Planking

Planking is a modern fad that involves lying face down in a straight and stiff position with both
arms and hands held tightly against the body. Planking can involve a person balancing in the plank
position on an object or structure and/or make take place in an unusual or unexpected location.

While the origins of the practice are difficult to trace, it is known that back in 1994 an American
comedian did a stunt called 'dead guy' that involved him situating himself in prone position on a
crowded sidewalk in Canada. In 1997, 'the lying down game' was enacted by two male British students
who decided to express their boredom through a prank that had them lying rigid and face down in
obscure places to amuse themselves and confuse onlookers. Thanks to social media, the craze soon
increased in popularity and the rest of the world became aware of 'planking', a name first coined on
social media in 2008 by a South Australian resident and now universally accepted as a title for this
bizarre occupation.
