Lesson 5.3: Real Life Problem Applications
Lesson Summary
In this lesson, we will apply the concept of the functions and graphs in reallife
situations. This includes the plotting of the collected data, determining the
path of a projectile, finding the distance between objects, and others.
Learning Outcomes
At the end of the lesson, the students should be able to apply the functions
and graphs in solving real-life situations.
Motivation Question
What are the things to know when applying functions and graphs in our
everyday lives?
Discussion
Sketching the Scatter plot
‘One of the applications of graphs is to sketch a scatter plot from the collected
data. It is done by plotting the collected quantitative data in a graph,
connecting the points to form a curve, and performs statistical analysis to
interpret the data. Though, we will not go further to data analysis. Since it is a
real-life data, no negative numbers involved, thus the xy-plane is composed
of only positive x and y-values. The exception of that is the temperature and
other physics-related problems. Anyway, we will not focus much on the
applications in physics.
Example 1. Sketching scatter plot
1. The table shown is the annual expense (in million dollars) spent on skiing
equipment in the United States from 1990 to 2003, Create a scatter plot for

Solution:
Let the year (t) and amount (A) be the independent and dependent
variables, respectively. Thus, you can simply represent each pair of
values as an ordered pair (t, A), plotting them as shown below.

Note: The final solution to this must have a line that connects
the points forming a curve

Writing a Piecewise function
In a certain case, there are times that we create a certain condition to achieve
a certain goal. For example, on the price of a certain product based on their
quantity wherein, a discounted price is given for those who brought them at a
bulk quantity. Another example is the Public Utility Vehicle (PUV) fares in
which a certain amount of fare for the first five kilometers, then an additional
amount for every kilometer after five kilometers.
This is an example of the application of the piecewise function that has two or
more different formulas per set of the domain
Example 2. Application of a Piecewise Function
1. Museum Tour. A museum charges a 5 dollars fee for a guided tour with a
group of 1 to 9 persons and a fixed 50 dollars fee for a group with 10 or more
Persons. Write a function relating the number of persons (n) to the tour fee (F).
Solution: Let F(n) be the function based on the number of people (n). There
are two different formulas mentioned in the problem. That is, in a group of
fewer than 10, F = 50n, and for a group of 10 or more, F = 500. Hence,

This is how this function looked like in the graph. You will notice that the first
formula is linear (purple line) while the second one is in constant (red line)
which is 50.
