In Cakkavatti sutta, Buddha uttered the duties of Cattavattae king and the causes of the shorten

and long lifespan of human beings. In the sutta, the stories of Daḷhanemi, the wheel-turning-
monarch, and other six Cakkavattae kings who ruled four quarters divided by four oceans. The
king had seven treasures. Among them, the heavenly wheel-treasure which could travel from a
place to another place without destruction receded back from its place gradually, when the king
was about to die. On the seventh day after the king’s death, it had completely disappeared from
its place. Therefore, the heavenly wheel-treasure was not the thing which can be preserved by the
next generation. It can form and disappear because of the habits and power of the wheel-turning
monarch.
There are 10 noble duties of the wheel-turning monarch. Before practicing those duties, it is
needed to celebrate hair washing ceremony on the 15 th sabbath day. The heavenly wheel-treasure
will appear after practicing the duties of the wheel-turning monarch.
Therefore, by studying about the wheel-turning-monarch uttered by Buddha in Cakkavatti sutta,
it can be known that the lifespan of the wheel-turning-monarchs were 80,000 years. At that time,
people have only three kinds of illnesses such as attachment, hunger and aging. During the reign
of the king, all the four islands were prosperous and there were plenty of foods. Under the
administration of the king who practiced Dhamma, the people could keep five precepts and they
can live for a long time pleasantly.
