The documentary Born to be Wild: Effects of Deforestation in the Philippines hosted by Doctor Nielsen Donato showed how cutting trees for mining affects the biodiversity of Surigao del Sur. It was explained how mining greatly affects the economy of the area including livelihood, environment, and people with emphasis on their health. Even though mining activities contribute to the construction industry by providing raw materials in steel and concrete, I do not think that it would justify sacrificing farming, tourism, forestry, and fishery which accounts for about 18% of the Gross Domestic Product of the Philippines just for less than 1% GDP of mining. I would also agree with the need for a new mining law, but considering the time and processes it would take to make it, it would be best if the Local Government Unit itself would strictly monitor the operations of the mining company. Adhering to the existing laws and closely monitoring soil and water conservations practiced by the company will not only save the trees. It will save the whole biodiversity of the site and nearby living organisms and their natural habitats. Destroying the environment will only take a moment but restoring it will take almost a lifetime. There might be some benefits that come along with these changes as mentioned by one of the residents, but it will never be worth of different lives and destruction of limited resources in the long run. Sustainability should be highly regarded as the future significantly depends on it.
