MAINTENANCE MANUAL

1 General
The Blohm + Voss Manual Tongs are designed for making-up and breaking-out
connections of tubulars, ranging from light weight tubing/casing to drill pipe and
drill collars.
The use of multiple latch steps and interchangeable hinge and lug jaw assemblies
extends the range of the tongs.
Tongs can be assembled for either making-up or breaking-out by removing the
hanger and turning the complete tong over.

MAINTENANCE MANUAL

2 Design
The parts are made from low - alloy heat treatable cast steel for operations at
ambient temperatures of -20 degrees C.

2.1 Installation and commissioning

To install the BV and WRT manual tongs, the tong support line should be
connected to the suspension ring.
Install the right lug and/or hinge jaw, to cover the size range of the pipe to be
connected. Ensure that the tong is capable of handling the torque required. See
chapter 1.1
For easy tong operation, freely suspend the tong up by the tong support line as
close to well center as conveniently possible. This reduces the arc of swing and
the distance that the tong must travel to well center.
With lug jaw open and free from pipe, balance the tong. Carry this out from lever to
latch and from side to side by adjusting the hanger adjustment bolt and/or
balancing screw. For best operation the long jaw should be about 1” lower then the
short jaw.
The pull line must than be connected to the end of the lever. A back up line, sized
to safely withstand the tong maximum rating, should in all cases be connected to
secure safe operation.

MAINTENANCE MANUAL

3. Foreword
Covered in this manual are methods to be employed for the inspection and
maintenance of the equipment covered on an item-by-item basis.

The Maintenance Manual described is based on API - recommended practice

for handling tools and Blohm and Voss Repair GmbH experience with
manual tongs.
This special practice outlines a procedure for methods of inspection and
maintenance of handling tools to help prevent injury to personal and
irreparable damage to equipment.

4. Deterioration of Equipment
Normal wear in the course of use will eventually reduce the capability of the
manual tong. The existence of cracks or the appearance of defects can
indicate severe deterioration, even impending failure, and prompt attention is
required either to remove the manual tong from service immediately or to
undertake appropriate repair as required.

5. Inspection
Before inspection all foreign material such as dirt, paint, grease oil, scale, etc.
should be removed from the areas to be inspected by a suitable method.

5.1 Methods of Inspection

• Before starting a trip, the manual tong should be examined for proper
function of the latching mechanism (latch, latch spring). Hinge pin holes
should be checked whether they have become egg shaped due to over
torque. Special observation has to be made for the die contact area in
lug- and hinge jaws (loose dies, die retainer pins).
• Manual Tong Hinge Pins are designed to wear before the Jaw Bosses
wear. Hinge Pins should be checked on a frequent basis. Manual Tongs,
Jaws, Levers, etc., will have a longer life if Hinge Pins are replaced when
worn.
• Check Hinge Pins & Dies weekly.
• Grease all Hinge Pins daily.
• Hinge Pins should be tightened correctly. Tighten Hinge Pin until Jaw
becomes hard to work; back off ¼ turn.
• Manual tongs should not have excessive play between jaws, causing the
latch lug jaw to misalign with the latch.

6

Blohm+Voss

MAINTENANCE MANUAL

• This can cause the tongs to come off the pipe or not bite the pipe.
Check for the following: Loose Hinge Pin Nut
Worn Hinge Pins
Worn Jaw Bosses
Wear on vertical spacing between Jaws.
• If Hinge Pins are bent, tongs have been over torqued.
• If Hinge Pins are bent, jaw bosses may also be elongated.
• Shop inspection should be immediately performed.
• Never exceed torque rating.
• Always pull at 90 degree.
• Tongs should hang level
• Check Dies and Keepers.

5.2 Frequency of Inspection

5.2.1 Routine - Daily Field Inspection
Field inspection of the manual tongs in an operating condition should be
made by the crew or the supervisor, daily!

5.2.2 Semi - Annual Inspection

A thorough on-the-job shutdown inspection should be made on a periodic
basis, typically at six months intervals or as special circumstances may
require.
Generally the tong inspection should be carried out immediately when the
equipment is returned to the base, warehouse etc. and is to be carried out
prior toits being sent on the next job.
The tong should be dismantled and inspected in a suitable equipped facility
for excessive wear, cracks, flaws or deformations.
Corrections should be made in accordance with recommendations which can
be obtained from Blohm +Voss Repair GmbH.

5.2.3 Critical Load Inspection

Critical loads may be experienced, for example, severe loads, impact loads handling
stuck pipes, etc. If in the judgement of the supervisor a critical load has occurred or
may occur, an on -the-job shutdown inspection equivalent to the semi-annual field
inspection should be carried out.
If critical loads are anticipated, the inspection should be conducted prior to and after
the occurrence of such loading. If over torque loads are unexpectedly encountered,
the inspection should be conducted immediately after such an occurrence.

MAINTENANCE MANUAL

5.2.4 Dismantling Inspection

When need is shown in a field inspection, dismantling of the manual tong should be
made, and an inspection in a suitably equipped facility should be carried out.

6. Measuring of Wear
It is obvious that visual inspection cannot suffice for most tong checks. To measure
hinge pin holes, please, do not forget, to use calipers and to read the results on a
rule.

Hinge pins, latch pins and socket holes are not normally measured for wear in the
field. When it becomes apparent that the hinge or latch pins are loosing, the tong
should be dismantled for general engineering check up.

7. Maintenance and Repair

7.1 Preventive Maintenance
A regular preventive maintenance program should be established for all tongs.
Written maintenance procedures should be given to the crew or maintenance
personal. Care should be taken by instruction plates and warning labels. They should
not be missing, damaged or illegible!

7.2 Proper Repairs

Repairs, which are not performed by Blohm + Voss Repair GmbH,
should be made in accordance with methods or procedures approved by Blohm +
Voss Repair GmbH
Minor cracks or defects, which may be removed without reducing safety or operation
of the tong, can be removed by grinding. Following the repair, the part should again
be inspected by an appropriate method to insure, the defect has been completely
removed.

7.3 Beyond Repair

If the manual tong or parts of it are defective beyond repair, it should be destroyed
immediately.
