing, transportation and labor force.

Retail sales series belong to a special type of time

series that typically contain trend and seasonal

patterns, presenting challenges in developing effective

forecasting models. This work compares the forecasting

performance of state space models and ARIMA models.

The researchers conducted a study called “Performance of

state space and ARIMA models for consumer retail sales

forecasting” concluded that an accurate retail sales

forecasting can have a great impact on effective

management of retail operations. Retail sales time series

West Visayas State University
COLLEGE OF INFORMATION AND COMMUNICATIONS TECHNOLOGY

21

often exhibit strong trend and seasonal variations

presenting challenges in developing effective forecasting

models. How to effectively model these series and how to

improve the quality of forecasts are still outstanding

questions. Despite the investigator's efforts, the

several existing studies have not led to a consensus

about the relative forecasting performances.

CHAPTER 3 RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODOLOGY

Description of the Proposed Study

Shops that offer local clothing are facing a dilemma

in selling and depleting their products. Most of them are

still in the early stages of development due to their

inability to scale-up or develop strong business

strategies and take-on-the-fastest-track technology,

which greatly affects their sustainability. With the

rapid growth of online shopping, it has helped in

optimizing the sales pipeline by using the Time Series

Analysis model to determine what particular month the

sales will increase so as to be prepared and by measuring

the similarity between the items that different users

rate or interact with using the Collaborative Filtering

Algorithm.

In this study, the researchers developed a web-based

e-commerce application that helps local independent

clothing enterprises sell their products online and

understand business performance through sales

visualization. The system will forecast future sales

23

based on historical data using Time Series Analysis for

optimization. The system provides an easy and convenient

way to register and find local clothing shops within the

database.

This study also developed a recommendation system

that will be useful for delivering the right product to

customers based on historical behavior using the

Collaborative Filtering Algorithm.

The research design that was used in this study is

Research and Development. Research and development (R&D)

include activities that companies undertake to innovate

and introduce new products and services. It is often the

first stage in the development process. The goal is

typically to take new products and services to market and

add to the company's bottom line (Kenton, 2021).

Data Gathering Instruments

The researchers conducted a survey to evaluate the

functionality, reliability, usability, efficiency,

maintainability, and portability of the system using ISO

2510 standard. The data was gathered from 20 respondents:

West Visayas State University
COLLEGE OF INFORMATION AND COMMUNICATIONS TECHNOLOGY

24

10 sellers and 10 buyers. The survey has a total of 27

items; the survey has 6 parts: (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6).

“1”, contains 5 items (a, b, c, d, e) covering the

scale of functionality of the system.

“2”, contains 4 items (a, b, c, d) covering the

scale of reliability of the system.

“3”, contains 5 items (a, b, c, d, e) covering the

scale of usability of the system.

“4”, contains 3 items (a, b, c) covering the scale

of efficiency of the system.

“5”, contains 5 items (a, b, c, d, e) covering the

scale of maintainability of the system.

“6”, contains 5 items (a, b, c, d, e) covering the scale

of portability of the system.

The instrument was structured on a 5 - point likert

scale, ranging from “strongly satisfied” (1), through

“moderately satisfied” (2), “average” (3), to “moderately

unsatisfied” (4), and “strongly unsatisfied” (5).

Data Collection Procedure

Prior to actual administration of the survey to the

respondents of the study, a request for permission to

conduct the survey was secured. After granting

West Visayas State University
COLLEGE OF INFORMATION AND COMMUNICATIONS TECHNOLOGY

25

permission, the researchers sent a letter explaining the

purpose of the study. The researchers then demonstrated

the system to the respondents and administered the

survey. After which, these were retrieved and

statistically treated using the needed statistical tools.

Methods of Proposed Enhancement

This study aims to develop a web-based application

that will help local independent clothing enterprises

optimize their sales. Selling products online has helped

establish relationships with customers and build brand

awareness, especially in the fashion industry. This

system will help local independent clothing enterprises

as it will be implemented for the public.

For the features of the recommendation systems, the

user aspect of the system is developed as a website so

that no particular computer specification is needed to

run the system and only requires the user to have access

to the internet.

Object-Oriented Design(UML)

The proposed e-commerce web application system will

be composed of two actors, which are the customer and

the local shop sellers shown in Figure 6. The local

sellers can register their shops and sell the product

online, which includes managing reports, uploading

clothes, confirming orders, delivering them, accepting

payments, and making sales. The proposed system will

further require the seller to enter the sales amount and

quantity sold by the product to help them visualize

their sales and forecast the future sales of the product.

The customer will be able to search and view

products online. The system will generate different data

from the database, and the system will rank the best

selling products based on product purchases. With the use

of collaborative filtering algorithms the systems will

recommend products with the users which are likely to buy

based on the users preference.

software development life cycle of the project (Hamilton,

2022).

The researchers identified the target industry of

the systems which are local independent clothing

enterprises. The researchers understand the suitable and

potential systems that will be needed in the

organization.

In the designing phase, which is also referred to as

the transformation phase, the idea is actually

transformed into a real working system. The researchers

collected the data from different local clothing shops.

The researchers design sample prototypes from the data

for better presentation in the development process.

In the development phase, it is how the system

implementation takes place. The researchers used Python

Flask Framework and mySQL database for backend and

react js for frontend in developing an e-commerce web

application run by the web server XAMPP. The researchers

write first table scripts in SQL and run them to create

database tables with CRUD functionality. The researchers

also used VS Code to create HTML files, customize layouts

for user interfaces, insert images, add functional

buttons, and build connections with databases and the

source code.

In the testing phase, the researchers were able to

test and run the registration and login forms and were

able to store users’ data in the database.

In the deployment phase, this includes the work

necessary to deploy the final solution into the target

production environments. The proposed system is able to

include sales forecasting using Time Series Analysis to

forecast sales based on historical data using the Arima

model and Collaborative Filtering using the formula of

Cosine distance to solve the similarity between users.

The system will then recommend a product based on the

highest purchased order and the highest number of

products in the cart.

Chapter 4. Result and Discussion

Implementation

The system helps optimize the sales of local clothing

shops by registering their shops online and recommending

the products by advertisement to those who are most

likely to buy them based on purchases by product order

and product in carts. The products of local shops are

displayed in the system. The system has sales

visualization for sellers to identify the product that

has the highest sales and to forecast the future sales of

the products. The sellers can view the dashboard which

includes the total sales, total orders, total products,

top selling products, latest products and pending

products. The system will tell the seller about the

performance of their business if their sales increase or

decrease to which particular date of month. And for them

to manage their stocks inventory to be able to address

customers' needs and satisfaction. The system displays

available products, recommended products, latest

products, and can browse local shops for easier and

convenient ways for buyers to find their desired product

and local shops. The system helps recommend products to

buyers based on other user generated purchases product

and product in cart. The researchers gathered sample data

from the local clothing stores, such as the product

category and monthly sales of the product to test the

forecasting amount through visualization and to help

optimize the sales of the local clothing shop.

The proposed system will be deployed online through

a domain for the purpose of making it easier for the

public to access the website. The local clothing

enterprises will be logged on the website. This will

allow local clothing shops to register their shops online

and to monitor the sales of their products and forecast

their future sales. The dashboard will display the

visualizations and the forecasted sales.

Summary of Findings

Local shop sellers are lacking the ability to scale

up their businesses and boost their sales. In Iloilo

City, there are a number of local shops that produce

local products with high-quality materials and unique

designs. Somehow, they used facebook, and other social

media marketing to be visible to others and to inform the

public about their shops and products. This strategy is

very helpful for local shop sellers and for buyers. To

easily register online and the availability of products

to be seen by other users is a very essential part of the

business.

The researchers have developed an e-commerce website

called “Shoperty” which comes from the word shop and

property. This web based application is designed for

local shop sellers for clothing enterprises to optimize

their sales by registering their shops online and selling

their local clothing products online.

This study aims to help sellers visualize their

sales overtime. Also, this study aims to help buyers to

77

easily identify the products that are suitable for them

by the system recommendation. The system allows product

reviews and ratings where they can easily identify the

products with good and high quality.

Conclusion

The researchers were able to achieve the objectives

set for the study after the evaluation of certain

criteria. The following conclusion were drawn from the

result of the study:

The system that registers local shops for clothing

enterprises online.

The product recommendations and users review for the

buyers preferences.

Results were acquired after the evaluation of local

shop sellers who register their shops and buyers using

ISO/IEC 25010 to assess the degree to which the system

satisfies the presented requirements of the users and

provides function to the research problem.

Recommendation

From the conclusion drawn and discussed, the

following are the recommendations for the improvement of

the system:

1. Use different matching techniques for products

for easier recommendation.

2. Add the seller’s notification for products that

have fewer sales.
