1. A genetically modified food is made with a genetically modified organism (GMO) or living
thing. A GMO is an animal, plant, or microorganism. To genetically modify an animal, plant, or
microorganism, scientists use the genetic engineering process, which is also called modern
biotechnology, gene technology, or recombinant DNA technology.

Potato:

Some GMO potatoes were developed to resist insect pests and disease. In addition, some GMO
potato varieties have been developed to resist bruising and browning that can occur when
potatoes are packaged, stored, and transported, or even cut in your kitchen. While browning does
not change the quality of the potato, it often leads to food being unnecessarily thrown away
because people mistakenly believe browned food is spoiled.

Pink pineapple

Pink pineapple has been modified to produce lower levels of the enzymes that convert lycopene
to beta carotene, allowing the fruit to become naturally pink. Lycopene is the same pigment that
makes tomatoes red and watermelons pink, so it is commonly found in many fruits and vegetables
and totally safe to eat.
Salmon

Created so that it continuously produces growth hormones and can be sold as a full size fish after
18 months instead of 3 years

Mosquitoes

British company Oxitec has created genetically modified male mosquitoes that carry a “self-
limiting gene”. When they are released into the wild and mate with females their offspring do not
reach adulthood, so crucially do not contribute to the spread of the Zika virus. Other researchers
are looking at using genetic modification to curb the spread of malaria.

After genetically modified foods were introduced in the United States a few decades ago, people
independently reported toxic effects caused by GMOs. One example is an anti-GMO advocacy
group called the Institute for Responsible Technology (IRT), which reported that rats fed a diet
containing a GMO potato had virtually every organ system adversely affected after just ten days of
feeding. The IRT stated that the toxicity was the result of genetic modification techniques and not
a specific case for that particular potato. They claimed the process of making the GMO caused it
to be toxic and thus all GMOs were high risk for toxicity.

Scientists across the U.S. and the rest of the world have sought to rigorously test the assertions
of the IRT and others to uncover any possible toxicity caused by GMOs. To this end, many different
types of modifications in various crops have been tested, and the studies have found no evidence
that GMOs cause organ toxicity or other adverse health effects.

Examples of products from GM organism are cornstarch, corn syrup, corn oil and soybean oil.
