CHAPTER 1
THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

Introduction

The internet has been influencing people’s lives for a couple of decades now. It

makes socialization easier, and it makes the gap between people closer. As time

passed, the internet became accessible while onboard a vessel. As it influences people

on land, it also affects the life of seafarers while onboard a vessel.

The use of the internet by Filipino seafarers while on board a vessel for a few

years influences their life. The internet was used broadly around the globe and was able

to serve as a platform for communication. Since seafarers are often separated from

their families, giving them free internet access would greatly promote their self-esteem,

interaction, well-being, and career progression while onboarding a vessel. While much

has been written about the effects of the internet on the life of seafarers, the way in

which it influences the lives of those who work on ships has never been studied in the

unique setting of a vessel, where the lines between work and personal life tend to blur.

This research aims to analyze the influence of the use of the internet on the

everyday life of Filipino seafarers onboard. How it affects the morale, motivation, and

perspective of Filipino seafarers are the objectives of this study. The researchers looked

at the current theories and previous research and studies to determine how online

connectivity impacts and influences sailors at sea. Finally, the researchers will offer

suggestions on using the internet to boost the morale of Filipino seafarers.

2
Background of the Study

There is no denying that being a seafarer is a challenging line of work. As stated

by Raunek (2016), when seafarers are apart from their families, they are compelled to

deal with repetitive routines, restricted social engagement, and diverse work practices,

all of which contribute to various stressors. The duration of the job of Filipino seafarers

is stipulated in their contract, commonly varying from 6 months up to a year, and they

work between 8 to 12 hours daily every week. They have to endure lengthy, lonely trips

away from home under a diverse range of work conditions. Apart from this, a seafarer's

life onboard is filled with danger from both natural and human causes, including bad

weather, mishaps, and other incidents. Typically, seafarers have difficulty getting shore

leave, and now, with the restrictions present due to events like the pandemic, the

situation is becoming increasingly more complicated. This indicates that seafarers have

no way to relax or alleviate work demands on the ships.

As specified by Shahibi and Rusli (2017), today's intelligent and

competent societies rely heavily on the internet, which is a system of networks of

computers, for a wide variety of data tasks, including but not limited to: the gathering of

information, communicating, scientific studies, and education. When it first appeared in

the 1990s, the internet was widely hailed for its advanced features. The Internet was

originally designed as a means of interaction, but it has now stretched its use to include

socializing, learning, doing commerce, and much more.

In accordance with Oldenburg and Jensen (2019), good communication with their

families back home is vital to offset the stress caused by the work that seafarers endure

on board merchant vessels. In order to have that, there must be a stable internet for

3
them to access. Being able to interact with family and friends back home is made much

easier with internet access onboard, hence reducing the feeling of isolation when away

from home. It improves the quality of life on board and increases the allure of seafaring

(Dickinson, 2021). Moreover, as reported by the International Journal of Environmental

Research and Public Health (2020), excessive working hours and separation from loved

ones have been linked to reduced social interactions and increased feelings of isolation

among seafarers while on board.

Everyone can benefit in many ways from using technologies, which include the

internet. It contains the advantages that may be obtained by seafarers onboard a vessel

throughout their contract as a medium of communication and as an aid to their work and

wellbeing while at sea.

Statement of the Problem

This study aims to determine the influences of the use of the internet on the

everyday life of the Filipino seafarers onboard. It will specifically seek answers to the

following questions:

1. What is the demographic profile of the participants in area of:

1.1 Age

1.2 Gender

1.3 Type of shipping company

2. What is the influence of the use of the internet on the respondents in terms of their

personal life?

2.1 Communication with their family

2.2 Communication among their friends onboard

2.3 Updates and entertainment

3. How does the internet influence the respondents’ work onboard on a daily basis?

6
Scope and Limitation of the Study

This study focuses only on the responses perceived by Filipino seafarers based

on their observations and experiences regarding the influences of the internet on their

everyday lives on board a vessel. The researchers will interview twelve (12) selected

respondents with sea-going backgrounds on ships that have connections onboard. The

questions that the researchers will develop will be based on the specific queries based

on the statement of the problem. The researchers limited this assessment to the overall

experience of the selected seafarers and do not desire to include solutions for the

operation of the maritime companies. Other areas not mentioned shall not be included

in the scope of the study and may be a subject of concern for future studies that may be

conducted on the same topic.

Significance of the Study

The results of this study will give contribution and advantages explicitly to the

following:

Seafarers. This research will provide awareness to seafarers on how the internet

affects their life onboard a vessel. This study will also act as information for seafarers to

determine whether their daily internet use is similar to that of other seafarers.

Maritime Students. This study will be advantageous for maritime students as their

guide in choosing shipping companies that provide or do not provide internet connection

onboard in the future. This study will also serve as another source of knowledge for

maritime students to understand the influence of using the internet on daily life while at

sea.

7
Shipping Companies. This research will give the shipping companies ideas about the

importance of having internet access while onboard. Also, it may serve as the

informational basis for the development of shipping companies.

Future Researchers. With the existence of this study, future researchers can use this

as a reference for their future studies. Moreover, this study will be significant for

researchers who intend to address a similar issue, such as identifying the positive and

negative influences of using the internet onboard a vessel.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES

This chapter presents a review of related studies and literature after a thorough

search done by the researchers. Those that were included in this chapter provide clarity

and help familiarize information that are relevant to the present study.

Related Studies

Foreign Studies

Communication is crucial in every setting, especially onboard a vessel, since it

has the capability to build, connect, or divide a group in response to its surroundings.

When there is open and enjoyable communication amongst coworkers, everyone is

more motivated to do their best, enhancing the group's output. On the contrary, if

communication fails, it may lead to tense interpersonal relationships, disengagement,

and even continuous strife. Employee productivity is significantly impacted by effective

communication. Informing workers of their specific tasks can keep them encouraged,

along with their progress toward accomplishing those tasks and what could be changed

to enhance their effectiveness if it falls short (Pasyah et al., 2020).

According to Shea (2005), in the study of Smith (2016), there are a lot of

difficulties to overcome socially when you are a seafarer. It's not enough for crew

members to just work together; they also have to share a social space with their

coworkers after work.

By the data of Oldenburg and Jensen (2019), On average, crewmembers of a

vessel use 32.6% of their day sleeping, while 28.2% was for non-work-related activities.

10
When compared to those working in the engine room and the navigation bridge, deck

ratings have been shown to have a much greater energy use. Since seafarers spend

months onboard ships and seldom get to go ashore, it is reasonable to hold companies

responsible for ensuring their employees have enough and varied ways to spend their

free time. As a result of space limitations, onboard entertainment options are generally

restricted. The availability of physical activity options outside of the workplace is

minimal. Yet, larger commercial ships often have workout centers with cardio equipment

like treadmills and others.

Khan et al. (2010), as cited in Zamora et al. (2021), state that communication has

become easier to obtain with the internet and social media development. The term

"social media" has come to embrace a wide range of online and mobile platforms where

users can communicate and collaborate in creating and disseminating information. In

addition to social media sites like Twitter and Facebook, it encompasses any textual

information on the web, such as news and journals. The emotional health of seafarers is

a critical consideration for any policy that may impact their daily life on the sea. Thus, it

is crucial to know how their usage and utilization of social media affect psychological

health. In addition, research has shown that those with depression and anxiety are more

likely to utilize social media. Due to the two-way nature of the consequences, the

connection between social media usage and emotional distress is complicated (Maras

et al., 2015).

Local Studies

11
It is possible that working on the sea is one of the most stressful professions and

requires much effort because of the nature of the work. This is due to the fact that

mariners must adapt to changing environmental factors while at sea. A seafarer's life

onboard is filled with danger from both natural and human causes, including bad

weather, mishaps, and other incidents. Their anxiety and consequent poor performance

are a direct result of these factors (Barranta, 2012).

As stated by Garinga et al. (2018), one of the things aiding OFWs today is

technological advancement. They find that using Facebook's many stress-relieving

features is beneficial for reducing their overall level of stress. Facebook allows seafarers

to stay in touch with their loved ones back home while away at sea. And despite being

physically apart, they continue to keep in touch with their families through the said

platform.

Related Literature

Foreign Literature

According to Polit (2014), most seafarers accept the offered jobs whenever they

have been given to them. One man recounted a year in which he returned to his family

after serving at sea for nine months, only to be called back out again eighteen days

later. That one man thought he had no choice but to leave his tearful wife at the shore.

He would likely never work again if he turned down the contract. Seafarers frequently

only have some hours onshore, which gives them the reason to rush to the stores to

stock up on food, clothing, and electronics that are either unavailable or too expensive

12
back at sea. Ship Technology Global (2015) identifies communication as being one of

the major challenges, as seafarers are often of various nationalities. Even though

English is the dominant language on board, everyone's English proficiency will vary.

Navigators face challenges when attempting risk-free tasks, but they find solutions.

Based on the findings from a poll by the International Chamber of Shipping (ICS)

and the European Community Shipowners' Associations (ECSA) in 2019, 60% of those

who took the survey said that giving crew members an internet connection for personal

use positively impacted their mental health, and 69% of it said it boosted the

crewmembers' morale onboard. As Mark Dickinson of Nautilus International (2021)

stated, "Having internet connectivity onboard greatly improves the ability to

communicate with loved ones back home, thus mitigating the loneliness of being away

from home. It makes seafaring more bearable and potentially attractive." In addition,

increased connectedness has a critical role in boosting employee morale and

enhancing work satisfaction, which, in turn, improves the employees' capacity to contact

their significant others back home and, as a result, lessens the intensity of feelings

associated with isolation (Nautilus International, n.d.).

Furthermore, Herwadkar (2019) stated that internet onboard has advantages and

disadvantages. The benefits of using the internet onboard are using Chat clients like

Whatsapp, Yahoo, GTalk, and Messenger; sailors can stay in touch with loved ones

back home while at sea thanks to the ship's internet connection. Regular use of social

media platforms like Facebook and Twitter can help seafarers feel less isolated from the

rest of the world. The availability of the internet onboard has also enabled the uploading

and downloading of electronic guides and user manuals. It is meant to be used by

13
seafarers on board to navigate the machinery easily. The internet also gives seafarers

the capability to utilize online applications with a connection to their education and

finance. As the world becomes increasingly digital, more and more financial and

educational services are becoming available exclusively online and having internet

access while at sea simplifies this process for sailors, who would typically have to wait

until they return home.

As stated by Herwadkar (2019), the disadvantages of the internet onboard are:

(1) The internet is a source of distraction. Many sailors have been diverted from their

duties by personal messages from home; (2) Addiction to social media. It means

seafarers may have nothing to do when they're not working. It's just as easy to develop

an addiction to social media sites like Facebook and Twitter while at sea as on land. It

messed up the sleeping schedules of seafarers. Having unrestricted access to the

internet at all hours of the day and night makes it more likely that some people will

abuse the privilege.

On the other hand, the survey by ICS and ECSA showed that the positive

advantages connected with having internet access outweigh the expected safety issues

involving it. It is because 85% of these companies who participated in the survey

indicated that seafarers' ability to relax and sleep at allotted rest hours had not been

hindered by internet access. Some even found that it had improved. Also, 96% of the

organizations said that the crewmembers' performance at work did not worsen even if

they had internet access despite all the worries of it affecting their job.

Communication is crucial in every setting, especially onboard a vessel, since it

has the capability to build, connect, or divide a group in response to its surroundings.

14
When there is open and enjoyable communication amongst coworkers, everyone is

more motivated to do their best, enhancing the group's output. On the contrary, if

communication fails, it may lead to tense interpersonal relationships, disengagement,

and even continuous strife. Employee productivity is significantly impacted by effective

communication. Informing workers of their specific tasks can keep them encouraged,

along with their progress toward accomplishing those tasks and what could be changed

to enhance their effectiveness if it falls short (Pasyah et al., 2020).

According to The Maritime Executive (2018), keeping in touch with loved ones

has always been a vital part of a Filipino seafarer's job. Despite technological

advancements, this hasn't changed much since the days of sai. Claims that this

connection is more important than ever to the well-being of Filipino Seafarers, as seen

by their "stark divide" latest survey, between those who work on ships with internet

access and those who do without. They also stated that loneliness and sadness are

already common among Filipino Seafarers, but they can be made worse by a lack of

contact with loved ones.

Local Literature

As Sampson (2017) stated in an interview with Rappler, everything is so dull

when you're on a ship. It's pleasant to speak with loved ones back home when there are

exciting stories to tell about your time on board. It is crucial to ensure the mental well-

being of seafarers in order to cut down on maritime accidents. The percentage of

accidents related to human error has increased over time. The lives of the crew

members and those around them are dependent on their sound judgment, as many

15
incidents can go wrong onboard. Now more than ever, companies have established

several policies regulating the conduct expected of their crew. But they may not make

the best decisions if they are restless, worried, or emotionally unsteady.

16
CHAPTER 3

METHODOLOGY

This research chapter presents the strategy and the design of the research to be

used for the entire study. This chapter is divided into research design, population,

samples, sampling technique, research instrument, data gathering procedure, and data

analysis.

Research Design

In this study, the researchers will use a phenomenological-qualitative research

design as it provides an organizational framework for studying actual life experiences.

Alhazmi and Kaufmann (2022) stated that it would give the researchers a wide range of

options for describing and gaining insight into complicated phenomena, including the

experiences of the seafarers when it comes to the influences of the internet onboard

their vessels.

Moreover, this approach will aid the researchers in discovering how the internet

affects the everyday lives of experienced seafarers, which will be applicable to the study

as phenomenology offers a unique opportunity to gain insight through the experiences

of others (Neubauer et al., 2019).

17
Population, Samples, and Sampling Techniques

In this study, the researchers will use purposive sampling to choose the

participants. It is a technique that selects respondents based on certain qualities

needed that will give the most valuable data for the study's objectives in accordance

with Nikolopoulou (2022). The researchers will then have the research population for

this study that will comprise twelve (12) selected respondents with sea-going

experiences on vessels that have internet connection onboard.

Research Instrument

In this study, the researchers will develop a collection of semi-structured

interview guide questions as the instrument to collect information in line with the

problem statement. The researchers will present a validation letter to the designated

research adviser and maritime research experts for the approval and validation of the

interview guide questions prior to the distribution.

In the first part, the questions detail the demographic profile of the respondents,

which includes their age, gender, and type of shipping company. The second will

consist of questions with regards to the influence of internet use in terms of the

respondents’ communication with their family, their friends onboard, and updates and

entertainment. And the third part will focus on the influence of the internet on the

respondents’ work onboard on a daily basis.

18
Data Gathering Procedure

The researchers will use semi-structured interview guide questions that are

based on the statement of the problem and objectives of the study. In order to gather

data, the researchers will first seek permission from this study's respondents, which are

Filipino seafarers who have observations and experiences regarding the influences of

the internet on their everyday lives on board a vessel, by sending them a letter

requesting permission to interview them at their convenient time. After the respondents

have provided their consent, the researchers will carry out the interview based on the

time the participants and the researchers agreed upon. Third, in light of the possible

limitations posed by traveling and in-person attendance at meetings, the data collection

will be done by online communication tools, including Messenger and Google Meet. The

researchers will record the interview to ensure the integrity of the data as well as for use

in data transcription by the researchers. Then, in accordance with their privacy rights,

the researchers will ensure interview participants that their responses will remain

confidential after carrying out the interview. Lastly, all the data gathered will undergo

data analysis.

Data Analysis

The researchers will use thematic analysis when analyzing the responses of the

participants’ interview answers. The researchers are in favor of this method because it

places priority on the respondent's prior knowledge, experience, and judgment in an

19
intuitive way which is why phenomenological research design is the most applicable

way to analyze the data. Aside from that, according to Kiger and Varpio (2020), by

highlighting the cultural, social, and systemic contexts that shape individual

experiences, thematic analysis fosters the formation of information that is formed

through contacts between the researchers and the respondents, thereby illuminating the

meanings that are socially defined.
