Class 10 - English Language and Literature

Maximum Marks: 80
Time Allowed: : 3 hours

General Instructions:

1. 15-minute prior reading time allotted for Q-paper reading.

2. The Question Paper contains THREE sections-READING, GRAMMAR & WRITING and LITERATURE.
3. Attempt questions based on specific instructions for each part.

Section A
1. Read the text carefully and answer the questions:
1. Nature is our mother, our first teacher. The greatest lesson that she teaches us is to maintain an equilibrium in life. We
learn to maintain composure through our joys, sorrows and fears. In fact, there are a thousand lessons that nature can
teach us, provided we look for them.
2. With time, a sapling grows into a fullgrown tree; something so tiny and delicate develops into a strong tree capable of
supporting others. No matter how tall it grows, how much it may flourish, or how many animals and birds it may
support, its roots are firmly buried from where it once rose. That's a lesson - to keep ourselves grounded, respect and
embrace our roots, and give something back to those humble beginnings that nurtured us into who we are.
3. Then there is the message of peaceful coexistence. 'I am because we are.' Nature provides every creature a chance to
exist. However, the existence of one creature or being depends on the existence of the other. The tiger eats the
antelope; without the antelope, the tiger wouldn't survive. Likewise, without tigers, the overabundance of antelopes
would cause them to starve to death.
4. I wonder if you have noticed that when birds or squirrels see a predator, they give out an alarm call to their fellow
creatures. of the lurking danger. They put themselves in danger to save the lives of others. Many animals, like the
salmon, usually die atter they spawn, but this doesn't stop them One life extinguished for the betterment of others is a
small price to pay.
5. The snow melts in the warmth of spring to give birth to fresh green leaves. In autumn these leaves age into shades of
gold only to be buried in the cold grave of winter. Change is inevitable; the sooner we embrace this, the better it is for
us. We must also understand that even in pair there is growth. If you cut a hole in the tree, it will grow around it. No
matter what may come in its way, a river will continue to flow. Similarly, no matter what grief may break your heart,
nature teaches that life goes on.
6. Keep in mind life isn't about making lists and trying to be one step ahead of others. Life is to live. Take a break-stop
being a workaholic, and smell the roses, do whatever makes you feel happy and most of all spend some time with
nature to pick up invaluable lessons.
i. According to the author, what is the greatest lesson being taught by nature?
ii. What does the phrase 'I am because we are' conveys?

Delhi
Sir,
Subject: Awareness to keep Metro clean
I would like to thank the DMRC, Delhi for providing the citizens of Delhi with so much ease in commuting. I frequently
use the Metro and find it very convenient. While travelling, I have noticed that though there is strict vigilance still people
deface the Metro trains and stations. The tendency of people to deface public property causes lots of problems. They
think that it's not their work to maintain the cleanliness around the public property like Metro. I feel that if the
DMRC, collaborates with the Directorate of Education and runs awareness programs in schools, we would be able to
cover a wide spectrum of people and spread the message. It would be a great service to the city if you address this issue
in your daily.
Thank you,
Yours faithfully,
Sweety.

16. The line graph compares the number of cars stolen for every 1000 vehicles in four countries from 1990 to 1999. Overall,
it can be seen that car thefts were far higher in Bangladesh than in the other three counties throughout the whole time
frame.
To begin, car thefts in the UK, France and India followed a fairly similar pattern over the first five years, all remaining at
between 5 and 10 per thousand. The general trend though for France and India was a decline in the number of vehicles
stolen over the period, with both at around 6 in 1999. In contrast, the UK experienced an upward trend, starting the
period at approximately 8, and finishing at just under 15.
Interestingly, car thefts in Bangladesh started at 18 per thousand, which far exceeded that of the other countries. It then
fluctuated over the next nine years, reaching a peak of 20 thefts per 1000 in 1996, and ending the period slightly lower
than where it began, at approximately 17 per thousand.

The given line graph shows the data of trends in western wear among the youth in last two decades. The preferred
clothing is jeans, shorts and dress and the total number of people is in hundreds.
The given data starts in 2008 and shows very less number of people being interested in western wear. The number stands
at less than 100 where the most preferred is jeans and least preferred is shorts. Jeans sees a good increase in the number
of people as it shows a hike and reaches more than 300 and higher towards the next decade. Throughout the first decade
shorts remained least preferred and dwells at less than even 50 and gradually showed an increase towards the beginning
of next decade. The data of shorts is very dramatic and shows a sudden hike or growing interest in people. Dress is the
second preferred choice and it also shows a growth in number towards the next decade. In the first decade it remained at
less than hundred but in the end touched 100.
The most preferred choice is jeans which although started with a little less than 100 people interested in it, showed a
stable growth of interest in the first decade itself. It reached its highest most in the next decade which also shows a
sudden increase in shorts in next decade almost levelling off with jeans.
To conclude the given data, we can say that after the two decades both jeans and shorts are the most preferred choices
and even dress seemed to show great momentum and seems to be levelling off with the first two most preferred choices.

19. Answer ANY FOUR of the following in about 40-50 words each.
i. Kisa Gotami was sad because her only son had died. In her hour of grief, she went from house to house in search of
medicine to cure him. She had lost her senses and became selfish in wanting her son back. Then a man suggested her
to go to the Buddha as he was the only one who could help her.
ii. Change never come easy. But when people come together for a good cause, we can accomplish great things. In the
same way, each and every part of the tree rises against the slaughtering of men and wages a long and hard struggle to
liberate themselves from the bondage of man. Ultimately they are victorious. They return to their original home
where they should be.
iii. Valli showed that she was a self-respecting girl. She politely refused to accept a free drink from the conductor. Even I

memories, nor it can replace the things that we love or the things that really matter. Not every loss can be replaced by

her grandfather and great-grandfather owned the land extended to Burnt Marsh, which meant that the Oxen Meadows

and seems to have no energy.

fabricated a story that it was the second time in a month that somebody had got into his room through the balcony.
Max said that he had no idea about the balcony.
iii. Ebright proved through his project that viceroy butterflies copied monarchs because monarchs didn’t taste good to

the birds, viceroy copied monarchs. The similarity between monarchs and viceroy butterflies was their orange and
black wing colouration.
21. Answer ANY ONE of the following in about 100-120 words.
i. The tiger says, "I was born wild and free, I should be in a jungle, hiding in a shadow to hunt for a prey, but I am
locked in concrete cell. My strength is behind the bars. I long to be free again, to roam the forests and plains."
Mandela replies, "I, too, was born free, but I have been in this prison for years. I, too, long to be free again."
The tiger asks, "What is freedom?"
Mandela replies, "Freedom is the ability to live as we choose, to do as we please, to be free from oppression and
tyranny."
The tiger says, "That sounds like a very difficult thing to achieve. I'm not sure I could ever be truly free."

ii. It is truly said that 'All grown-ups were once children... but only a few of them remember it.' Bringing up teenagers is
truly challenging and fun. Teens can be rebellious and apparently not headed with a highly independent perspective.
In such circumstances, felling at them, and nagging them, as done in the poem with Amanda, will only make matters
worse. Forcing decisions on them only make them detached, as we see in Amanda's case, where she wishes to be the
alone mermaid, an orphan, or the lonely Rapunzel. Amanda's condition may be witnessed in every child's life. When
children are told a long list of do's and don'ts then they feel targeted. Then they start comparing their own life with
that of the grown-ups around then be it their own parents, teachers or kinds. They feel like shutting off their mind
from the outside world. But they should always remember that whatever the parents or teachers are telling is for their
good only. Grown-ups can befriend the children but to a certain limits. The habits inculcated in children by their
parents will help them in their adult life.

22. Answer ANY ONE of the following in about 100-120 words.

i. Yes, girls should be aware of their rights. It's not just about girls, it's about everyone. Even boys should know their
rights. Yes, girls and boys should have equal rights, duties and privileges. Both have been created by God so we don't
have any right to differentiate between them on any grounds.
However, our society does differentiate between them on many grounds. Society has delegated distinct roles to girls
and boys and they are expected to behave accordingly. Girls are generally dominated by boys. Girls are expected to
do household chores and boys are expected to work outside. In the present scenario, girls can be seen working in
different fields but gender discrimination has still not left its roots.
Girls are generally not sent to school neither are they fed well. However, we need to realize that girls form the
backbone of a family so it is very important for them to study and be aware of things.
Girls have been the victim of discrimination for a long and in many households, the scenario is still the same. Society
needs a change in its perspective so that each girl is treated equally.
ii. For the motion
You may begin like this...
Being frugal is the quality of a prudent person who is economical in the consumption of resources available to him.
These resources can be in any form be it food, clothes money or just about anything. Avoiding wastage of any kind is
the greatest virtue of man. We should always remember that resources available to us by mother earth are scanty, we
should make judicious use of them. Today, the whole world is hit by deadly Corona, people are out of jobs, some are
working from home, some are doing nothing. In such a scenario the prudent use of money becomes all the more
important. So, always use money wisely.
Against the motion,
There are no two ways about it that money makes the world go round. It's the power of money that rules the world in
today's time. The more we flaunt it, the more progressive we are thought to be. Everybody loves to possess it. So, if
we have more why not just show it. After all being thrifty always doesn't pay, one needs to look for one's own
comfort as well. Spend what you have today, do not bother for tomorrow. For no one knows what tomorrow has in
store for us.
