Lesson Plan

Teacher Name: Joel Ruiz III

Grade Level: 12th

Subject: US History

Possible Lesson Topics: American War of Independence, Mexican American War, American

Civil War, Great Depression, WWI, WWII, Cold War.

Before Reading Plan

Motivate students to achieve goals and/or objectives before getting into lesson unit or reading a

book.

Goals/Objectives:

 Make students use critical thinking for contextualization of historical events, support

arguments, and research competence.

 Demonstrate historical knowledge when expressing learning during in-class activities.

 Complete any in-class activities like essays, pop quizzes, among other possible tasks.

Ask students for the specific material needed for the lesson and/or discussion.

Gathering of Materials:

 Pen/Pencil

 Sheet of Paper

 Book being used to teach the lesson.

Once clarifying the goals/objectives and having all necessary materials, now it is time to know

how much background knowledge students have to understand the context and importance of the

topic. Especially in history, which is a subject that requires all possible background knowledge as

all topics are connected to each other.

Introducing a brief outline of the lesson being covered can put students in context and can keep

them engaged throughout the entire class period.

Before getting into the lesson, it is essential to do the following:

 Provide students with a strong reason to motivate them to read the lesson’s book.

 Looking at the cover page is important to have an idea of what the book is about which

involves the title, illustrations, and author’s name.

 Identification of hard words, sentences, or any other difficulties for the students regarding

the book.

During Reading Plan

 Now that I know what my goals/objectives for the lesson are and with the materials on

hand, it is time to introduce the students to the lesson/reading planned. Ask the students a

simple question to start the lesson and keep them engaged like it could be “How many of

you have heard of the American Civil War?” “Have you heard of WWII before?” among

other introductory questions.

 Using direct instruction using a portion will be very useful for me when teaching and

giving instructions to students, but also for them since it will allow them to use the skills

they are going to learn as well as the knowledge they are going to acquire.
 Even if I try to activate students' background knowledge with an introductory question, I

must also make sure that they always use it and the best thing to do is to play videos and

post images on the topic in question.

 While I am teaching the class, I must make sure to signal to the students that they are

always taking notes since they can use that information for in-class activities as well as to

study for upcoming exams. I will allow students to use whatever method they want to

take notes from making charts with info to taking brief notes.

 To make sure students are still engaged in the class, I will be calling on students to ask

questions about what we are covering as well as if I see students distracted, I can do the

self-interruption technique to regain the attention of the entire class.
