(b) Radioactivity is a nuclear phenomenon. Comment on this statement. [2]

ii. The diagram shows a uniform metre rule weighing


100 gf, placed horizontally on a fulcrum at its centre O.
Two weights 150 gf and 250 gf hang from the metre rule
as shown.
Calculate the net moment about O and its direction. [2]

iii. State four factors on which loudness of a sound depends. [2]

iv. Calculate the power of an engine required to lift 1000 kg of coal per hour from a mine 360m
deep. [Take g =10ms-2 ] [2]

v. A body, when acted upon by a force of 10 kgf, gets displaced by 0.5 m. Calculate the work done by
the force, when the displacement is at angle of 60º with the force. (g=10 m/s2). [2]

vi. Establish a relation between e.m.f. and internal resistance of a cell. [2]

vii. Why do you think a fuse is a safety device and why MCB is preferred to it nowadays? [2]

(i) (a) A mercury thermometer when placed in a radiation X, shows a rapid increase in temperature.
Name the radiation X. [2]
(b) Write any one use of the radiation mentioned above in part (a).

(ii) (a) Why is it dangerous to connect a switch to the neutral wire? [2]
(b) What precautions would you observe while handling a switch?

(iii) Discuss how ac is advantageous over dc? [2]

(iv) Differentiate between single fixed pulley and single movable pulley on the basis of: [2]
(a) M.A.
(b) Convenience

(v) Snow on mountains does not melt at once. Give reason. [2]
SECTION B (40 Marks)
(Attempt any four questions)

Question 4 [3+3+4]

i. A uniform meter rod of weight 50 gf is balanced at 40cm mark, a weight of 100gf is suspended at
15 cm mark. Where must a weight of 80 gf be suspended to balance the meter rod ?

ii. A boy tunes a radio channel to a radio station 93.5 MHz.


(a) Name and define the phenomenon involved in tuning the radio channel.
(b) Now what is the frequency of the channel?

iii. An elephant (mass=5 tonne) takes tourists to a hill resort 0.4 km above the ground level. The
elephant carries 2000kg load of tourists and luggage and takes 60minutes. Calculate:
(a) the work done by an elephant
(b) potential energy gained by tourist and luggage.
(c) efficiency of the operation.
(d) power of the elephant in horse power.

Question 5 [3+3+4]

i. A man standing in front of a wall produces a sound and hears an echo after 3s. He walks ‘x’ m away
from the wall and produces the same sound. Now he hears an echo after 5.25s. Calculate the
distance he walked away from his initial position. (Speed of sound in air is 340 m/s)

ii. A pulley system having one fixed and other movable has an efficiency of 75% . Calculate:
(a) Mechanical advantage
(b) Effort required to lift a load of 1000N
(c) Resistance due to movable parts and friction of pulley system.

iii. The following diagram shows the displacement time graph for a vibrating body.
(a) Name the type of vibration produced by the vibrating body.
(b) Give one example of a body producing such vibrations.
(c) Why is the amplitude of the wave gradually decreasing?
(d) What will happen to the vibrations of the body after some time?
Question 6 [3+3+4]

i. Three bulbs A, B and C are connected in parallel across a 110V source. The bulbs have rating as bulb
A (20W, 110V), bulb B (50W, 110V) and bulb C (100W, 110V).
a. Calculate the current flowing in each bulb.
b. Which bulb will glow the brightest?

ii. An object is placed in front of a converging lens at a distance greater than twice the focal length.
Draw a ray diagram to show the formation of the image and state the nature of image.

iii. A beam of white light is incident normally on the surface AB of an equilateral prism ABC and emerges
out of it.
(a) Draw a diagram to show the path of beam till it emerges out of the prism.
(b) Mark the angles in (a) part wherever necessary.
(c) What assumptions have you made while drawing the diagram?
(d) Name the phenomenon exhibited by the light beam.

Question 7 [3+3+4]

i. A coin kept inside water of refractive index 4/3, when viewed from air in a vertical direction, appears
to be raised by 2.0mm. Find the depth of coin in water.

ii. Three 250-Watt heaters are connected in parallel to a


100-volt supply, calculate:

(a) total current taken from the supply


(b) the resistance of each heater
(c) the energy supply in kWh to the heaters in 5 hours.

iii. The diagram shows a coil connected to a galvanometer G. The galvanometer shows a deflection to
the right when the N-pole of a powerful magnet is moved to the right as shown.
(a) Explain, why the deflection occur in the galvanometer?
(b) Does the direction of the current in the coil appear clockwise or anti-clockwise, when viewed from
the end A?
(c) State the observation in G when the coil is moved away from N.
(d) State the observation in G when both the coil and the magnet are moved to the right at the same
speed.

i. What is nuclear fission? Write two fission reactions.

ii. Name the:


(a) Radiation which spectrum can be obtained by quartz prism.
(b) Waves used in echocardiogram.
(c) Radiation wavelength range is from 800nm to 106nm?

iii. A source of heat supplies heat at a constant rate to a solid cube. The variation of the temperature of
the cube with heat supplied is shown in the fig.

(a) What is represented by AB and CD?


(b) What conclusion would you draw from the fact that the slope of OA is greater than the slope of BC?

Question 9 [3+3+4]

i. A mixture of radioactive substances gives of three types of radiations:


(a) Name the radiation similar in nature to cathode rays.
(b) Name the radiation which is deviated most in a magnetic field.
(c) Name the radiation which has the maximum penetrating power.

ii. How much energy is released when 5 gram of water at 20°C changes to ice at 0°C? [Specific heat
capacity of water = 4.2 J g-1 K-1 ; Specific latent heat of ice = 336 J/g ]

iii. The diagram below shows a core of transformer and its Input/output connection:

(a) State the material used for the core and describe its structure.
(b) Use the given data in the diagram to calculate the turn ratio for the transformer.
(c) Complete the diagram of the transformer and connections by labeling all the parts added by you.
(d) If a current of 2A is taken from the output, calculate the current in the input circuit. (Assume
transformer is ideal)
