Knowledge, Ignorance,
Truth and Jouissance
Coming back to speak at Sainte-Anne I should
have hoped there might be some junior doctors
here. In my rime they were known as asylum
interns. Nowadays they work in psychiatric hos-
pitals, nor to mention rhe rest.
They were the audience I had in mind by
coming back here to Sainte-Anne. I was hoping
that some of them might put themselves our. If
any of them are here - I mean doctors who are
currently interns - would they be kind enough to
raise a hand? Thar's a crushing minority, bur well,
it'll do me fine.
On this basis, and so long as I don't run our of
steam, I'm going to try to say a few words.
As always, these words are exremporary, which
doesn ' t mean I don ' t have a few brief notes here.
I extemporized them this morning, because I
work a great deal. You shouldn ' t think you have
to do as much.
I have insisted on the distance that lies between
work and knowledge. Don't forger char this
evening I'm promising you some knowledge, so
there's no real need to tire yourselves our. You're
going co see why. A few of you already have some
inkling, having been present at what is known as
my Seminar.

On Incomprehension
and Other Themes
What I'm doing with you this evening is clearly
not what I had planned to do this year, which
was to give the next step of my Seminar. Ir's
going to be an entretien, like last time. 1
Everyone knows - many ignore it - my
insistence, to those who solicit my counsel, on
preliminary entretiens in analysis. Of course, it
has an essential function for analysis. There is no
possible way in to analysis without these prelimi-
nary consultations. But something of this comes
close to the relationship between these entretiens
and what I'm going to be saying to you this year,
except that it absolutely cannot be the same given
that, since I'm the one who is speaking, I'm the
one in the position of analysand.
I could have come at this from a good many
other angles, bur at the end of the day it's invari-
ably at the last minute that I know what I've
chosen to say. Today's entretien strikes me as a
favourable opportunity in view of a question that
was put to me yesterday evening by someone from
my School, one of those people who rake their
position to heart. I was asked, word for word, Is
the failure to comprehend Lacan a symptom?
To my mind, this question has the advantage
of leading me straight to the crux of the matter. Ir

I've Been Talking
to Brick Walls
Ie's not known whether the serial is the principle
behind what is serious. Nevertheless, I find myself
faced with chis question. The question has arisen
due to the fact that clearly I cannot continue
here what elsewhere is defined as my teaching,
as what is called my Seminar, if only because
not everyone has been informed that I've been
holding a short conversation here once a month.
And since there are people who sometimes take
the rrouble from quite far afield to keep up with
what I say elsewhere, under the Seminar ride, it
wouldn't be right to continue here.
It's a matter of knowing what I'm doing here.
It's not altogether what I was expecting. I've
been led to change direction by this crowd, a
crowd rhat has ensured chat chose whom I actu-
ally invited to something char was initially called
7he Psychoanalysts Knowledge are nor necessarily
absent, but are a little swamped by it. For those
who are here, I don't know whether in alluding
to my Seminar I'm speaking about something
they are familiar with.
They should also rake account of the fact chat,
since last time, I have got chis Seminar under
way. I've got it under way, and if one is a little
attentive and rigorous, one cannot say chat this
