What is a Sonnet?
★ A poem that has 14 lines
★ They confront big feelings, issues or ideas
○ EX: heartbreak, love, loss, conflicts
★ Include a shift or change in tone or thought
○ This change is called a VOLTA
★ Follow a specific rhyme scheme
○ ABAB CDCD EFEF GG
○ The last two lines (GG) are called a couplet
■ They resolve the issue presented in the Sonnet
Sonnet Examples
★ Shakespeare Sonnet 138
○ Confronts the issue of lying. The speaker says that they know that
their lover is lying, but it is okay because the speaker knows that
they mean no harm and are doing it out of love. The main idea of this
sonnet is that it is okay to lie to those that you love if it is for the
purpose of protecting them or their feelings.
