Marshmallow Daze Baby Hat
Marshmallow Daze Baby Hat
13
For you created my inmost being;
you knit me together in my mother’s womb.
14
I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made;
your works are wonderful,
I know that full well.
15
My frame was not hidden from you
when I was made in the secret place,
when I was woven together in the depths of the earth.
16
Your eyes saw my unformed body;
all the days ordained for me were written in your book
before one of them came to be.
Psalm 139:13-16
The Ravelry group Sisters Crocheted and Knitted in Christ made baby hats for preemies as a
charity project. In working on hats for this project, I improvised this design. By beginning the
eyelet rows at a different stitch on each row, the eyelets spiral slightly around the hat. This hat
should fit a baby who weights about four or five pounds.
I made this hat in a soft white, and the finished hat reminded me of marshmallows, hence the
name.
Abbreviations
K—knit
P—purl
Rnd—round
St or sts—stitch or stitches
Yo—yarn over
Two by two ribbing in the round—K2 sts, P2 sts. Repeat around . Next rnd repeat, knitting the
knit sts, and purling the purls.
Instructions
Cast on 52 stitches. Join in the round. A stitch marker may be used to mark the beginning of the
round.
Knit rnds one through seven in 2 by 2 ribbing (or for about one inch.)
Repeat rnds 22 and 23 until about six sts are left on needles. Cut yarn long enough to thread
into yarn needle. Pick up stitches with yarn needle and pull yarn through sts twice. Pull up sts
and thread to back of work and finish off. This produces a slightly pointy top.
If you prefer a flatter top on the hat, end a few rnds sooner leaving more sts on the needles
before using the yarn needle to finish off. Another option is to reduce the number of stitches to
four and make an i-cord of about four inches long. Finish it off and thread the end of the yarn
down through the center of the i-cord with a yarn needle. Tie the i-cord into a knot.
