Tealight Candle
HOLDERS
BY LYNDA TOMKINS (CROCHET AUSTRALIA)

I hate throwing things out, so I designed this project

which is perfect for small coffee, Vegemite and jam
jars (or any jar with a diameter of 6-7cm). We had ours
hanging around the table at night when on a camping
trip to add a magical touch. The pattern can also be
adapted for larger jars, although the taller the jar, the
harder it is to get the candle in and out.

Whilst this pattern has been written
for using raffia/paper yarn, it can
also be made using cotton yarn,
but will take on a different look.

HOMESPUN Crochet | 29
PHOTO 1 PHOTO 2 PHOTO 3

FINISHING
The finished pot plant cover can be left
as is, with the final row being the straight
edge. Fold the top two rows of the cover
over to create a rim. This is shown with the
Small Pot Plant Cover.

Or you can choose to add a fringed edge

by following the method below. The fringe
is added to every second stitch, shown with
the Large Pot Plant Cover.

1 Insert the hook into the desired stitch

along the top edge of plant cover.
(Photo 1)
2 Cut lengths of yarn approximately 15cm
each. Take 2 strands of yarn, fold in half
and loop them over the hook. (Photo 2)
3 Pull the strands through the stitch with
your hook. Continue pulling the loop
through until it is large enough to take
the tail ends through. (Photo 3)
4 Take the tail ends through the loop and
pull tight. Trim the fringe to the desired
length. (Photo 4)

When finished, fold the top of the cover

This crochet blanket is simple yet effective in its design. An easy

project for those with knowledge of mosaics, and a more challenging
project for those who haven’t dabbled in mosaics before.

Mindful
MAKING

50 | HOMESPUN Crochet
Our 21st century lifestyles often leave
much to be desired. Dominated by instant
messaging, depressing daily broadcasts
and the never-ending demands of work
and family (complicated even more
recently by the pandemic), there are
sometimes few intervals of time when we
can truly relax. On top of that, those rare
moments when we finally have nothing
to do can be just as anxiety-producing as
when we were stressed and over-busy.

A number of recent studies have revealed

that handcrafts, such as crochet, have
extraordinary health and wellbeing benefits
apart from the enjoyment of creating
something. Perhaps this is something our
grandmothers knew deep down, but didn’t
think to tell us. This could be one of the
reasons, as well as the extra home-time
the pandemic has created for some, many
people (including the young) have taken
them up as pastimes.

TO START WITH,
A REGULAR DOSE
OF CROCHET
CAN, IN FACT:
1. Keep your hands supple
and flexible, which can ward
off debilitating conditions
such as arthritis and
Dupuytren’s contracture
of the hand and fingers.
2. Keep your hands busy, which
can reduce anxiety and
give your mind a rest as you
simply concentrate on the
stitches and pattern.
3. Keep your brain sharp, as
crafts such as crochet require
multiple parts of the brain
and hand-eye coordination
to work together.

MINDFULNESS
Mindfulness is a meditative-like state
where you are awake and fully aware in
the present moment. There are various
ways of achieving mindfulness including
walking in nature or writing in a daily journal.
However, crochet offers the addition
of the rhythmical action of the stitches
to keep you in the moment and end up
with a satisfying result. The practise of
mindfulness has become an important part
of treatment for anxiety, depression and
PTSD by many psychologists.

In her 2014 book, Crochet Saved My Life,

Kathryn Vercillo describes how turning to
crochet took her out of an incapacitating
period of depression. In her Introduction,
she describes how: “I couldn’t do almost
anything and yet the one thing I could do
was to move a crochet hook back and forth
through yarn … creating fabric out of thin
air so I could breathe in it.”

Most people are not necessarily coming to

crochet from such a dire place in their lives,
however, many do find that the intrinsic
benefits of raised serotonin levels (the feel-
good hormone) and reduced cortisol levels
(the hormone that can mess with your
immune system) very helpful to get through
their days. Some people also find that a
daily session of crochet can even improve
sleep and be an enjoyable distraction from
chronic pain.

EQUIPMENT
• 5.00mm crochet hook

NOTES
• For this pattern, you will be working
into the ‘back bump’ of the foundation
chain. This will give an attractive edge
to your cowl. Once you have joined
your foundation chain with a slip stitch,
rotate the chain forward slightly to
expose the ‘back bump’. Insert your
hook under this ‘bump’ and complete
the stitch as directed.
• Do not turn at the end of each round.
• The cowl can be altered to your desired
length by creating your foundation chain
in multiples of 5 + 2.

wild imagination and would try to bring
it to reality. I remember I did a painting
program in primary school and that was
the start of my interest in the arts. I also
would do random crafting projects for fun
throughout high school, making knitted
booties and blankets, jewellery, felted toys
and paper art. I honestly believe I was born
with a creative flair.

WHAT WAS THE FIRST

CROCHET ITEM YOU
EVER MADE?
My very first crochet item was a succulent
from a kit, designed by Jana Whitley.
My husband bought it for me in 2019.
The kit had all the essentials to make the
succulents and it was a great introduction
to crochet and amigurumi.

WHAT INFLUENCES YOUR
CREATIVITY THE MOST?
There are a few things that influence my
creativity, although my Chinese culture
has definitely influenced most of my
designs, such as the zodiac animals,
Chinese festivals (such as the Lunar New
Year), the food I grew up eating (like
yum cha), and the stories of Chinese
mythical creatures (such as dragons and
phoenixes). Other things that inspire
my creations include my plants and my
favourite comic book characters from
Marvel and DC.

WHAT ARE YOUR FAVOURITE

MATERIALS TO USE? DO YOU
HAVE A FAVOURITE YARN?
I usually use 100% cotton DK yarn. I
don’t have a favourite, but I usually use
the Flinders Yarn from Spotlight, Hobbii
rainbow yarn and Paintbox Cotton DK yarn.

WHAT ACCOMPLISHMENT
ARE YOU MOST PROUD OF?
I’m not going to lie: the thought of having
one of my patterns featured in a magazine
was a proud moment for me! However, my
proudest accomplishment was definitely
taking that leap of faith one and a half years
ago to start my own small business and sell
my creations and designs. C
