The Percentile for Ungrouped Data
The percentile is one way of determining the measures of position by dividing
the set of data into one hundred groups. In symbol, P10, P20 , P30 , .…… P100.. They are
computed in the same way that the decile are calculated.

Illustrating this by
using the number line.

Illustration number 1.

Find the 20th percentile or P20 of the following test score of a random sample of ten
students:
75 , 76 , 77, 81 , 82 , 84 , 87, 90 , 95 , 98

Solution:

Step 1. Number each data by each order (If the data is already arranged in
ascending order

75 , 76 , 77, 81 , 82 , 84 , 87, 90 , 95 , 98

Step 2. Use the general formula in finding the percentile rank or order.
k (n+ 1)
Pk = round off to the nearest integer
100
Where P- is the percentile, k- is the percentile number, n - is the number of data.

In the real life situation given k is the percentile number which is 20, n is the number of
data given which is 10.
Now substitute the value of k and n in the formula below.

K = 20, n = 10
k (n+ 1) 20(10+1)
Pk = 100
, P20 = 100
20(11)
= 100
220
= 100
= 2 .20 round off to the nearest integer
≈ 2 this means P20 is the second element.
Therefore P20 ¿ 76.

•Suppose, the Math grades of 15 students are:

67, 98 , 81 , 76 , 71 , 85 , 56 , 95 , 85 , 64 , 92 , 63 , 75 , 83 , 77

Find the 70th percentile or P70.

Step 1. Arrange the grades in ascending order. Then write the number of position
56, 63 , 64 , 67, 71 , 75 , 76 , 77, 81 , 83 , 85 , 85 , 92 , 95 , 98

Step 1. Use the general formula in finding the position of percentile.

Pk = and round off to the nearest integer.

In the given situation k = 70, n = 15. Substitute these values in
k (n+ 1)
Position of Pk = 100
70(15+1)
P70 = 100
70(16)
= 100

= 100 , = 11.20 or 11 the position of P70 in the
given set of data.
Therefore, P70 = 85
This means that the grades to the left ( ) are equal or less than 85 and the grades to
the right ( ) are the grades equal or higher than 85.
Illustration number 3.

•A group of students obtain the following scores in their Online Statistics Class.

{1, 6, 3, 9, 7, 3, 5, 4, 8, 10}. Find the 50th percentile of the scores.

Step 1. Arrange the scores in ascending order:

1 , 3 , 3 , 4 , 5 , 6 , 7 , 8 , 9 , 10
Step 2. Number the order of the data.

1 , 3 , 3 , 4 , 5 , 6 , 7 , 8 , 9 , 10

Step 3. use the general formula in finding percentile position.

where n is the number of data and 50 is the number of percentile or the value of k in the
formula.

So, in this case k = 50 and n = 10 substitute the value of k and n in the given
formula

= 5.50 round down = 5

Therefore 5 is the location of P50, the data is equal to 5. P50 = 5
