Managing background noise
Background noise levels can have a significant
effect on audiometric results. Ambient noise
levels must therefore be low to ensure a subject’s
hearing test results are not elevated.
It is considered suitable to test in environments
where background noise is around 30dBA or less.
Where this is not possible, the use of noise-
reducing enclosures such as Audiocups and an
audiology booth can help with testing in a noisier
environment.
The below table shows the acceptable
background levels which can be tested in,
depending on the headset or booth used.
These values should be checked on-site and
it is important to ensure testing is carried out
away from standard background noise, as well
as impact background noise which can cause
distractions. These include toilets, traffic and
canteens.

Sound attenuating booths

An audiology booth can be used to reduce background noise levels and should:

• Be situated as far away from noise sources as possible

• Have a window and door with an internal handle so that the test subject doesn’t feel cut off
• Of sufficient size to avoid a feeling of claustrophobia (e.g. 250s and 350s booths)
• Have adequate (silent) ventilation and a comfortable seat so the test subject feels in contact
but cannot see the hand movements of the tester

purchase. In the unlikely occurrence that there are defects in Amplivox goods due to faulty
manufacture or failure of original materials or components, we will correct them free of charge.
