SCANPRO MOISTURE SENSOR

INTRODUCTION

The Scanpro single (Figure 1) or dual head1 (Figure 2) microwave sensor is used in combination
with a basis weight sensor, such as the NDC beta or gamma sensor, to measure the moisture
content of a product such as paper or paperboard.

Figure 1 - Scanpro Single Head Figure 2 - Scanpro Dual Head

The Scanpro Dual Head sensor has three different operating modes:

Ÿ Start mode - activated when power is turned on to the system. The LED on the sensor
remains lit in Start mode.

Ÿ Garage mode - activated during the standardization routine to calculate corrections for
deviations in the gap. The LED on the sensor remains lit in Garage mode.

Ÿ Normal mode - normal operating mode for collecting measurements. The LED on the sensor
flashes in Normal mode.

The Scanpro Single Head sensor has only one operating mode and no LED.

1
For the dual head sensor, the measurement gap should be between 7-11 mm, ± 1.5 mm.

MEASUREMENT PROCESSING

Measurement processing consists of five stages:

· Data Collection

· Standardization

· Curve Fit

· Temperature Compensation

· Basis Weight Collection

q Data Collection

The Scanpro sensor provides two analog inputs:

· The first input is a 0 – 10 V signal that is linear with the weight of water. This input
connects to the Scanpro gauge output.

· The second input is a temperature input that is fed in as a 4 – 20 mA signal, where

4 mA is equivalent to 0 °C and 20 mA represents the full scale value (100 °C is the
full scale value for the temperature sensors used by NDC). If a system has a beta
gauge mounted on the same scanner, the beta gauge’s gap temperature is used to
compensate the Scanpro signal.

q Standardization

The Scanpro sensor signal is standardized against a zero reading taken when the
standardization routine runs. Readings are taken during the standardize period when the
shutter is open. During standardization, the average value for the Scanpro signal is computed.
This value is subtracted from the raw input signal during normal measurements.

q Curve Fit

The signal is linearized by applying the following calculation:

Linearized = A0 + A1 x sig + A2 x sig2 + A3 x sig3

where

A0, A1, A2 and A3 are coefficients entered on SCANPRO CALIB SET-UP menu Page 1

Scanpro Moisture Sensor Addendum 11/01/02 3

q Temperature Compensation

If temperature compensation is applied, the temperature at standardization is subtracted from

the current temperature and multiplied by a temperature coefficient factor (entered as
TEMP COEFF gsm/degc on SCANPRO CALIB SET-UP menu Page 2). The result is
added to the gauge value.

q Basis Weight Collection

The output is basis weight compensated, based on mass readings from the basis weight
sensor. A predetermined basis weight setpoint is used if the system does not include a basis
weight sensor. If the basis weight measurement is not in grams per square meter, it is
converted to that unit.

The gauge reading is calculated as:

Gauge Reading = 100 x Temperature-compensated reading / basis weight (gsm)

Ÿ Configure the gauges

Step 2 - Assign Gauge Labels (optional)

Step 3 - Select Gauge Units

Step 4 - Create at least two separate Grid Setups and assign the moisture grid to the
moisture sensor (optional)

Step 5 - Set up the Scanpro sensor

Step 1 - Configure the System

q Set the number of scanners and gauges in the system

Step 5 - Set up the Scanpro sensor

Parameters relating to Scanpro setup are found in the SCANPRO CALIB SET-UP menu, and on
the PROCESS page.

Scanpro Calib Set-Up Menu

Unless otherwise noted, the settings in this menu are assigned at the factory, and should not
be changed at any time.

Move to the SCANPRO CALIB SET-UP menu (SET-UP > SITE MENU > GAGE MENU >
SCANPRO CALIB). There are three pages in this menu. Use the arrow button on the top right
corner to scroll the pages.

If there is more than one Scanpro sensor in the system, there is a separate set of setup pages for
each Scanpro sensor. The screen will show the parameters for the currently selected Scanpro
sensor. The label at the top of each page shows the current Scanpro sensor (see Figure 10). Use
the arrow buttons (-<< and ->>-) on each side of the label to select a different Scanpro sensor.

These are the third order Polynomial Linearization Coefficients.

Scanpro Moisture Sensor Addendum 11/01/02 12

The Scanpro signal is linearized by applying the following equation:

Linearized = A0 + A1 x sig + A2 x sig2 + A3 x sig3

For most cases, A2 and A3 can be set to 0.

q TEMP COMP

Sets whether temperature compensation is applied.

q BASIS WEIGHT

If this toggle is set to GAGE_, readings from the basis weight gauge will be used in
calculations of percent moisture. If SETPT is selected, the BW SETPOINT value on the
PROCESS page will be used in calculations of percent moisture. See Figure 13.

q TEMP COEFF gsm/degc

A multiplying factor for the temperature delta (difference between the current temperature
and the temperature at standardization), expressed in gsm/deg C. In practice, this is the
negated temperature coefficient of the gauge.

q DIV BY BW

Sets whether division by basis weight is used in the Scanpro algorithm. Set this toggle to
OFF if the Scanpro sensor measurement is in weight per unit area of water. Set this toggle to
ON if the Scanpro sensor measurement is a percentage of basis weight.

q SCANPRO TEMP FS (C)

Full scale temperature. Set this value to 100. This applies only to single-sided Scanpro
sensors.

This button is disabled if a Beta gauge is the basis weight gauge.

The SCANPRO DEBUG page (Figure 12) is used primarily by NDC personnel when testing the
gauge at the factory, and during subsequent troubleshooting.

This page includes the intermediate variables used in the calculation of percent moisture. In the
case of a suspected measurement problem, you may be asked to print and fax this page to
NDC Infrared Engineering.

Touch the PRINT button to print a copy of the parameters on this page. The REFRESH button
updates all the data values on this page. Invalid values are reverse printed on orange.

The parameters on this page are:

q S-pro Volts

This is the Scanpro signal in volts.

q Volts - Stdz

Result of S-pro Volts – stdz offset (V).

q Linearized

Result of Volts – Stdz after it is linearized.

q - Tempcomp

Result of Linearized – temp comp (gsm).

Scanpro Moisture Sensor Addendum 11/01/02 15

q stdz offset (V)

Standardization offset collected during standardization.

q temp comp (gsm)

Calculated value based on temperature delta (difference between temp now and
temp at std) and Temp coeff.

q temp now (C)

Current temperature for the temperature sensor in the Scanpro sensor. If the system has a
beta gauge, the temp now value is obtained from the beta gauge gap temperature sensor.

q temp at std (C)

Temperature at standardization.

q basis weight

Mass reading used by the Scanpro sensor in calculations. This reading is obtained from the
basis weight gauge or the BW SETPT value on the PROCESS page, depending on whether
the BASIS WEIGHT selection is a gauge label or SETPT (on SCANPRO CALIB SET-UP
menu Page 1).

q Temp coeff

Result of temp at std (C) x TEMP COEFF gsm/degc (entered on SCANRPO CALIB
SET-UP menu Page 2).

q bw (G/M2)

basis weight in gram/sq. meter.

q std pos

Standardize is done throughout the standardization routine:

TRUE - Gauge is at the standardize position
FALSE - Gauge is not at the standardize position
