Trimmer 550 Standard Operating Procedure

18. Size Change Over

x Stop the machine and follow the appropriate safety procedures.
ToolBox:
- 6, 8mm Allen Key,
- 13,17,19,24mm Spanner,
- Pusher Pad Pin Spanner.

This SOP will show you how to perform a Height and Diameter Change Over from 211 to 202 dia
cans. In order to perform it correctly, you have to know how to:
- Remove the Infeed StarWheel (Sop # 14),
- Remove a trimming head (Sop # 1),
- Set the pusher pads (Sop # 13),
- Set the depth of cut (Sop # 17).

18.2 Infeed StarWheel

Follow SOP # 14 and remove the Infeed

StarWheel and Infeed Guide.

Removing the Infeed Top Guide will provide

extra access into the Infeed area, should you need
some.
(Fig: 18.2.1)

18.3 Pusher Pad Fig: 18.2.1

Using the Special Pusher Pad Pin Spanner, and

a 6mm Allen Key, unscrew the Pusher pad.
The Allen Key is here to prevent the shoulder
screw from turning: Hold it still and turn the
Special Spanner. The Pusher Pad should come off.
Replace with the appropriate ones.

Take care not to upset the Pusher parallelism and

concentricity settings.

18.4 Vacuum Can Stop Elbow Fig: 18.3.1

Using an 24mm Spanner, remove the

Vacuum can stop elbow (1).
Use a 19mm Spanner to remove the two bolts
securing (2) the Guide Plate.

Remove the Infeed Can Guides: to do that, loosen
Conveyor Top Rails (2) (1)
the Split Clamp locking screws (3) of the Guide
Pillars.

Guides
- Fit the 202 diameter insert pieces into Conveyor
Can guides,
- Fit the new size Infeed Can Guides to the Split
Clamps and slide into position on the Guide Pillars,
- Refit Guide Plate and Canstop vacuum elbow,
- Fit new Diameter Infeed Starwheel and Infeed Guide,
- Fit new diameter Conveyor Infeed Top Rails
and check for smooth transfer of cans between
the Infeed Can Guides, Starwheel, and Conveyor
Infeed Top Rails,

- Adjust Conveyor Guides to allow can to travel
smoothly along the Conveyor and adjust Sensors
on Conveyor to detect the new can diameter.

When the can travel in the Infeed area is

acceptable, re-fit the Infeed Conveyor Top Guide,
ensuring that it is positioned to suit the new
untrimmed can height plus approximately 5mm.

Fit the new diameter Pusher Pads and check the

can transfer around the Infeed Starwheel as
follows.

18.5 Trimmer Infeed Set-up

The vacuum timing position of the Infeed

Starwheel is fixed by the position of baffles
secured inside the vacuum chamber, which are not
adjustable. Fig: 18.5.1

- Check Starwheel to Pusher Pad timing.
Cans sitting in the pocket of the Starwheel at
the transfer position shown (See Fig: 18.5.3 and
Fig: 18.5.4 below) should slide smoothly onto the
Pusher Pad. If the can base has to jump upwards
or move at an angle to get onto the Pusher Pad
then the Starwheel timing may need to be
adjusted. To do so, use a 17mm Spanner to
loosen the four screws shown and turn the
Starwheel, as shown on Fig: 18.5.4 until the can
slides smoothly onto the Pusher Pad. Then re-
tighten screws.

- Check position of Infeed Guide:

The Infeed Guide should be set to assist the
transfer of the cans from the Starwheel onto the
Pusher Pad as required. Normally this guide
should be positioned just clear of the can at the
transfer position (approx. 0.5mm) and follow the
can path. To adjust this Guide slacken the two
M12 screws (19mm Spanner) (1) and adjust
Guide position using eccentric (2) then re- (1) Fig: 18.5.5
secure. (2) (1)

- Check Ramp position, to position cans 0.5mm

in front of pusher pad.
Cans are moved on the Infeed Starwheel by
the Ramp, so that wherever they are axially at
the Infeed, they will be positioned by the Ramp,
approximately 0.5mm in front of the Pusher Pad.
The stronger pusher vacuum pulls the can onto
the pad at the transfer position.
The ramp position can be adjusted using Adjuster Screw
adjuster screw and nut. and Nut

18.6 Trimming Head

Follow the appropriate SOP to remove

the 4 Trimming heads.

18.7 Height Pillar Change

Using an 8mm Allen Key, remove the 3 screws

securing each one of the 4 Height Pillars. This
will stop the connection between the trimming
turret and the pusher turret.

Fig: 18.7.1

Wind the Turrets apart using the adjustment

mechanism and change the Height Pillars.
Use a 24mm Socket, Socket Extension and
Ratcher.

Then Close Turrets, tighten Pillar securing

screws, and release pressure on adjusting screw. Fig: 18.7.2

18.8 Trimming Heads

Fit 202 diameter Trimming Heads, following

the appropriate SOP.

18.9 Discharge Guides

Please refer to the appropriate SOP to remove the

guides.
Change the Lower Discharge Guides ensuring that
they are set parallel with each other and that as the
can travels with the Pusher Pad it moves with
clearance in front of the tips of the Guides.

Change the Pusher side Discharge Guide Plate Fig: 18.9.1

ensuring that the end of the guide does not foul
the Pusher Pads and is positioned approximately
2mm behind the front face of the Pusher Pad.

Change the discharge Hinged Guide, and move

the Trim Side Discharge Bracket on slots until the
End Guide is approximately 2 to 3mm clear of the
Trimming Heads.

To do so, use a 13mm Spanner and

slacken the 2 Head Socket Cap Screws.
Slide the Guard to the appropriate position,
ensuring that there is a 5mm clearance with
the Turret. Fig: 18.9.2

Then tighten the screws.

Transfer Discharge Sensor to 202 dia. Guides and

adjust Guides and Discharge
Sensor position to ensure cans travel smoothly
through Discharge Guides without
dents.
