Functions of lipids

 Storage form of energy ( triglycerides)

 Structure component of biomemembrane ( phospholipid)
 Metabolic regulators( prostaglandin)
 Detergents, surfactant,emulsifying agents
 Electric insulation of neurons
 Insulation against changes in ext. Temp
 Improve tastes and palate
 Absorption of fat soluble vitamins (A,D,E,K)
 Protect internall orgaans by cushioning effect ( subcutaneous fat)
 Shape and contour to body

2. Types of lipids

 Simple – esters of fatty acid with glycerol

 Compound – esters of fatty acid with glycerol with other compounds.
1. Phosphorylated
2. Non phosphorylated
 Derived - from precursor of lipids
 Lipids from other complex compound.

3. Classification of lipids

Simple lipid
 Triacylglycerol or neutral fat
 Waxes

Compound lipids

Phosphorylated

Nitrogen – lecithin , cephalin , phosphatidyl serine

Non nitrogen- phosphatidylinositol,phosphotidylglycerol, cardiolipin

Plasmologen-choline , ethanolamine

Sphingosine- sphingomyelin

Non phosphorylated

Glycosphingolipid – cerebrosides, globosides, gangliosides.

Sulfatides – sulfated cerebrosides; gangliosides; globosides.

Derived lipids

 Fatty acid
 Steroids
 Cholesterol

Lipids. W/ other compounds

 Proteolipid
 Lipoprotein

Ceramide – sphingosine- + fatty acid

Cerebrosides – ceramide + monohexosides
Globosides – ceramide + oligosaccharides
Gangliosides – ceramide + oligosaccharides+ N- acetyl neuraminic acid
