A220
A220
Contexte :
large quad jets were the very first casualty of the COVID pandemic
a220 has a special place in the airbus family - it was adopted (acquisition of the
bombardier c-series program)
boeing thought it was a threat --> trade dispute
bombardier lands a major deal with delta airlines for 75 cs100 in 2016
(20 mio $ sell price - 30-35 mio $ prix de abrication - 60-72 mio $ prix de vente
normal)
boeing filed a complaint with the US international trade commision -- dumping cost
2017 : subsidised sales at the detriment of the 737 program (737 max)
cseries program received much scrutiny from Boeing, leading to the filing for an
anti-competitive injunction over the subsidies to the planemaker by the Quebec
government
Bombardier sells 50.01% to Airbus on october 16th 2017, the injunction had been
overturned
Bombardier partnered with airbus because Airbus has a final assembly line in mobile
Alabama --> american planes --> aren't subject to US import tariffs
a220 program continues to lose money due to high supply and production costs
airbus will fix by finding efficiencies in the product ramp-up
cargo capacity :
28 cubic meters vs 32.3 cubic meters
Boeing got close to getting the c series into their own aircraft lineup and in fact
in some ways it woulld have been easier for Boeing to integrate the a220 program in
their lineup
Avantages :
Fuel efficient :
120 miles per gallon - 737max-8 103.2 mpg - a321neo 107.4 mpg
high efficiency - usage of multiple departures rather than one larger aircraft
more regular services on smaller planes --> business aviation
Désavantages:
october 2019 : swiss grounded all a220 - engine shutdowns
large quad jets were the very first casualty of the COVID pandemic
problems :
engine shutdowns - engine failures during flight maybe due to engine software -->
in 2020 update software FAA
lifetime limited parts in the engines, need to be removed from the airplane to
change the part (90 days --> 8 months)
back to normal supply chain back in 2024
problem from cockpit design - accidently engage autopilot when wanting to engage
the autothrottle late during takeoff
38 ocurrence - 2 almost fatal
e195-e2
e2 programm in june 2013 at the paris air show - uptdate to the ejet and eseries
october 2019 first entry of e2
boeing tried to make a deal with the embraer to counter bombardier - airbus
2-3 vs 2-2
bombardier approached boeing before the delta order for a possible collaboration --
> Boeing declined
after the complaint : high level discussions between Bombardier Boeing and the
Canadian government about a potential partnership --> boeing would get an ownership
stake in the C-series
Boeing broke of the negociations and continued with the trade complaint
trade complaints were overturned + drove Bombardier and C-series towards Airbus
comptabilité -
