Part 3. Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to
indicate the correct answer to each of the questions from 16 to 22. (1.4 points)
Biological diversity has become widely recognized as a critical conservation issue only in the
past two decades. The rapid destruction of the tropical rain forests, which are the ecosystems with the
highest known species diversity on Earth, has awakened people to the importance and fragility of
biological diversity. The high rate of species extinctions in these environments is jolting, but it is
important to recognize the significance of biological diversity in all ecosystems. As the human
population continues to expand, it will negatively affect one after another of Earth‟s ecosystems. In
terrestrial ecosystems and in fringe marine ecosystems (such as wetlands), the most common problem
is habitat destruction. In most situations, the result is irreversible. Now humans are beginning to
destroy marine ecosystems through other types of activities, such as disposal and runoff of poisonous
waste; in less than two centuries, by significantly reducing the variety of species on Earth, they have
irrevocably redirected the course of evolution.
Certainly, there have been periods in Earth‟s history when mass extinctions have occurred. The
extinction of the dinosaurs was caused by some physical event, either climatic or cosmic. There have
also been less dramatic extinctions, as when natural competition between species reached an extreme
conclusion. Only 0.01 percent of the species that have lived on Earth have survived to the present, and
it was largely chance that determined which species survived and which died out.
However, nothing has ever equaled the magnitude and speed with which the human species is
altering the physical and chemical world and demolishing the environment. In fact, there is wide
agreement that it is the rate of change humans are inflicting, even more than the changes themselves,
that will lead to biological devastation. Life on Earth has continually been in flux as slow physical and
chemical changes have occurred on Earth, but life needs time to adapt-time for migration and genetic
adaptation within existing species and time for the proliferation of new genetic material and new
species that may be able to survive in new environments.

16. What does the passage mainly discuss?

A. The variety of species found in tropical rain forests
B. The cause of the extinction of the dinosaurs
C. The time required for species to adapt to new environments
D. The impact of human activities on Earth‟s ecosystems
17. The word “jolting” in the passage is closest in meaning to ______.
A. illuminating B. unknown C. shocking D. predicted
Page 6 of 10
18. What does the word “they” in the passage refer to?
A. ecosystems B. humans C. species D. activities
19. The author mentions all the following as examples of the effect of humans on the world‟s
ecosystems EXCEPT ______.
A. damage to marine ecosystems
B. habitat destruction in wetlands
C. the introduction of new varieties of plant species
D. destruction of the tropical rain forests
20. The author mentions the extinction of the dinosaurs in the 2nd paragraph to emphasize that ______.
A. not all mass extinctions have been caused by human activity
B. actions by humans could not stop the irreversible process of a species‟ extinction
C. Earth‟s climate has changed significantly since the dinosaurs‟ extinction
D. the cause of the dinosaurs‟ extinction is unknown
21. According to the passage, natural evolutionary change is different from changes caused by humans
in which changes caused by humans ______.
A. affect fewer ecosystems B. are occurring at a much faster rate
C. are reversible D. are less devastating to most species
22. With which of the following statements would the author be most likely to agree?
A. The extinction of a few species is an acceptable consequence of human progress.
B. Technology will provide solutions to problems caused by the destruction of ecosystems.
C. Human influence on ecosystems should not be a factor in determining public policy.
D. Humans should be more conscious of the influence they have on ecosystems.

Your answer
16. 17. 18. 19. 20. 21. 22.

Part 4. The following reading passage has five paragraphs, A-E. Read the paragraphs and choose
the correct heading for each paragraph from the list below. There are more headings than
paragraphs, so you will not use them all. Write the number of the heading in the corresponding
provided space. (1.6 points)

List of headings
i. Social impact
ii. Management decisions 23. Paragraph A: _______
iii. Flexibility of technology 24. Paragraph B: _______
iv. Wasted time on the road 25. Paragraph C: _______
v. Technology keeping us at home 26. Paragraph D: _______
vi. Benefits of all 27. Paragraph E: _______
vii. Keeping it clean
viii. Time for a change
WORKING FROM HOME
A. Can you feel your anxiety and stress levels increasing every time you get caught in a traffic jam?
Do you find it difficult to control your tongue when your boss points out your shortcomings yet again?
Do you yearn for state-of-the-art technology in your home that you haven't had to pay for? If you are
shouting an enthusiastic “Yes!” in answer to these questions, then it could be time to make a career
and life change that may not even require you to quit your job. Just suggest to your boss that you wish
Page 7 of 10
to become one of the new breeds of executives whose office is based at home.
B. Working from home is a relatively new phenomenon but is becoming an increasingly popular
option with both businesses and employees. The technology available to us means that we no longer
need to be in the same office building as our colleagues to communicate effectively with each other. E-
mail, video conferencing, mobile telephones and more, mean that we can do business just as
efficiently, regardless of our location.
C. Companies may choose to employ a proportion of their staff as home-based workers, as, of course,
a workforce set up in such a way requires far less office space and fewer parking facilities. The fixed
costs of a business can be dramatically reduced. Employees can enjoy the added benefits of freedom to
schedule the day as they choose and freedom to spend more time at home with their families.
D. We can even go so far as to say that the working-from-home phenomenon could be one of the
answers to the pollution problems which the modern world has inflicted upon itself. Fewer people
travelling to work every day equals fewer cars. Fewer cars, of course, equate to lower CO2 levels in
the atmosphere.
E. But what are the drawbacks to working at home? For many of us, work is a means of escaping our
nearest and dearest and making our own mark on the world. The relationships we have with our
colleagues are a significant part of our life - after all, full-time workers spend a third of their day in
their workplace. Some people who work from home feel that they are actually much more productive
and can get tasks done in a much shorter time than in an office environment. Others, however, may be
demotivated by the isolation and find it difficult to get down to tasks which have a more intangible
deadline.
Questions 28-30
Do the following statements agree with the information given in the Reading Passage ?
In the numbered boxes below, write
TRUE if the statement agrees with the information
FALSE if the statement contradicts the information
NOT GIVEN if there is no information on this

28. Individuals experiencing increased anxiety and stress due to traffic jams and difficulties with their
boss may benefit from working from home.
29. Home-based workers allow companies to insignificantly reduce fixed costs.
30. Working from home could be a solution to pollution problems by reducing the number of cars on
the road.

Your answer
28. 29. 30.
