1. I found these three fields with by completing the prioritization grid (WCIYP) for
transferrable skills. I first completed the worksheet that had you find patterns of skills
you used in your career story cards. I plugged the ones that I used in almost all of the
stories and then I prioritized them. My top one was “control, expedite things”. The next
two were a tie between “solve problems” and “communicate well in person”. Then, I
searched on google “careers with” and plugged in each transferrable skill. I was always
interested in teaching, but sales and marketing stuck out to me because they value
relationships and people skills, which I discovered was one of the work values I valued
most with the Career One Stop “Work Values Matcher”.

Narrowing Job Fields

Sales
1. Real Estate Broker: I found this occupation on Onetonline when I plugged in “Sales” in
the “Job Family” search bar. Real Estate has always interested me because a large part of
it is forming and maintaining relationships with people. I would want to be a real estate
broker because I am interested in the commercial side of real estate sales. I have a friend
who is in the commercial side, and he told me in his specific line of work, he works with
practically the same buyers every time. This would mean I would be able to form more
intimate relationships with my clients. There is also room to move up in this industry in
terms of “it is what you make it”, and persistence and patience are key which are two
traits I have.

Marketing
1. Advertising and Promotions Manager: One facet that I find interesting about
advertising is how human psychology is strategically used. I have taken many
psychology classes and loved them that gave me a firm understanding of human
psychology and behavior. In this field, you collaborate with a team to design promotions
and advertisements. I value teamwork and like to bounce and coordinate other ideas into
proposed projects. I have grown up in the age of technology and I have the skills needed
and am comfortable navigating and manipulating these platforms.

Teaching
1. Adult Basic Education, Adult Secondary Education, & English as a Second
Language Instructors: Right now, I want to apply for my Master’s in Secondary
Education with a Teaching Certificate. What drew me to being a teacher is being able to
lead a diverse classroom where I can hopefully change someone’s life. I was a TA in high
school, and I really enjoyed mentoring the students and tutoring them. I liked how the
teacher was able to show their personality and creativity through their individual lesson
plans. I chose secondary education because high school and beyond are important years
of your life where you need firm guidance and a strong foundation of each subject you
are learning. I also want to make a difference in my community where this is an influx of
immigrants who aren’t comfortable with speaking, reading, and writing in English.

3
Companies for My Specific Fields

Sales
1. Google: This company is one of the largest tech companies that started off as just a
search engine platforms but now provides internet services and products like Google
Drive, Gmail, Google Home, and Pixel phones, to name a few. Google is continuously
regarded as one of the best tech companies to work for because of it offers programs to
grow your skills within the company, fosters a diverse company culture, and offers great
employee compensation. I would want to work there because of the work-life balance,
and they offer jobs at hundreds of locations domestically and globally, allowing me to
travel and experience new places.

2. Slack: A cloud-based communication platform used by business of all types and sizes
like Uber and Target. It is known for revolutionizing and streamlining intracompany
communication in real-time. I like how it offers remote and flexible job opportunities and
a range of benefits like PTO and healthcare. I like that it is a tech company that is
innovating current cloud-computing technology which is a flourishing industry at the
moment. It also has job-openings across the U.S. and in multiple other countries as a
Business Development Representative.

Marketing
1. UM Worldwide: A creative media agency that combines data and content with science
and art to make effective media content for some of the world’s largest companies. They
pride themselves on Diversity and Equity and was named Fortune Best Workplace in in
Advertising & Marketing. I like that they value impact, imagination, and individuality (as
stated on their website). They offer jobs in in Client Services in multiple big cities like
NYC and London.

2. Merkle: A technology company that partners with companies across a variety of

industries to help companies use data to optimize customer experience. They offer jobs
working with clients on Salesforce Service Cloud, optimizing their data storage and
customizing it to their business needs. Most of their available jobs are fully remote
working with clients in Colombia and New York City.

Teaching
1. Global LT: A worldwide services provider of language training and skills with its
headquarters in Troy, MI. They outsource language teachers to young students looking to
learn the target language. They offer jobs for onboarding teachers across the world and
help you relocate. They also offer remote and virtual teaching, which would be useful if I
am not quite ready to relocate out of the country. I like that their start dates are flexible,

and you would be working private or semi-privately with one or two children. It is
freelance work and advertises competitive pay. I am currently interested in a posting in
Guaynabo Municipio, PR.

2. Miami International Language Academy: An English immersion school offering ESL

teaching jobs across multiple cities in Florida. There are a variety of hours you can work,
depending on the job-opening and you receive a hiring bonus of $1,500, as well as PTO. I
would like to work here because of the opportunity to be a part of an immersion school
which is a teaching methodology that is highly regarded in TESOL pedagogy.

Narrative
All of these companies value the skills I would bring to the table like strong communication
skills, problem solving, and adaptability. I was drawn to these companies because they all
offered PTO, which I discovered is a benefit that is of a high priority to me by doing the self-
inventory assignment. In You Can Do Anything, I learned that companies are actively
searching for liberal arts majors because they want a variety of people on their team. They
don’t want everyone to have an engineering degree at Google, for example. Another tip from
the readings advised that we need to “Get Rid of the Shoulds” and expand our search
beyond what others think we should do. These companies are some I would’ve never
considered if I stayed in my comfort zone. Upon doing my research, I have the skills
necessary to apply for job openings they offer.
