TECHNIQUES ON SEPARATING
MIXTURES

MELC:

 Describe techniques in separating mixtures such as decantation,

evaporation, filtering, sieving and using magnets

The components of a mixture can be separated in several ways. Following are
some of the techniques.

Decantation

Decantation is a method of separating liquids with

different densities, such as water and oil. Oil has less density
than water, so it stays on top of water when they are put
together. The oil may be separated from the water by means of
carefully pouring the oil into another container.

This method may also be used to separate a mixture of a liquid and a solid. The
solid substance, called precipitate, usually sinks to the bottom if the solution is left to
stand. The liquid, called the supernatant, stays on top and can be poured into another
container.

Decantation is done when you wash rice before cooking it. After washing the
rice, water is poured off, leaving the rice grains behind. The same process is done
when you clean sand in an aquarium.

Filtration

Filtration is used to separate a solid from a liquid.

This method uses a filter, such as a filter paper. The liquid
particles are small enough to go through the pores in the
filter paper. The solid particles, however, are too large to
pass through the pores and are trapped by the paper. The
trapped solid particles in the filter paper are called residue.
The liquid that passes through the filter is called the filtrate.

In cooking ginataan, coconut milk is extracted from shredded coconut pulp. To

get pure coconut milk (gata), a piece of fine cloth is used to filter the mixture.

Filtration takes advantage of the physical property of the state of matter. A

screen lets the liquid particles through, but traps the solid particles. Example of this is
filtering coffee.

Sieving

Sieves can separate larger solids from smaller solids or liquids. Sieve
is the act or process of sieving; the particles that are too big to pass
through the holes of the sieve are retained.

Magnetic Separation

Magnetic separation is ideal for separating mixtures of two solids with one part
having magnetic properties. Metals have magnetic properties like iron, nickel and
platinum. These metals are attracted to a magnet.

Let us take a mixture of sand and iron filing for example.

Mixture of sand and iron filing is just an example where magnet can be used as
a technique to separate.

Evaporation
Evaporation is a technique used to separate out homogeneous mixtures where
there are one or more dissolved solids. This method drives off the liquid components
from the solid components. The process typically involves heating the mixture until no
more liquid remains, Prior to using this method, the mixture should only contain one
liquid component, unless it is not important to isolate the liquid components. This is
because all liquid components will evaporate over time. This method is suitable to
separate a soluble solid from a liquid.

In many parts of the world, table salt is obtained from the evaporation of sea
water. The heat for the process comes from the sun.

In this picture, once the sea water in these

evaporation ponds has evaporated, the salt can be
harvested.

assistance of your family members, take a photo using different
techniques on separating mixtures in your daily activities. Write the
technique used and write a brief description on it. Use the rubric as your
guide in doing this activity.

Example: Decantation- Rinsing rice with water

This can be done by rinsing the rice with
water and then thoroughly cleaning it so that
the lighter dust particles and husk can float
on the water while rice settles down. Then,
can be separated by decantation.
