PCA-Structural Frame Worksheet

Worksheet Objectives:
1. Describe the structural frame
2. Apply the structural frame to your personal case situation

Complete the following making sure to support your ideas and cite from the textbook and other
course materials per APA guidelines. After the peer review, you have a chance to update this and
format for your Electronic Portfolio due in Module 6.

1) Briefly restate your situation from Module 1 and your role.

The organization that I will be sharing about is the Bluegrass Army Depot
in Richmond, KY. This organization as a whole is a storage depot for both
conventional and chemical weapons. My role in this was an explosives inspector
and the struggle involved to destroy the chemical weapons in the time frame
given.

2) Describe how the structure of the organization influenced the situation.

The structure of this organization stemmed from the structure that the
Army normally uses. In the specific organization, there was a connection between
the civilian and military presence associated. However, all of the workers were
actually civilians while overall leadership was military based. The structure
consisted of multiple levels of supervision where essentially what took place day
to day was routed up the chain of command.

This correlates with how most operations work in the military. A

structures design rarely starts from scratch. It is usually created from accumulated
wisdom and experiences from others (Bolman, 2021). I think using a miltary
based structure was benefical in a lot of ways because everything was driven by
safety and procedure. However, this caused the overall timeline to be far longer
than expected in terms of completion.

3) Recommend how you would use structure for an alternative course of action
regarding your case.
I would use this structure for an alternative course of action regarding my case by
ensuring communication at all levels was present. At times, I felt like there was a lack of

1
communication but with this structure I think if done properly, everyone should be on the
same page. I think this would allow for better collaboration and ultimately better results.

I think this structure also allows for a better overall team cohesion. When doing
any type of job that is hazardous, I think it is important to ensure your team is close and
trusts each other. Each explosives inspector was part of an individual group (Rocket
Team). This allowed for 4-5 members to work with each other on a daily basis and learn
each others strengths and weaknesses and mesh as a team overall.

4) Reflect on what you would do or not do differently given what you have learned
about this frame.

For me personally, I would only change the fact that at times I wasn’t as
safety oriented as I should have been. At times, miltary based procedures and
safety requirments can be tedious and at times create more problems. In this case,
the biggest proble we faced was finishing on time which we were unable to do.
Like most military operations, saying that safety requirments are slowing you
down is not an option.

If I could go back and do it again I would focus more on ways that we

could have improved our efficiency as a team and how we could have been safer
day to day. One thing I would not change is the bonds I formed with the others I
worked with because they were some of the best coworkers I have ever had and
we all got along very well.
