Nowadays, it is evident that the number of people consuming soft drinks has increased throughout the

years, which is a worrying phenomenon. This essay will demonstrate several reasons and suggest
possible solutions for this trend.

Initially, there are many reasons why people, especially the young prefer sugar-based drinks, one of
which is their attractive flavor. In particular, researchers found a large amount of sugar and caffeine in
those drinks, which give users an instant energy boost but not for long. Subsequently, they will be so
tired that they have to drink more, leading to over reliance. Moreover, the variety of sweet flavors such
as strawberry, orange, blueberry can cause addiction since most children are crazy about sugary
substances. In addition, the prevalence of advertisements including Coca cola or Pepsi images also
contributes to the case. Up to now, billion dollars have been spent on investing in promoting soft drinks.
Having seen those ads from time to time, residents are likely to be influenced and buy more these
products.

After pointing out the reasons of this problem, I will recommend some solutions. Firstly, the government
should introduce appropriate policies. For example, imposing higher tax would be a good idea to limit
the trade of sugary drinks. Furthermore, advertisements of soft drinks should be monitored and
restricted as well. Last but not least, schools and other educational institutes are advised to raise
citizens’ awareness. By teaching them about the harm of sugar - based drinks along with the benefits of
other drinks such as tea, coffee, they might reduce the frequency of drinking unhealthy drinks for fear
that their health might be negatively affected.

To sum up, by looking at the justifications of the increase in consumption of soft drinks, the
governments can have some measures to tackle this problem in order for each individual to live a
healthy life.
