CHAPTER 1
THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND
Introduction
The internet has been influencing people’s lives for a couple of decades now. It
makes socialization easier, and it makes the gap between people closer. As time
passed, the internet became accessible while onboard a vessel. As it influences people
The use of the internet by Filipino seafarers while on board a vessel for a few
years influences their life. The internet was used broadly around the globe and was able
to serve as a platform for communication. Since seafarers are often separated from
their families, giving them free internet access would greatly promote their self-esteem,
interaction, well-being, and career progression while onboarding a vessel. While much
has been written about the effects of the internet on the life of seafarers, the way in
which it influences the lives of those who work on ships has never been studied in the
unique setting of a vessel, where the lines between work and personal life tend to blur.
This research aims to analyze the influence of the use of the internet on the
everyday life of Filipino seafarers onboard. How it affects the morale, motivation, and
perspective of Filipino seafarers are the objectives of this study. The researchers looked
at the current theories and previous research and studies to determine how online
connectivity impacts and influences sailors at sea. Finally, the researchers will offer

by Raunek (2016), when seafarers are apart from their families, they are compelled to
deal with repetitive routines, restricted social engagement, and diverse work practices,
all of which contribute to various stressors. The duration of the job of Filipino seafarers
is stipulated in their contract, commonly varying from 6 months up to a year, and they
work between 8 to 12 hours daily every week. They have to endure lengthy, lonely trips
away from home under a diverse range of work conditions. Apart from this, a seafarer's
life onboard is filled with danger from both natural and human causes, including bad
weather, mishaps, and other incidents. Typically, seafarers have difficulty getting shore
leave, and now, with the restrictions present due to events like the pandemic, the
situation is becoming increasingly more complicated. This indicates that seafarers have

easier with internet access onboard, hence reducing the feeling of isolation when away

Scope and Limitation of the Study
This study focuses only on the responses perceived by Filipino seafarers based
on their observations and experiences regarding the influences of the internet on their
everyday lives on board a vessel. The researchers will interview twelve (12) selected
respondents with sea-going backgrounds on ships that have connections onboard. The
questions that the researchers will develop will be based on the specific queries based
on the statement of the problem. The researchers limited this assessment to the overall
experience of the selected seafarers and do not desire to include solutions for the
operation of the maritime companies. Other areas not mentioned shall not be included
in the scope of the study and may be a subject of concern for future studies that may be

following:
Seafarers. This research will provide awareness to seafarers on how the internet
affects their life onboard a vessel. This study will also act as information for seafarers to
determine whether their daily internet use is similar to that of other seafarers.
Maritime Students. This study will be advantageous for maritime students as their
guide in choosing shipping companies that provide or do not provide internet connection
onboard in the future. This study will also serve as another source of knowledge for
maritime students to understand the influence of using the internet on daily life while at
sea.

According to Shea (2005), in the study of Smith (2016), there are a lot of
difficulties to overcome socially when you are a seafarer. It's not enough for crew
members to just work together; they also have to share a social space with their
vessel use 32.6% of their day sleeping, while 28.2% was for non-work-related activities.

When compared to those working in the engine room and the navigation bridge, deck
ratings have been shown to have a much greater energy use. Since seafarers spend
months onboard ships and seldom get to go ashore, it is reasonable to hold companies
responsible for ensuring their employees have enough and varied ways to spend their
free time. As a result of space limitations, onboard entertainment options are generally
minimal. Yet, larger commercial ships often have workout centers with cardio equipment
Khan et al. (2010), as cited in Zamora et al. (2021), state that communication has
become easier to obtain with the internet and social media development. The term
"social media" has come to embrace a wide range of online and mobile platforms where
addition to social media sites like Twitter and Facebook, it encompasses any textual
information on the web, such as news and journals. The emotional health of seafarers is
a critical consideration for any policy that may impact their daily life on the sea. Thus, it
is crucial to know how their usage and utilization of social media affect psychological
health. In addition, research has shown that those with depression and anxiety are more
likely to utilize social media. Due to the two-way nature of the consequences, the
connection between social media usage and emotional distress is complicated (Maras
et al., 2015).

It is possible that working on the sea is one of the most stressful professions and
requires much effort because of the nature of the work. This is due to the fact that
mariners must adapt to changing environmental factors while at sea. A seafarer's life
onboard is filled with danger from both natural and human causes, including bad
weather, mishaps, and other incidents. Their anxiety and consequent poor performance

to stay in touch with their loved ones back home while away at sea. And despite being
physically apart, they continue to keep in touch with their families through the said
platform.

According to Polit (2014), most seafarers accept the offered jobs whenever they
have been given to them. One man recounted a year in which he returned to his family
after serving at sea for nine months, only to be called back out again eighteen days
later. That one man thought he had no choice but to leave his tearful wife at the shore.

the major challenges, as seafarers are often of various nationalities. Even though
English is the dominant language on board, everyone's English proficiency will vary.
Navigators face challenges when attempting risk-free tasks, but they find solutions.
Based on the findings from a poll by the International Chamber of Shipping (ICS)
and the European Community Shipowners' Associations (ECSA) in 2019, 60% of those
who took the survey said that giving crew members an internet connection for personal

the capability to utilize online applications with a connection to their education and

educational services are becoming available exclusively online and having internet

On the other hand, the survey by ICS and ECSA showed that the positive
advantages connected with having internet access outweigh the expected safety issues

METHODOLOGY
This research chapter presents the strategy and the design of the research to be
used for the entire study. This chapter is divided into research design, population,
samples, sampling technique, research instrument, data gathering procedure, and data
analysis.
Research Design
Alhazmi and Kaufmann (2022) stated that it would give the researchers a wide range of
options for describing and gaining insight into complicated phenomena, including the
experiences of the seafarers when it comes to the influences of the internet onboard
their vessels.
Moreover, this approach will aid the researchers in discovering how the internet
affects the everyday lives of experienced seafarers, which will be applicable to the study
17
Population, Samples, and Sampling Techniques
In this study, the researchers will use purposive sampling to choose the
needed that will give the most valuable data for the study's objectives in accordance
with Nikolopoulou (2022). The researchers will then have the research population for
this study that will comprise twelve (12) selected respondents with sea-going

which includes their age, gender, and type of shipping company. The second will
consist of questions with regards to the influence of internet use in terms of the
respondents’ communication with their family, their friends onboard, and updates and
entertainment. And the third part will focus on the influence of the internet on the

Data Gathering Procedure
The researchers will use semi-structured interview guide questions that are
based on the statement of the problem and objectives of the study. In order to gather
data, the researchers will first seek permission from this study's respondents, which are
Filipino seafarers who have observations and experiences regarding the influences of
the internet on their everyday lives on board a vessel, by sending them a letter
requesting permission to interview them at their convenient time. After the respondents
have provided their consent, the researchers will carry out the interview based on the
time the participants and the researchers agreed upon. Third, in light of the possible
limitations posed by traveling and in-person attendance at meetings, the data collection
will be done by online communication tools, including Messenger and Google Meet. The
researchers will record the interview to ensure the integrity of the data as well as for use
in data transcription by the researchers. Then, in accordance with their privacy rights,
the researchers will ensure interview participants that their responses will remain
confidential after carrying out the interview. Lastly, all the data gathered will undergo
data analysis.
Data Analysis
The researchers will use thematic analysis when analyzing the responses of the
participants’ interview answers. The researchers are in favor of this method because it

way to analyze the data. Aside from that, according to Kiger and Varpio (2020), by
highlighting the cultural, social, and systemic contexts that shape individual
