High (Boy) This semester, students learned about poem, its structure, poetic/literary devices and the steps

ps to dissect and analyse


poems. The assessments include poem analysis, video essay and poem writing. The topics are aimed to develop their
analysis and writing skills. For their summative assessment, they were expected to write an analysis of their preferred
poems and create a video essay explaining the poem. Using their understanding of poetic devices, they have to be
able to analyse the author’s motivations and how the poem personally connects with them. They also develop their
communication skills by planning scripts and presenting it in their video essay. At the end of semester, they have to
demonstrate their understanding of poem structure and poetic devices by planning, writing their own poem and finding
a proper background music that best fit the tone and mood of their poems.

During class discussion and practices, he showed very good understanding and appreciation of poetry. This was
reflected in his poem analysis where he chose a poem that he was interested in. By showing an initial interest in the
poem, he could personally relate to it and as a result, he was able to thoroughly analyse the structure, content and
overall theme of the poem. He exercised his communication skills by planning and presenting it in a video essay where
he created an informative video essay that not only explains its structure but also points out main underlying message
of the poem and what drew him towards the poem as well. For the final poem writing assignment, he communicated
certain themes and he elaborated the ideas within that theme by successfully utilising figurative languages and auditory
devices that have been discussed in the class, thus effectively delivering the mood, tone and the overall message of
the poems.

In the next year level, hopefully he will be more comfortable in exploring and analysing other literary genres. A
consistency in maintaining his work will also benefit him in gaining a better academic achievement.
