Learning Activity Sheet # 5.2

RIGHT TRIANGLE SIMILARITY THEOREMS

Name of Learner: ________________________________ Score: ___________

Learning Area: MATHEMATICS 9 Section: ____________ Date: ___________

INTRODUCTION
Are you wondering how you can able to measure tall heights and far distances
without directly measuring them? In order to do that, you need to be familiar with
concept of similar right triangles and be able to prove if two right triangles are
similar? Have fun in taking the challenges and be a certified Mathlete!

LEARNING COMPETENCY
After going through this learning activity sheet, you are expected to:

 Prove the conditions for similarity of triangles involving right triangle similarity
theorems and special right triangle similarity theorems. (M9GE-III-h-1)

LEARNING ACTIVITIES
Before taking the challenge, be prepared by familiarizing first the concept of
similar right triangles under different conditions.

Right Triangle Similarity Theorem (RTST)

If the altitude is drawn to the hypotenuse of a right triangle, then the two
triangles formed are similar to the original triangle and to each other.

Separating the new right triangles formed from

the original triangle

When the altitude is drawn to the hypotenuse of Smaller Triangle to Bigger Triangle
a right triangle, 𝐴𝐷 𝐵𝐷
= 𝑜𝑟 𝐵𝐷 = 𝐴𝐷 ∙ 𝐶𝐷
 The length of the altitude is the geometric 𝐵𝐷 𝐶𝐷
mean between the segments of the
Smaller Triangle to Original Triangle
hypotenuse; and 𝐴𝐷 𝐴𝐵
 Each leg is the geometric mean between = 𝑜𝑟 𝐴𝐵 = 𝐴𝐷 ∙ 𝐴𝐶
𝐴𝐵 𝐴𝐶
the hypotenuse and the segment of the
hypotenuse that is adjacent to the leg. Bigger Triangle to Original Triangle
𝐶𝐷 𝐵𝐶
= 𝑜𝑟 𝐵𝐶 = 𝐶𝐷 ∙ 𝐴𝐶
Example. Find the missing lengths given: 𝐵𝐶 𝐴𝐶
𝒂 = 𝟒, 𝒄=𝟓

𝑎 = 𝑐𝑚 𝑛=𝑐−𝑚 ℎ = 𝑚𝑛 𝑏 = 𝑐𝑛
4 = 5𝑚 𝑛 = 5 − 3.2 ℎ = √(3.2)(1.8) 𝑏 = √(5)(1.8)
(4) = ( 5𝑚) 𝒏 = 𝟏. 𝟖
2 2
ℎ = 5.76 𝑏= 9
16 = 5𝑚 𝒉 = 𝟐. 𝟒 𝒃=𝟑
𝒎 = 𝟑. 𝟐

45-45-90 Right Triangle Theorem

2
In a 45-45-90 right triangle, each leg l is times the hypotenuse h, and the
2
hypotenuse h is 2 times each leg l.

1. Find AB if AC = 6 2. Find BC if AB = 10
AB = hypotenuse AB = AC ∙ 2 BC =
2
∙ AB
2
AC & BC = legs AB = 6 2 2
BC = ∙ 10
2
BC = 5 2

30-60-90 Right Triangle Theorem

In a 30-60-90 right triangle, the hypotenuse is twice the shorter leg and the longer
leg is 3 times the shorter leg.

1. Find AC and AB if BC = 4
AC = BC ∙ 3 AB = 2(BC)
AC = 4 3 AB = 2(4)
AB = 8
2. Find AC and BC if AB = 10
AB = 2(BC) AC = BC ∙ 3
10 = 2(BC) AC = 5 3
BC = 5
3. Find BC and AB if AC = 6
AC = BC ∙ 3 AB = 2(BC)
AB = hypotenuse 6 = BC ∙ 3 AB = 2(2 3)
AC = longer leg 6 3
BC = ∙ AB = 4 3
BC = shorter leg 3 3
6 3
BC =

BC = 2 3

ACTIVITY 1 You Complete Me!

Direction: Complete the following statements based on the following illustrations.

1. AB + BC =

𝐵𝐶 𝐶𝐷
2. =
𝐶𝐷 ⬚

3. = 𝐴𝐵 ∙ 𝐵𝐶
⬚ 𝐴𝐶
4. =
𝐴𝐵 𝐴𝐷

5. ΔACD ~ ~

Good job, mathlete! I know you can also complete the next activity.

ACTIVITY 2 What’s My Value?

Direction: Find the value of the following sides of a right triangle given ∆𝐿𝑉𝐸 and
the length of two sides. Use the right triangle similarity theorem.

1. If LV = 8 and LO = 3, then LE = _____.

2. If LO = 7 and OV = 2, then EO = _____.
3. If LV = 10 and OV = 4, then VE = _____.
4. If OV = 4 and OE = 6, then LO = _____.
5. If LE = 12 and LO = 8, then LV = _____.
Well done, mathlete! Now, how about finding the missing lengths of special right triangles?

ACTIVITY 3 I Feel You, You Fill Me!

Direction: Fill in the blanks with their measures using the special right triangle theorems
(45-45-90 and 30-60-90 right triangle theorems).

Congratulations mathlete for taking the challenge to complete the activities. Good job!
