A. Formative Assessments
1. Underline the subordinating conjunctions used in the passage below.
Gom-Bur-Za is the acronym set by Jose Rizal
when he dedicated his second novel, “El
Filibusterismo,” to the martyr priests, Mariano
Gomez, José Burgos, and Jacinto Zamora. The
three Filipino Catholic priests were considered
martyrs because they were executed via garrote
and falsely charged with subversion that arose
from the 1872 Cavite Mutiny.
Mariano Gomes, 73 years old, the
oldest and most venerable of the
three, was the first priest to go. He
was well-known for his anti-Spanish
sentiment and well-loved by
parishioners in Bacoor whom he
served long and well. Eyewitnesses described Gomes as calm and resigned to his
fate. His eyeglasses fell as he walked to the scaffold. His famous last words were:
“Let us go where the leaves never fall or move without the will of God.”

2. Choose and circle the subordinating conjunction that makes the sentence in the
paragraph grammatical and meaningful.
Jacinto Zamora, 37 years old, was next. His involvement in the Cavite Mutiny of
January 1872 was built on a note in his confiscated mail. It was an innocent invitation
to a card game. It was taken literally by the authorities, so it sealed his fate (because,
even though, until) it simply referred to money for an overnight card game. Witnesses
marveled at Zamora’s amazing serenity at the execution site (although, since, so that)
the truth was that the priest had suffered a nervous breakdown. One could say that he
was already dead (before, if, unless) the garrote broke his neck.

3. Fill in the blank with the appropriate subordinating conjunction. To give

accurate responses, read and analyze the context of the passage.
Jose Burgos, 35 years old, had the worst time __________ he heard the crank of the
garrote followed by the sound of breaking necks thrice before his turn. His death was
also the most dramatic. __________ the hood was placed over his head in preparation
for execution, Burgos stood abruptly from the garrote seat and shouted: “What crime
have I committed to deserve such a death? Is there no justice in the world?” Twelve
friars restrained him and advised him to accept a Christian death. Burgos sprung up
again shouting: “But I haven’t committed any crime!” One of the friars holding him
down hissed: “Even Christ was innocent!” That remark calmed Burgos and accepted
his fate. __________ he pardoned his executioner and gave one last blessing, and the
curious crowd was brought to their knees.

4. Tell whether the underlined conjunction connects words, phrases, or clauses.

Write W for words, P for phrases, and C for clauses.

a. ____Neither you nor I have any right or privilege to squander nature.

b. ____ Our planet is an amazing place to live, but it needs our help.
c. ____We damage whole ecosystems when we cut down a whole
forest of trees.
d. ____If the planet warms up a couple of degrees more, the polar ice
caps and sea ice will melt.
e. ____The governments of every country need to come together,
make plans and commit to change.
f. ____The Philippines is prone to earthquakes and volcanic eruptions,
for it lies in the Pacific Ring of Fire.
g. ____Considering the present condition of the environment, many
people are seemingly worried yet indifferent.
h. ____To some researchers, there is no balance between energy
coming in from the sun and energy going out.

5. Construct 5 sentences stating your reaction, reflection, insight, or thoughts and

feelings about the martyred priests or GOMBURZA. Use at least one
coordinating conjunction in the first two sentences (a & b) and at least one
subordinating conjunction in each of the three other sentences (c-e).
a. __________________________________________________________________
__________________________________________________________________
b. __________________________________________________________________
