PEEL CHAIN PARAGRAPH EXAMPLE

Purple = POINT

GREEN= EXAMPLE/QUOTE

LIGHT BLUE- EXPLANATION

DARK BLUE = MORE DETAIL

RED = ANALYSIS OF LANGUAGE

Mansfield is indeed effective at exploring the controversial topic of corporal punishment from a

female perspective when Spears asks, ‘Not even a whipping?’ The tone of confusion within Spears’

direct speech indicates that she is nonchalant when it comes to violently punishing children; the

modern reader, at first glance, might perceive this in a humorous light due to immediacy of her

reaction and due to the fact that we are so far removed from the context of the short story. This is a

deliberate authorial intention on the part of Mansfield to make the events that follow all the more

shocking; the suggestions offered by Spears become more barbaric as the story continues, which

lowers these temporal boundaries between character, narrator and reader. Therefore, an uneasiness is

created as an overall mood because the reader is unsure of the thought processes of Mrs Bendall

who seems to be influenced easily by others in her social circle – readers assume the worse and

that Dicky will indeed be subject to the same violent beatings, soapings and general violence

that her children receive. The adverb ‘even’ suggests that Mrs Bendall has a whole list of

sinister punishments at her disposal – the reader feels genuine concern for the safety of

vulnerable characters and envisions Mrs Spears as the sly antagonist of the novel who subverts

our contemporary understanding of parenthood.

what is P.E.E?
Point, Evidence, Explanation can be used to analyse. It is useful as a way of structuring
the paragraph.

Point - this is the idea that you are trying to suggest. It is your own idea. It usually answers
the question.

Evidence - this is the quote that you are using to support your Point. You should aim to
integrate the quote with the point.

Explanation - these are the reasons why you think the quote suggests the point. You should
aim for at least three comments.

Example:

Within the poem ‘Still I Rise’, Angelou implies that freedom is a human right that is
natural (Point), through ‘like moons and like suns’ (Evidence). Angelou is discussing the
natural order of the world. It seems as though she is suggesting that it is instinct to desire
freedom and it is human nature to recover from feeling low and suppressed__ (Explanation).
The simile ‘like suns’ suggests that […]
