Theory and Treatment froma Psychodynamic Point of View Ping-Nie Pao SCHIZOPHRENIC DISORDERS Theory and Treatment from a Psychodynamic Point of View Ping-Nie Pao At the turn of the century, psychoanalysis revolutionized our conceptualization of schizophrenia. Prior to that, schizophrenia was conceived of as a hereditary-consti- tutional-degenerative disease of the brain. Psychoanalysis taught us to think of schizo- phrenia in terms of human development. A certain combination of nature and nur- ture in the first weeks of life results in a deficient capacity for adaptation, which becomes increasingly impaired, eventuat- ing in schizophrenic illness To enunciate this viewpoint, Freud formu- lated a comprehensive theory of schizo- phrenia, describing the etiology, the na- ture of deficient states of adaptive capacity, and the mechanism of symptom formation. Many writers have subsequently contributed to the enrichment of various aspects of that theory. The primary aim of this book is to collate their contributions and to offer a cohesive psychoanalytic theory of schizophrenia. The integrated theory of schizophrenia pre- sented in this book not only offers guide- lines for the psychoanalytic treatment of schizophrenic patients, but also provides new systems for subgrouping the schizo- phrenias. These systems make prognostic evaluation possible and aid in therapeutic planning for a given patient at the time of initial consultation.
