HOME OF THE PROFESSIONALS

INTRODUCTION

In civilian life you have often gone wild animals

hunting. Remember the times you pick up a rock or a
stick and threw it into a clump of bushes to scare the
animals and get out from his hiding place so you could
get a nice shot at him in the open or rather you may
have thrown rocks at a stray cat to knock him out of a
tree or roof where your bird house, was located.

HOME OF THE PROFESSIONALS

There are many times in civilian life when you used
rocks, particularly as a weapon of self defense. There
will be times in the Army when you will need a weapon
you can throw. In that way, this weapon is no different
from a rock. And it will be your throwing weapon in the
Army.

HOME OF THE PROFESSIONALS

It is an added weapon to your rifle and bayonet. It is
a weapon of the rifle squad. On the defense you can use
this against an approaching enemy. On the defense you
can use it for getting rid of the enemy pillboxes,
knocking out gun positions and for close fighting
anywhere. It is a must to teach and every soldier to
know how to use and how to throw this type of weapon.

The word GRENADES is derived from the Latin word
GRANATUS. The term was first applied to grenades by
the Spanish during the 16th century. The Spanish called
their grenades GRANADA meaning pomegranate
because of the resemblance of the early Spanish
grenade to that fruit

Published reports concerning the tactical use of
grenades were first written in Western Europe during the
crusades. The grenades mentioned in such reports were
made of glass globes, jars, kegs and pots. They were
used primarily for incendiary effects rather than the
fragmentation effect of most modern hand grenade.

During the RUSSO-JAPANESE War of 1904 and
1905, grenades were used for The first times on a
massive scale in both offensive and defensive
operations. The grenades employed by the Japanese
were the first featuring a delay time fuze

Definition

GRENADE – is a small offensive or defensive ordnance

item originally design to be thrown by hand, but now
also designed to be projected from rifle, special
launcher and other dispensing munitions.

HOME OF THE PROFESSIONALS

- is a small bomb filled with HE or chemical designed
to be thrown by an individual soldier with a maximum
range of 40 meters and 160 meters by means of a rifle
projection adapter and wherein a pull of 10-15 lbs is
needed to withdraw the safety pin.

Characteristics

1. Short range weapon and range depends on the

throwing capability of individual soldier.Small effective
casualty radius.Incorporate a delay element to permit
safe throwing.

Classification of Grenades

1. As to method of projection
a. Hand Grenade – projection is by hand
throwing.
b. Rifle Grenade – projection thru rifle using
special grenades cartridges.
c. Special – fixed from special launcher designed
specially for the tank.

1.) Fragmentation – 40mm for M203/M79.

2.) HEAT-RFG-Russian-Rifle propelled Grenade.

d. Dispensed-eject from a projectile or other
dispenser.
1.) 105mm
2.) 155mm
2. According to use.

a. Service
1.) Fragmentation
2.) Offensive
3.) Chemical
4.) Illuminating
b. Practice
c. Training

3. According to filler

a. High explosive
b. Chemical
c. Illuminating
d. Inert
e. Spotting Charge

HOME OF THE PROFESSIONALS

Type of hand Grenades
1. Fragmentation – these grenades are used to produce
casualties by high velocity projection of fragmentation

2. Offensive – are used for blast effect.

3. Illuminating – used to provide illumination of terrain
and targets
4. Chemicals – used for riot control, incendiary, smoke
(screening, signaling) practice and incapacitating
purposes.
5. Practice/Training – used for training personnel is use
care and handling of service grenades.

Three Main Parts of Grenade

1. Body – is a container which holds the filler and

may be made of metal, glass, paper or any other
suitable substances.
2. Filler – is the substance with which the grenade
is filled. It may be TNT or any other type HE, chemicals
or inert materials.

3. Fuze – sets of the explosive. It contains a device
that automaticallyset fire a string powder similar to a fire
cracker fuze. This string of powderis enclosed in a
tube. It is made so that it will burn at a controlled rate.
The burning is called the “delay of the fuze”.

HOME OF THE PROFESSIONALS

Types of Fuzes
1. Striker Release – when the safety pin is pulled and
the safety lever is released the striker will hit the primer
as the spring function.
2. Reverse Action (striker release) – the safety
lever is in reverse position.
3. Pull Friction – by pulling out the cord, ignition
produced inside the fuze.4. All-Acting – in any part
of the grenade will serve as fuze upon impact.
5. Impact Electric (striker release) – will produce
electric impulse upon impact.

HOME OF THE PROFESSIONALS

How Grenade Function?

Removal of the safety pin permits release of the

safety lever. When the lever is released, it is forced
away from the grenades body by a striker acting under
the force of the striker spring. The striker rotates on its
axis and strikes the percussion primer. The detonator
explodes thus initiating the explosive charge. The
explosive charge explodes, rupturing the body and
projecting high velocity fragments.
