SAFE CHEMICAL HANDLING
DO NOT perform this activity unless
it is safe to do so and given appropriate PPE

PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT

RECEIVING to be used to compliment training and as a reminder to


users prior to equipment use.
 Purchase chemical wisely. Choose less hazardous
chemical where possible.

 Inspect chemical upon receiving. Ensure no leakage


or spillage. Reject if leakage detected or packaging
damaged.

 Ensure chemical attached with label. Reject if you


receive chemical without label.

 Ensure safety data sheet (SDS) is provided for every


type of chemical.

STORAGE
 Store chemicals separately from inflammable
material and gas cylinders.

 Chemical containers must be stored with closed lids


when they are not being used

 Equipment for handling and cleaning up spillage


must be in readiness and suitable for the chemicals
that are stored. It is suitable to have equipment
placed outside the chemical store.

 Do not store acids and alkalis together.

 All chemical products must be stored and labelled in


accordance with the instructions on the safety sheet.

 Chemicals must normally be stored in their original


packaging.

 If you need smaller amounts of a chemical, the new


packaging must be suitable for the substance.

 Labelling must be in accordance with the original


packaging.

 It must always be possible to know what substance


the packaging contains and what risks there may be.

DISPOSAL
 Dispose empty chemical container as schedule
waste.

This WI does not necessarily cover all possible hazards


associated with this equipment and should be used in
conjunction with other references. It is designed as a guide
HANDLING
 Always read the safety data sheet (SDS) and the text
on the packaging carefully when you are about to
use a product with which you are not completely
familiar with the risks.

 Read labels and the material safety data sheet


(MSDS) before using any material to make sure you
understand hazards and precautions.

 Use PPE (e.g. gloves, face mask) where necessary.


 First Aid equipment must be available.
 Workplaces must be cleaned regularly. There must
not be chemical spills on the floor.

 Wash hand before and after handling chemicals.


 Food products must not be stored or eaten in
premises where chemicals are handled.

 Do not smoke or eat when handling chemicals.

 Use all materials solely for their intended purpose.


Don’t, use solvents to clean your hands, or gasoline
to wipe down equipment.
