Reflection
The big idea for my unit focuses on establishing a purpose for language learning
beyond basic interpersonal communication by placing it in an academic context
related to a specific genre of literature. Thinking and questioning generated by the
essential questions will lead them to discover elements and features of folktales
and how to incorporate them in their own writing and culminating
performances/presentations in creative ways. As we explore the language and
stories, students make personal connections to folktale-like stories in their own
culture which aligns with knowledge about folktales and features of the genre
identified for the unit:
As newcomers and ELs they will also develop pronunciation, vocabulary, reading
fluency and comprehension skills through varied and multiple interactions with
selected texts in small groups and teacher-led whole group experiences. By
analyzing character traits and actions, retelling orally and in writing and discussing
opinions about the story’s message, students continue to practice language and
construct their own meaning about its purpose in this academic context. All of
these align with the skills identified for the unit: If students can use the targeted
language accurately and in a way that conveys meaning in a story that includes all
the elements and features of the genre nuanced by how they personally answered
the essential questions and creatively approached the task, it would be considered a
successful learning experience aligned to the UbD framework.

Engaging Question(s)
