Proposed of this Task

Use of ShrinKit heat gun for shrink wrapping goods.
Demonstrating ShrinKit heat gun on customer premises.
Who is at Risk
Operator – contact with hot surfaces resulting in burns, fire.
Others – fire.

Only trained personnel should operate the equipment.

Before starting the task:

Check the working environment
The area for shrink-wrapping must be free from dust, flammable and combustible liquids and materials.
The shrink-gun must also be operated in a well illuminated, and ventilated area to ensure good all round
vision and airflow.

Is the area free of combustible materials, well ventilated and illuminated? YES / NO
If NO, what measures have been implemented to reduce the risk to an acceptable level?

Check the work equipment

1 Safety equipment must be used at all times of operation including, heat proof gloves and eye
protection.

2 Before proceeding please check the correct LPG gas bottle is being is used. Must use
either Propane(red), or Butane(blue), Propane is the recommended gas for this operation.
Also check the gas bottle outlet is clean.

3 Connect regulator to gas bottle outlet and gas hose to the other end of regulator, making sure
hose is not tangled and free from obstruction, connect other end of the gas hose to the shrink
gun, tighten using correct size spanners(both hose ends are BSP left hand thread).

4 The Hose and all connections must be checked with either a leak detection aerosol spray or
soapy water.

5 Point the shrink gun towards the floor and squeeze trigger to ignite shrink gun, release trigger to
make sure the dead mans handle is working, the shrink gun should immediately switch off.

Method Of Operation:
1 Prime system by turning the gas bottle supply on, press the red safety valve on the regulator for
3-5 seconds.

2 Never direct the shrink gun towards any other personnel.

3 Never look in burner opening when shrink gun is connected to gas bottle.

4 Always make sure gas hose is either beside or ideally behind operative, never directly in front
of where shrink gun is being operated.

5 Point the shrink gun towards a clear area of the floor and squeeze the trigger slowly. It is
possible that the shrink gun will ignite with only one small squeeze of the trigger, especially
if it is warm and the operator has had a small amount of practice.

6 The trigger must be depressed to maintain flame.

 7 Care should be taken to ensure gas bottle is not pulled along by the gas hose which will result
in fatigue of the gas hose and can also cause the gas bottle to topple over.

After Completing Operation:

1 Once operation has been completed or the shrink gun is being unattended, close gas bottle
supply, point the shrink towards a clear area of the floor and ignite shrink gun to burn off any
excess gas which will still be present in system, keeping trigger depressed until the flame
extinguished. The system should never be left primed when unattended.

2 Never lay shrink gun on floor, always hang the shrink gun up using the eyelet at the rear end of
handle.
