THE TEMPERATURE OF EXHAUST GAS
We are sometimes informed that engine revolution cannot increase because
of high exhaust temperature. According to running data of those vessels
exhaust temperature is certainly higher than that of checked at our shop.
The biggest difference between shop trial and in service is surrounding
engine. Auxiliaries engine, boiler etc. are operated in engine room. And
this surrounding tends to cause higher temperature and lack of air compared
with that of our shop. Inquired capacity of mechanical ventilation is
increased in the design process to make up the air. However it is difficult
to make similar condition as in shop.
The result of our simulation, exhaust temperature in engine room is
about 50°C higher than that of in shop. And it almost matches actual
circumstance.
What is the allowable exhaust temperature?
This depends on the endurance of exhaust valve seat. Both of users
and makers have considered ‘the exhaust temperature should be maintained
less than 400°C at cylinder outlet’ as a common sense until now.
However recently —especially vessels that are taken measures against
low-grade-fuel— structure and materials of combustion chamber surrounding,
exhaust stem and seat has been changing, which falls temperature of
the structure,
Reference the chart of next page about thermal distribution of present
engine and old type one. The chart shows that the distribution of present
engine has declined in the same exhaust temperature. In other words, it is
possible to raise exhaust temperature as much as the remainder. Actually
since thermal endurance of materials of exhaust stem and seat have been
improving, it is possible to rise exhaust temperature.Ait °C

Therefore we set our standard exhaust temperature as follows.

Since cylinder outlet exhaust temperature is apparently average one
and it does not mean absolute value of thermal load, you do not need to
worry about it so much. However poor maintenance causes bad combustion
and bad combustion increases thermal change and unbalance.
