2. States Startup Ranking in 2024-

33 states and Union territories (Uts) participated in


the exercise, which ranked them under five categories:
best performers, top performers, leaders, aspiring
leaders and emerging startup ecosystem.

3. Global Hunger Index 2023

The 2023 Global Hunger Index gives India a rank of


111 out of 125 countries. This indicates a hunger
severity level of ‘serious’ for the country. This also
marks a fall from the previous year’s rank of 107
(2022).

GHI ranks countries on a 100-point scale, 0


representing zero/no hunger. The GHI scores are
based on four indicators.

Taken together, the component indicators reflect


deficiencies in calories as well as in micronutrients.
Thus, the GHI reflects both aspects of hunger
(undernutrition and malnutrition).
1.UNDERNOURISHMENT: the share of the population
whose caloric intake is insufficient.
2.CHILD STUNTING: the share of children under the
age of five who have low height for their age.
3.CHILD WASTING: the share of children under the age
of five who have low weight for their height.
4.CHILD MORTALITY: the mortality rate of children
under the age of five (a reflection of the fatal mix of
inadequate nutrition and unhealthy environments)

4. Highlights of Global Peace Index 2023:

It is released annually by the Institute for Economics


and Peace (IEP).
•2023 Global Peace Index (GPI)ranked 163
independent states and territories according to their
level of peacefulness.
•It measures the state of peace across three domains:
•Societal safety and security;
•Ongoing domestic and international conflict;
•Militarization;
•The average level of global peacefulness deteriorated
by 0.42 per cent.

•Iceland is the most peaceful country in the world– a


title it has held since 2008. It is accompanied at the
top by Denmark, Ireland, New Zealand, and Austria.
•Conversely, Afghanistan is the least peaceful country
in the world for the eighth consecutive year. It is
followed by Yemen, Syria, South Sudan, and the
Democratic Republic of the Congo.
•India has occupied the 126th spot in the rankings,
two higher than its previous position.
•The report stated that India experienced an
improvement of 3.5 per cent in overall peacefulness
over the past year, owing to improvements in violent
crime, neighbouring countries’ relations, and political
instability.
•Among other countries, Nepal, China, Sri Lanka,
United States of America, and Pakistan, and have been
ranked 79, 80, 107, 131, 146, respectively.

5. India’s Rank in World Happiness Index 2023

• The World Happiness Index 2023, published by the


UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network,
evaluates nations based on their level of
happiness. For the sixth consecutive year, Finland
has held the top position due to a score that
places it far above all other nations.
• Denmark is still in second place, with a confidence
interval between that position and fourth. India

ranks as one of the least happy nations in the


world, coming in at position 126 out of 136.
• As per the Happiness Index, India’s rank was 136
out of 146 nations in 2022. It even falls behind
the countries that are close by, such as Nepal,
China, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka.
• India frequently ranks low on the World Happiness
Index despite having the fastest-growing economy
in the world, which has some people wondering
how it can be listed behind unstable nations.

6. Press Freedom Index 2023—India’s Rank


• According to World Press Freedom Index, India
ranks at 161. The index is an essential indicator of
media freedom in each country and provides a
yardstick for measuring progress in the field.
• World Press Freedom Index 2023 ranks countries
based on their press freedom records and is
published by Reporters Without Borders.Norway is
at top.

7. CLIMATE CHANGE PERFORMANCE INDEX

• As per an annual report published on the sidelines


of the ongoing COP28 at Dubai recently, India has
been effectively ranked fourth in climate
performance 2024.

• India secured the seventh rank in the CLIMATE


CHANGE PERFORMANCE INDEX(CCPI) for 2022,
exhibiting an improvement from its eighth position
last year.
• Despite this, India effectively stands fourth as no
country occupies the top three ranks in the ‘very
high’ performance category.
• The report was released during COP28 in Dubai,
highlighting India’s score of 70.25% in climate
performance, a notable increase from its 67.35%
score the previous year.

8. DEMOCRACY INDEX

• India has slipped 10 places in the2019 Democracy


Index to 51stposition.In2 018,India was ranked at
41.
• The Democracy Index(began in 2006)which is
prepared by theEconomist Intelligence Unit,
provides a snapshot of the state of democracy
worldwide in 165 independent states and two
territories.
• The Economist Intelligence Unit is the research
and analysis division of The Economist Group,
which is the sister company to The Economist
newspaper.

9. Index of Economic Freedom

•It is an annual guide published to measure the


progress made in advancing economic freedom which
it claims brings greater prosperity.
•The index ranks 12 indicators from property rights to
financial freedom under four categories i.e. rule of law,
size of government, regulatory efficiency and open
markets.
•It believes that the ideals of economic freedom are
strongly associated with healthier societies, cleaner
environments, greater per capita wealth, human
development, democracy, and poverty elimination.
•The 2021 edition measures economic freedom only
in independent countries where governments exercise
sovereign control of economic policies.
•It relies primarily on the World Trade Organization’s
annual World Tariff Profiles for trade-weighted average
tariff rates in order to reflect the most authoritative
and consistent tariff information.

10. Global Gender Gap Index:

Global Gender Gap Report is released annually by the


World Economic Forum (WEF) since 2006.

• It measures gender parity in 146 countries and


across four areas: economic participation and
opportunity, educational attainment, health and
survival and political empowerment.

11. Highlights of Global Gender Gap Report 2023:

• India was ranked at 127 out of 146 countries in


terms of gender parity, an
improvement of eight places from last year.
• According to the report, India had attained parity
in enrolment across all levels of education.
• India had closed 64.3% of the overall gender gap.
However, it underlined that India had reached only
36.7 % parity on economic participation and
opportunity.
• On political empowerment, India has registered
25.3% parity, with women representing 15.1% of
parliamentarians — the highest for the country
since the inaugural report in 2006.
• The index ranked India’s neighbours Pakistan at
142, Bangladesh at 59, China
at 107,Nepal at 116, Sri Lanka at 115 and Bhutan at
103.
• Iceland is the most gender-equal country in the
world for the 14th consecutive year and the only
one to have closed more than 90% of its gender
gap.

• Overall, theSouthern Asian region has achieved


63.4% gender parity, the second lowest of the
eight regions.

12. NITI Aayog’s Report ‘National Multidimensional


Poverty
Index: A Progress Review 2023’

• “National Multidimensional Poverty Index: Progress


Review 2023” report is based on the latest
National Family Health Survey-5 (2019-21) and is
the second edition of the National
Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI).
• The first edition of the National Multidimensional
Poverty Index (MPI) was released in the year
2021.
• Like the global MPI, India’s national MPI has three
equally weighted dimensions – Health, Education,
and Standard of living – which are represented by
12 indicators.
• These include nutrition, child and adolescent
mortality, maternal health, years of schooling,
school attendance, cooking fuel, sanitation,
drinking water, electricity, housing, assets, and
bank accounts. Marked improvement is witnessed
across all the 12 indicators.
