1Virtual team building

One of the challenges of remote work is the lack of social
interaction and bonding among colleagues. Virtual team building
activities can help bridge this gap and foster a positive team culture.
For example, you can organize online games, trivia, icebreakers, or
quizzes that are fun and engaging. You can also use video
conferencing tools like Zoom or Google Meet to host regular coffee
breaks, happy hours, or casual chats where your remote workers can
share their personal stories, hobbies, or interests.

2Recognition and feedback

Another way to boost employee engagement for remote workers is
to recognize and appreciate their efforts and achievements.
Recognition and feedback can increase their morale, confidence,
and loyalty. You can use various methods to show your gratitude
and support, such as sending personalized emails, cards, or gifts,
giving shout-outs in team meetings or newsletters, or offering
bonuses or incentives. You can also use online platforms like Slack
or Microsoft Teams to create channels or groups where you can
celebrate your remote workers' successes and milestones.

This works well but works best when it is well designed,

engaging and really allows people to get to know each other!
For example we used the HBDI thinking styles assessment to
accelerate that process and give the team a common
language.

I help businesses avoid costly mistakes and save time when hiring employees,
implementing new procedures or new software and equipment. I’m "the
training guy".
The robotic icebreakers appeal to a small number of folks.
Pairing team members on projects, having real conversations
about work, play and life really aren't hard if you are authentic
as a leader. This leads to authenticity from your team. The
grumpy guy will be grumpy. That's ok. Accept your team and
use strengths and offset weaknesses.

Feedback is definitely important, in all work environments: co-

located, hybrid or remote! Having a “shoutout” and
celebration channels on Slack or Teams is a great way to
encourage celebration! Regular 1-1’s with managers is even
more important in a remote environment and should always
include recognition and feedback.

Structured feedback mixed with spontaneous recognition

brings the best of both worlds to a remote team. Structured
reviews, every quarter or 6 months, ensures that team
members know where they stand. Recognizing when someone
goes above and beyond also reinforces that an employee is
doing something right - far too often, managers focus on what
their subordinates are doing wrong. There's power in
feedback, and it allows you to slowly shape you team in the
right direction.

3Learning and development

Remote workers may feel isolated or left behind when it comes to
learning and development opportunities. As a personnel manager,
you can help them grow and advance their skills and careers by
providing them with access to online courses, webinars, podcasts, or
books that are relevant to their roles and goals. You can also create
a mentoring or coaching program where you can pair up your
remote workers with senior or experienced team members who can
guide and advise them. Additionally, you can encourage your
remote workers to share their learnings and insights with each other
through online forums, blogs, or podcasts.

4Wellness and wellbeing

Working remotely can also affect your employees' physical and
mental health. They may face challenges such as stress, burnout,
loneliness, or ergonomic issues. To promote wellness and wellbeing
among your remote workers, you can offer them flexible work
hours, breaks, or days off that suit their needs and preferences. You
can also provide them with resources or benefits that can help them
cope with their challenges, such as counseling, meditation, fitness,
or nutrition programs. Moreover, you can create a wellness
committee or group where your remote workers can support each
other and share tips and best practices for staying healthy and
happy.

Flexibility is key! The trend toward 4 day workweeks in one great

way companies can provide that flexibility and increase wellness.
Unlimited PTO also contributes to wellness options and greater
wellbeing.

In addition to the above suggestions, setting up learning

buddies, regular “lunch and learn” events and cohort based
learning all contribute to the shared learning that is so
important in a remote environment.

5Collaboration and communication

Effective collaboration and communication are essential for any
team, but especially for remote workers who may feel disconnected
or out of sync with their colleagues. As a personnel manager, you
can facilitate collaboration and communication among your remote
workers by using online tools and platforms that enable them to
chat, share files, manage projects, and brainstorm ideas. You can
also set clear expectations and guidelines for communication, such
as frequency, mode, tone, and response time. Furthermore, you can
encourage your remote workers to give and receive feedback, ask
questions, and voice their opinions and concerns.

6Engagement surveys
Finally, one of the best ways to measure and improve employee
engagement for remote workers is to conduct regular engagement
surveys. Engagement surveys can help you understand your remote
workers' needs, challenges, satisfaction, and motivation. You can
use online survey tools like SurveyMonkey or Google Forms to
create and distribute your surveys. You can also use different types
of questions, such as rating scales, multiple choice, or open-ended,
to gather quantitative and qualitative data. Most importantly, you
should analyze the results and take action based on the feedback
and suggestions from your remote workers.
