EEE202: Utilization of Electrical Energy

End-semester Examination (MS 2022-23)

Date: 30/11/2022 Maximum Marks: 100 Time allowed: 03 hours
Instructions:
This question paper consists of 4 questions of 25 marks each. Each question is divided
into 4 parts having 4,7, 7, and 7 marks respectively.
Allquestions are compulsory.
In case of missing/erroneous data, assume any justifiable value and mention the same
in your answer sheet.

Q.1 A) If apublic transportation system is to be designed for use byresidents within the campus (4]
of your institute, what type of drive shall be preferred and why?
B) Which among the DC series and DC shunt motors is preferred for traction applications? [7]
Discuss its advantages over the other.
C) Describe the rheostatic starting of a DC series motor with the help of aneat circuit [71
diagram. If the voltage drop in the internal resistance of the DC series motor is neglected,
derive the theoretical starting eficiency of this method.
D) The dead mass of a train is 250 tonnes. Assuming 10% rotational inertia and train 1
resistance of 20 Newton/tonne, the train can achieve a maximum acceleration of 3
kmphps on a level track for a given coefficient of adhesion (H). What would be the
maximum acceleration (in kmphps) the train can reach if (i) the coefficient of adhesion
reduces by 50%, and (ii) the coefficient of adhesion remains the same (u.) but the track

has auniform upgradient of 1%, while other conditions remain the same?
Q.2 A) With the help of neat figure, show the variation of speed-torque characteristics of a [4]
three-phase induction motor with stator voltage control. Draw a schematic of a
three-phase half-wave AC voltage regulator that can be used for stator voltage control of
a three-phase induction motor.
B) For a certain speed, a separately excited DC motor having constant field current develops [71
a back emf of 50 V when fed from a single-phase half-wave converter drive at a firing
angle of 60 degrees. What would be the required firing angle to maintain the same speed
if a single-phase semi-converter drive is used in place of the half-wave converter drive
while the supply voltage remains the same? Assume continuous current in both cases
and neglect series resistance drop within the motor. Also, find the RMS value of the
supply voltage. If the firing angle remains constant (60 degrees), find the percentage
change in speed when the drive is changed from half-wave to semi-converter.
Asingle-phase converter drive is required to have both positive and negative voltages [71
and currents. Draw an appropriate circuit diagram of a drive meeting this requirement and
deduce the necessary operating conditions. When the armature of a separately excited
DC motor having an armature resistance of 0.2 2 is fed from a 230 V, 50 Hz single-phase
AC source using this drive, the motor delivers a torque of 150 N-m while drawing an
armature current of 50 A if the DC voltage across the armature is 100 V. Find the
necessary operating conditions (firing angle) for the drive in this case and the motor
speed in RPM.
D) Showthe circuit diagram of a single-phase half-wave converter feeding a load having a [7]
series resistance and inductance. If the system operates in the discontinuous mode for a
given firing angle, plot the typical variation of the load current and the load voltage when
fed from asingle-phase AC source on a common wt-axis and hence, explain the role of a
free-wheeling diode in rectifier circuits by showing the necessary plots.
Q.3 A) With the help of necessary figures, briefly illustrate the differences between the direct and (4]
indirect resistance heating methods.
B)) Find the efficiency of a three-phase arc furnace that melts 5tonnes of steel in 1.5 hours
while drawing the maximum power. The resistances and reactances of leads and
electrodes are negligible. The resistance and reactance of the transformer referred to
secondary are 0.01 and 0.015 2 respectively.
Specific heat of steel =444 J/kg'c, latent heat of steel =37.25 kJ/kg, melting point of
steel = 1370 C, initial temperature of steel = 20 C.

C) What do you understand by butt welding? What are the types of butt welding processes? 1
Discuss, in brief, the important differences among these methods and show the typicaly
finished welds using these methods.
D) What do you understand by arc welding? Explain, in brief, at least three welding methods 1
that are employed for shielding the weld from the atmosphere. [Note: Figures are not
required]

intensity in all directions. Another point B is at a distance of 2 m from point A. The
illumination at point B is 60 lumen/m². Find the luminous intensity of the source.

B) Describe (i) Luminous intensity, (ii) Luminous flux, and (ii) Illumination. [7]
Specify the units used to measure () Luminous intensity, (ii) Luminous flux, (iü)
llumination, and (iv) Light energy.
C) Explain, in brief, the working of thermal type starter with the help of a neat circuit diagram. [7]
What is the role of the two capacitors used in the circuit?

D Describe (i) coefficient of utilization, and (i) maintenance factor for a lamp. Using the light [71
fux method, calculate the number of lamps needed and suggest an appropriate
disposition of these lamps if aroom of 20 m length, and 10 m width is to be illuminated
with a minimum illumination of 100 lux. The lamps used for this purpose are rated at 100
watts and have an efficiency of 40 lumens/watt. The coefficient of utilization and
maintenance factor are 0.75 and 0.8respectively.
