Assignment I – Wireless channel

Due Date: Wednesday, February 28, 2024

Procedure of delivery: Upload document to Moodle.

Ex 1: Consider a wireless network with 𝑓𝑐 = 1.5 GHz, cell of radius 100 m, and
omnidirectional antennas. The transmit power is 𝑃𝑡 = 15 dBm. The receiver
sensitivity is -90 dBm. Under the free-space path loss model:

a) Calculate the received power at distance 𝑑 = 100𝑚.

b) Calculate the link margin.

Ex 2: In a wireless communication network, the signal is affected by log-normal

shadowing with a standard deviation of 8 dB. The average path loss at a distance 𝑑 =
150 m is 112 dB.

a) Find the outage probability at 𝑑 = 150 m, assuming a transmit power of 𝑃𝑡 =

10 mW and minimum power requirement (receiver sensitivity) of 𝑃𝑚𝑖𝑛 = -108
dBm.

b) For an additional transmit power of 10 dBm, calculate the additional link/fade

margin and the new probability of outage at distance 𝑑 = 150 m.
Ex 3: In wireless communication, the Level crossing rate (LCR) and average fade
duration (AFD) are two important parameters that allow understanding the time
varying behavior of a wireless channel. In a wireless communication system, a
vehicle travelling at a speed of 35 m/s receives a signal at a frequency of 1.8 GHz.
The signal experiences Rayleigh fading.

a) How often does the received signal level drop 16 dB below the mean.
b) What is the average fade duration?

2
Level crossing rate (under Rayleigh fading): LCR = √2𝜋𝑓𝑑𝑚𝑎𝑥 𝜌𝑒 −𝜌 where 𝑓𝑑𝑚𝑎𝑥 is the
maximum Doppler shift and 𝜌 is the threshold level normalized to the root mean square (RMS)
signal level.
2
𝑒 𝜌 −1
Average fade duration (under Rayleigh fading): AFD = 𝜌𝑓
𝑑𝑚𝑎𝑥 √2𝜋

Ex 4: A wireless communication channel has a power delay that consists of 4 paths

arriving 0.1 𝜇𝑠 apart. The first path (at 0 𝜇𝑠) is assumed to a unit power (0 dB). Each
subsequent path has a 3dB power reduction compared to the previous one.

a) Calculate the mean delay and the RMS delay spread of the channel.
b) Estimate the 50% coherence bandwidth of the channel.
c) What is the largest transmitted signal bandwidth that would go through this
channel experiencing flat fading.
