What is DIDLS? An acronym to remember those elements of tone that should be
considered when evaluating prose or poetry.
Imagery The author’s use of language that appeals to the five senses
(sight, sound, touch, taste, smell) in order to help the reader
paint a picture in their minds.
Think: What is the author trying to evoke in the mind’s eye?
Details The facts that are included or omitted by the author.
Think: What do the words indicate about the author’s
tone?What details does the author choose to include? What do
they imply?
Summary
Using the acronym DIDLS, and keeping Diction, Imagery, Details, Language, and Syntax in
mind, you will be able to figure out the tone essentially of the text you could be reading.
