What is DIDLS? An acronym to remember those elements of tone that should be
considered when evaluating prose or poetry.

What is tone? The writer or speaker’s attitude in regard to the subject


ansthe audience.
Ex) The tone can be humorous or suspenseful.

What does DIDLS stand for? D - diction


I - imagery
D - details
L - language
S - syntax
Diction The words the author uses to convey ideas to a reader.
Think: Why are the words chosen?

Imagery The author’s use of language that appeals to the five senses
(sight, sound, touch, taste, smell) in order to help the reader
paint a picture in their minds.
Think: What is the author trying to evoke in the mind’s eye?
Details The facts that are included or omitted by the author.
Think: What do the words indicate about the author’s
tone?What details does the author choose to include? What do
they imply?

Ex) How might an adolescent decide to include or omit


details when reporting a minor car accident to his/her
parents, police officers, or school?
Language The overall use of language.
Think: What is the overall impression of the language the
author uses?

Ex) academic, arcane, artificial, bland, bombastic, casual,


cerebral, colloquial, colorless, concrete, connotative,
cryptic, cultured, detached, emotional, erudite, esoteric,
etc.
Syntax The way words are arranged in a sentence and how structure
affects the reader’s attitude.
Think: How do the sentences affect the mood? What is the
author trying to get the reader to do- slow down, speed up,
or create suspense?
