Form 2706 Rev 12-2016 - KPC Klein Protective Coating - Red Oxide - English
Form 2706 Rev 12-2016 - KPC Klein Protective Coating - Red Oxide - English
ABOUT:
Klein Protective Coating (KPC), Part Number 47074669, is a solvent–free and humidity tolerant two-pack
modified epoxy. It can be applied without dew point restrictions and over damp steel surfaces. KPC shows
good chemical and abrasion resistance and good edge-retentive properties. It can be applied over steel
prepared by clean water washing, hydroblasting, grit blasting or mechanical tooling.
This product will increase the amount of steel protection on the inside of Klein water discharge tank systems
compared to tanks without coating. It can be applied over new or old steel as long as the steel is free of dirt,
scale, slag, grease, oil or any other “loose” material. On new and old metal it adds protection against
damaging rust and corrosion for virtually all metal surfaces. KPC can be used for both immersion and above
the waterline service.
FEATURES:
Excellent edge retention.
No Dew Point or relative humidity restrictions.
Excellent anticorrosive properties.
Can be applied over damp substrates.
Can be applied over medium flash rust.
Excellent substrate and intercoat adhesion.
MAINTENANCE:
Klein Protective Coating will not last forever, as soon as it is applied it starts to age and wear. Lack of use of
tank does not affect longevity on KPC. Regular maintenance is mandatory to ensure satisfactory performance.
Like other tank interior coatings, KPC does not make the tank interior “sanitary” or guarantee against rust
formation. In order for KPC to provide any degree of effective resistance to rust or the spreading of rust, it
needs to be maintained on a regular basis. Maintenance would consist of inspecting at least once a month,
recoating thin areas, bare areas or general problem areas. There is NO time table on expected life. Water,
humidity, use, lack of use, ambient temperature and quality of water are all some of the variables that affect
the longevity of this type of coating. This product will not provide a satisfactory level of performance if not
maintained on a regular basis. Klein recommends inspecting tank coating on a monthly basis or at normally
scheduled equipment service intervals.
All products should be used with extreme care. Before handling or application of a product refer to the
product manufacturer’s (MSDS) Material Safety Data Sheet.

SURFACE PREPARATION:
Surface must be clean, dry, and in sound condition. ANY water or moisture will ruin the application. Remove
all oil, dust, grease, dirt, loose rust, and other foreign material to ensure adequate adhesion.
- If possible, remove all loose coatings by hand using a steel putty knife or
comparable tool.
- Once all loose coating is removed by hand, abrade the target area and 6 inches
surrounding the area with 60 grit sandpaper. (For bare substrates clean metal
surface to remove all oil, grease, and dirt then abrade surface).
- Once surface(s) are abraded, thoroughly clean to remove ALL loose particles.
- Clean loose particles from existing coating and any bare substrates using R7K111 paint thinner.
CAUTION: Klein Protective Coating will not mix with all thinners and may contaminate prepped
surface. DO NOT substitute R7K111 paint thinner with other thinners. Contact your Klein
Products sales or technical representative for help purchasing this or satisfactory cleaner.
APPLICATION PROCEDURES:
Surface must be clean, dry, and in sound condition. ANY existing moisture or introduced moisture
during repair will prevent successful repair.
- Follow all mixing and application procedures below for successful repair. IMPORTANT:
Before mixing Part A & B please note that once mixed there is a very limited amount of
time for application of product. DO NOT mix more than is necessary for application if
multiple areas are needed for repair.
- Agitate components A and B thoroughly and independently with a hand mix to achieve
homogeneous mixture of both parts.
- Combine pre-measured, premixed components A and B using a (4:1 mix ratio). Four parts A
one part B, using supplied measuring cup provided in repair kit. This measuring cup will
identify fill levels for Part A and B for proper mix ratio. CAUTION: It is important to properly
mix ratio. Any mix ratios outside of (4:1) will result in repair failure. Hand mix or with low
speed power agitation immediately for one to five minutes to obtain homogeneous color and
CLEAN UP INSTRUCTIONS:
Clean spills and spatters immediately with R6K10 (MEK) or R7K104. Clean tools immediately after use with
R6K10 (MEK) or R7K104. After cleaning, flush spray equipment with R6K10 (MEK) or R7K104 to prevent rusting
of the equipment. Follow manufacturer's safety recommendations when using R6K10 (MEK) or R7K104.
SAFETY PRECAUTIONS:
Refer to the MSDS sheet before handling and application of this product. Check and follow ALL local and
governmental safety guidelines before use.
Published technical data and instructions are subject to change without notice. Contact your Klein
representative for additional technical data and instructions.
