M1: All right class, let's get started. I'd like to begin today's class . With
your left hand I want you to pat yourself on the head. With your right hand I want you
to rub your belly with a circular motion. Can you do it?
M2: Hey, this is really difficult! I can't do it!
W: I've got it! It just takes a lot of attention. Check this out!
M-I: Okay, everyone can stop now. I asked you to do this because I wanted you to notice
for your brain and nervous system to coordinate two different actions
. This is called splitting your attention. Attention is the cognitive process
of selectively concentrating on one thing . One example is listening
carefully to what someone is saying other conversations in the room. This
is called the cocktail party effect. Attention can also be split, such as when a person
drives a car and talks on a cell phone. Sometimes our attention shifts to matters
the external environment. This is referred to as mind wandering or
"spontaneous thought."
W: But I was able to pat my head and at the same time. What does that mean
about me?
M1: Well, that means that you splitting your attention. That reminds me of the
most famous definition of attention , William James. He
said, "Everyone knows what attention is. It is the taking possession by the mind in
clear and vivid form, of one out of what seem to be several simultaneously possible
objects or trains of thought. It implies in order to deal effectively
with others."
W: Hmm, that sounds interesting. But how is the action of rubbing my belly and patting
my head focusing my mind?
Ml: Good question. It is linked because your cerebral cortex controls your fine motor
skills, which is what those motions require.

wi: Okay everyone, today we are going to talk about from the sun. It's named
after Mars, the Roman god of war. Until the first flyby of Mars by Mariner 4 in 1965,
it was thought that there were channels on the planet's surface. People
• called these the Martian canals. Observations later showed that these channels do
not exist. Still, of all the planets in our solar system after Earth, Mars is the most
likely and possibly life.
M: What about time on Mars? I heard it takes longer than the Earth.
W1: Very good. That's right. Mars has a similar axial tilt to Earth, so it has similar
seasonal periods. But it's further and takes longer to orbit. So a Martian year
is 687 Earth days long. Interestingly enough, the solar day on Mars is almost the
same as Earth, being approximately 24 hours, 39 minutes, and 35 seconds.
W2: What about its atmosphere? Is it possible for humans on Mars?
W1: Well, Mars has an atmosphere. But since it contains only traces of oxygen, you
wouldn't want to breathe it. The Martian atmosphere is 95% carbon dioxide, 3%
nitrogen and 1.6% argon. During the winter months, the atmosphere gets
into thick slabs of dry ice.
M: But earlier, you said that it's possible for life to exist there. What kind of life could live
in that kind of atmosphere?
W1: That's an interesting question. Some evidence suggests that the planet was
today. But whether living organisms ever existed there
is still an open question. The Viking probe of the mid-1970s carried experiments de-
signed in Martian soil and had some positive results. But these were
later disputed by many scientists.
