CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

This chapter includes the Background of the Study, Significance of the Study, Scope & Limitations,

Statement of the Problem, Objectives, and the Hypothesis.

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

In today’s world, young people face various challenges as they grow up, and high school is a crucial

time for them. Adolescents deal with a range of issues such as peer pressure, academic stress, and

personal identity development. According to the ASCA, “School counselors recognize and respond to the

need for mental health services that promote social/emotional wellness and development for all students.

[They] advocate for the mental health needs of all students by offering instruction that enhances

awareness of mental health, appraisal and advice addressing academic, career and social/emotional

development; short-term counseling interventions, and referrals to community resources for long-term

support.”

These challenges can significantly impact their mental health and overall well-being. There has been an

increased focus on the importance of counseling services in secondary and higher education institutions,

particularly in the Philippines. The study aims to explore the impact of counseling services on student

mental health and well-being in STI College Surigao’s SHS as well as identify any potential barriers or

challenges to effective implementation of mental health services in school.

This study will also try to identify the specific needs and preferences of students in terms of counseling

services, and suggest recommendations for improving the quality of efficacy of counseling services at the

institution. The study will be conducted through the combination of qualitative and quantitative methods,

such as surveys, interviews, and focus groups, to gather data from students, school administrators, and

counseling staff.

The study will also involve a literature review of existing research on the topic, to provide a deeper

understanding of the current state of mental health and counseling services. Concern has been increasing

about student mental health. Studies suggest a high prevalence of reported mental health problems among

students and that these problems have grown in both number is severity. Writing in 2022 for the ASCA

magazine, Dr. Wendy Rock cited the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in

saying, “Today’s students are experiencing an increase in mental health concern. Over the past two

decades, there has been a steady increase in youth anxiety, depression, substance use and suicide.”

Moreover, studies indicate an increase in students seeking help for mental health problems. Student

Mental health and well-being are critically important for academic success and overall development, but

it can be challenged by multitude of factors, including academic stress and pressure, family situations,

interpersonal conflicts, socioeconomic status, mental illness, bullying, and other issues. So that student

counseling cam provide the necessary support to help address these challenges and improve student

mental health and well-being. It can offer a safe space for the students to express their concerns and

receive support, guidance, and resources. By offering a holistic approach that recognizes the multi-faceted

nature of mental health and well-being, counseling services can play a crucial role in promoting student

success and fostering.

CHAPTER II

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURES

Over the last 2 decades, people have been worried about more students going to counseling with
serious problems. This is putting extra pressure on mental health services at universities. Surveys have
been done, but they have some problems, like not being consistent and only including small groups of
students who choose to take part. It’s tough to compare these surveys and make decisions based on them.
However, some projects, like the NHS’s program to improve access to therapy, have shown that
collecting data can help make services better. In the US, a group has been collecting data from college
counseling services, which has been helpful. But there are challenges, like figuring out which questions to
ask and how to collect the data. Still, studies have shown that counseling helps students feel better, even
though some students in the UK might wait until they’re really struggling before seeking help. Making a
national database could help compare services and make them better for all students. (Broglia E, 2020)

The foundation of counseling involves aiding individuals with various issues, including job,
educational, and mental health challenges, to strive for improvement. However, counseling encounters
limitations, particularly in educational settings, such as addressing the perception of undesirable
behaviors in young students and the complexity of guiding high school adolescents. These challenges can
hinder the effectiveness of counseling programs. To mitigate these limitations, solution-focused brief
counseling (SFBC) approaches emphasize focusing on students' strengths and involving stakeholders like
administrators and parents in the transformation process. SFBC aims to address these shortcomings and
guide students toward desired outcomes effectively.

The study confirms previous findings that mental health problems are common among students and
that they have a low level of seeking help for their issues. The study highlights an association between
academic self-efficacy and psychological distress, which has been described in previous studies. The
researchers are uncertain about the causal pathways and underpinning mechanisms that contribute to this
relationship. The study's results reinforce the need for better understanding of the causes and solutions to
student mental health issues. (Sund E, 2019)

According to Noella Dufie Addy, over half of students (58.5%) experienced peer, emotional, conduct,
and hyperactivity problems, while 5.4% exhibited prosocial behaviors. Mental Health Disorders (MHDs)
were associated with females, bullying, domestic violence, substance abuse, academic pressure, and poor

school performance. The main themes attributed to MHDs were financial challenges, spiritual influences,
intimate relationships, bullying, and domestic violence. Coping strategies included isolation, substance
use, and spiritual help. (Agbozo F, 2021)

Aminu Jibril Arfasa nvestigated the guidance and counseling practices and challenges in southwest
Ethiopia secondary schools to improve student services. It used both quantitative and qualitative methods
with 392 students, 108 teachers, 8 counselors, 8 principals, and 8 educational bureau officers. Data were
collected via questionnaires and interviews, analyzing frequency of student visits and perception scores.
Results revealed limited student visits, positive perceptions despite limited availability, and challenges
like lack of trained counselors and facilities. The study concludes that addressing these challenges is vital
for student learning and wellbeing in secondary schools. (Weldmeskel F, 2020)

The American School Counselor Association (ASCA) has shifted the title of school counselors from
'guidance counselors to school counselors (Mary W, 2024). School counselors are responsible for mental
health services that promote social/emotional wellness and development for all students. They offer
instruction, appraisal, advice, short-term counseling interventions, and referrals to community resources
for long-term support. The need for mental health support in education settings continues to grow, with an
increase in youth anxiety, depression, substance use, and suicide over the past two decades. School
counselors play a crucial role in supporting student mental health and well-being.

Researchers conducted a descriptive survey study with 392 students, 108 teachers, 8 counselors, 8
principals, and 8 educational bureau officers from random samples of secondary schools. Data were
collected through questionnaires and oral interviews. The results showed that many secondary school
students do not use the guidance and counseling services, and the mean perception scores for students and
teachers were positive. However, the provision of such services was often limited or unavailable, and
challenges such as the lack of professionally trained counselors and required facilities were identified.
The researchers concluded that the state of the guidance and counseling services and the associated
challenges significantly impact secondary school student learning and personal well-being, highlighting
the importance of addressing these issues.

This study aimed to characterize university students' academic and psychological functioning,
comparing cognitive behavior and psychodynamic psychotherapies' feasibility and clinical utility in
improving mental health. Results showed improvements in well-being and distress regardless of therapy
type, emphasizing the importance of university counseling services in promoting students' mental health
and positive transition to adulthood. (Vescovelli F, 2017)

Otter Bjerkeset highlights the importance of caring interactions during difficult life periods,
emphasizing personal approach, practitioner readiness, attention to the young person's agency, and

balancing active involvement and autonomy. This theory aims to inform counseling practices in school
health services, focusing on providing supportive and empathetic care to young individuals facing
challenges. (Bjerkeset O, 2019)

The study investigates the effectiveness of a 5-week school-based mental health counseling
intervention (SBMHCI) for students with active Individual Education Programs (IEP) at three Title I
elementary schools in the Southeastern United States. Using a single-group, pre-test-post-test design,
researchers examined changes in participants' behavioral and emotional problem scores and discipline
referrals. Results show significant improvements in internalizing and externalizing problem scores
according to parents and teachers, as well as a decrease in office discipline referrals over time. However,
since there was no control group, comparisons with non-participants' outcomes were not possible.
(Kelchner V, 2019)

University students in ASEAN face a high burden of mental health problems, with depression, anxiety,
and addictive behaviors being the most prominent issues. Despite the high prevalence of these problems,
the willingness to seek help from professionals is low, and many settings lack counseling services or
student-friendly mental health care. Addressing this gap in care is essential to improve students' mental
health and well-being. In addition to scaling up counseling facilities, addressing mental health stigma is
necessary to encourage help-seeking for mental health problems. Creating an enabling and supportive
environment for students and staff in universities could be an essential preventive measure.
