The key principle in solar energy generation is the photovoltaic (PV) effect: sunlight falling on a
semiconductor material gets converted into electrical energy

Solar Generation varies as per location

Microinverters - Safe, powerful & durable
The homeowners are the most affected by shading of roofs and are also those who can benefit the
most from microinverters. Microinverters are also excellent for difficult roof orientations, starter
systems and small applications.
Generation: String inverter systems are as good as their weakest performing module

Maximum Power Per Channel : When a shadow falls on a solar panel, it affects the efficiency only of
the channel it is connected to. Two solar panels are connected in series to a channel of a microinverter.
With a string inverter, the entire string's performance is affected and production is limited to the power
output of the weakest performing panel.

Government policies and incen�ves for roo�op solar
Government of India has been promoting
rooftop solar for residential consumers
and incentivizing adoption by offering
capital subsidy for any household who
wishes to install an on-grid system. In
order to facilitate smooth and
transparent disbursal of subsidies, the
government launched a national portal
for rooftop solar which can be accessed
at https://solarrooftop.gov.in/.

With the portal, any household who

wishes to install a grid-connected rooftop
solar system can apply for capital
subsidy following the procedure detailed
in the portal. Under this scheme, capital
subsidy is available as per the below
table:

State government policies and net metering regulations

The Electricity (Rights of Consumer) rules by Ministry of Power (MoP) 2020 clearly states that net
metering is an essential step for energy independence & benefits both the consumer & the
environment.

India has predominantly adopted net metering

mechanism to promote adoption of
grid-connected rooftop solar by the
end-consumers. Net metering allows a
grid-connected solar system (usually of capacity
up to 1 MW; but it varies for each state) to export
excess solar generation to the electricity grid and
to import electricity from the grid when solar
power is not producing or insufficient like in the
evenings or night.

If I invest in a Solar Rooftop Setup, in how much time will I make my money back?
In a Solar Rooftop System, the major investment is its installation cost. It has a minimal maintenance
cost and no fuel cost. The payback period is 3-5 years. After the payback period, it will continue to
generate ‘free electricity’ for the rest of its life. This translates to 25+ years of savings, unlike any other
financial investment method. However, this is only possible if high quality components are used, and
timely maintenance is done.

What happens to the power production on a cloudy day?

A Solar PV System doesn’t require direct sunlight to be able to work, though direct sunlight gives the
maximum efficiency. The energy output drops to 60-70% during an overcast day and <50% if it rains all
day.

How does shading affect the performance of a Solar PV System?

Shading on any one solar panel can have a very large effect on performance, as the energy produced
by the rest of the panels may be throttled by the shaded panel in the same series connection. Thus, it
is recommended to install the system in a shade free area. However, Microinverters can reduce the
effect of shading and boost energy generation.

What kind of maintenance is needed to keep the Solar PV System in a healthy condition?
Regular cleaning of the solar panels should be ensured so that the system works at its full efficiency.
Occasional checks should be done to ensure that there is no shading on the panels because of any
obstruction e.g. leaves, bird droppings etc. The rest of the system is passive, and requires periodic
checks; however, any preventive or breakdown maintenance should be done only by a qualified
professional. A strong maintenance plan can boost savings by >15%.

What is Net Metering? How can I be benefited from it?

Net Metering is a policy that allows the unused power produced by the Solar PV System to be fed to the
Grid to which the system is tied to. This allows the system owner to get concessions on his electricity
bills; the units fed to the grid will offset against the units actually consumed by the owner. After this
offset, the billing will only be done for the remaining units. Therefore, if the power tariffs are high, the
savings of solar are higher.

What will happen in a situation when the power in the grid is out?
An on-grid Solar PV System without batteries is designed to shut down if the power in the grid is out.
This is done so that in case of maintenance any personnel doesn’t get electrocuted because of the
power fed to the grid by the Solar PV System.

How is an Energy Storage System better than Diesel Generator as a backup system?
Though the capital cost of an Energy Storage System is higher than a DG System, a DG System
accounts for a high fuel cost and maintenance cost. An Energy Storage System doesn’t require any fuel
and its maintenance is very minimal and easy. It is a clean and environment-friendly backup option
with a lower total cost of ownership over its lifetime.
