What is your inquiry question that interests you for further research? It should be a question that connects with
a purpose, passion or personalized area of interest for you. This is a question that you cannot just google an
answer for. Please see examples from your Capstone booklet.
My inquiry question is:

“Why is the process of art just as important as the product?”

Rationale/context: Detail your reasons for choosing this inquiry question. Explain WHY you are choosing to
investigate this topic as a major area of focus. How does this area of inquiry connect to your passion(s),
purpose? Why is it of personal interest to you?

With how quickly AI is developing, I want to set a reminder that the process in which art is made is an
integral part of how “good” a product is. I feel the most important part of art is that it is one of the most
striking ways of self-expression, and people tend to undermine that aspect by watering it down to simply
how visually pleasing the product is. By making this project, I want to ruminate on that and learn to explain
more in depth the importance of a person’s art process, and also demonstrate how the thoughts and efforts
that were put behind it further add to an art piece’s meaning and value.

Background: What background knowledge/connections/prior learning do you have in this area of inquiry?

I’ve always been an artistic person, and have years of experience in this field. I’m well-versed with mostly
anything creative, and can provide good insight in anything of that regard.

Career connections: What is your intended career area at this point in time? What connections does this
inquiry question have to your life, academic and/ or career goals?

Adding onto the previous question, I’ve had my heart set on pursuing art from as early as kindergarten.
Though I’ve had second thoughts on a few occasions, this is ultimately what I’m most passionate about,
and I have no doubt that completing this project will serve as a big learning experience, and a good
addition to my portfolio.

Description of my Capstone project. Specific Project Details of the Capstone Project: what will you
research, create, study, produce, solve, investigate? What product will be produced at the end of this
project for evaluation. Write a one-page description outlining your proposal.

My capstone will consist of three things; a translation of a 189-page book called Gu’s Proof (no official
translation), 3 minute and 47 second animation about it, and a documentation video outlining my
process and thoughts. For the project I will study more on animation before making it, collect reference
material from preexisting works, and consult my previous mentors on the best ways to go about the
project.

BOOK TRANSLATION:
I will re-read the book as I translate it, subsequently writing down the rough timeline the animation should
follow, and key plot points I want to depict. I’ll search for other Korean-translated books and compare what
other translators have done for certain expressions and words, to ensure I deliver the lines the way the
author meant to, and that nothing gets lost in translation. It will be read from a physical copy, and typed
into Google docs, each line carefully considered and researched before being moved past.

I will make use of Korean-to-English dictionaries online for words I’m unsure of, but will not paste
sentences into a translator to avoid dull translation or inaccuracies.

ANIMATION:
As the characters in the novel have no official look other than word descriptions, I will create a reference
page for the characters before getting started, which should only take a day or two at best. This could also
deepen my character designing skills, which is something I’m not well-versed in.

There are many tutorials and tips online on how to effectively create a short movie, and the fundamentals
of animation, so I will do substantial research before starting instead of jumping in blind. Through trial and
error, I’ll also be able to study first-hand what looks good and what doesn’t, and tweak the details until I
learn from it and end up with a result I’m happy with.

I’ll also investigate others’ art capstones for better insight on what works, and what doesn’t.

I’ve never put lengthy effort into making an animation, so from this I hope to learn how to dedicate myself
for a long time to creating something big instead of creating small projects as I always have.

DOCUMENTATION:
As stated, there will be a final video where I show my making process. It will break down all of the above
from how I discovered the book, how I felt reading it, how much it means to me, a timelapse of the
translation and making of the video, and will also be edited on Adobe After Effects with captions below with
my thoughts and comments.

Though I already know how to use the program, I’ll do some further research on how I can edit it in a more
documentative way such as how it should be timed, formatted, etc.

For final evaluation, there will be two videos posted on YouTube (under a channel of my name), and a
pdf/google docs linked in the channel description of my full translation of the book. The book should be
read before the videos, and the videos in chronological order for better context.

Resources/ Technology/Skills: Make an assessment of the resources, technology and skills you will
need to be able to complete this project. What is your plan to be able to access/learn all of the resources
necessary to achieve completion of this project? Detail your plans.

For this, I need to use a program on my computer at home, meaning I largely won’t be able to work on it
at school unless translating the book, so I will manage my time accordingly. I have a drawing tablet at
home I can work with, giving me plenty of time to work on it during my free time. I also need better time
management skills, and discipline myself to finish accordingly to my plan.

Mentors/Community Connections: What types of mentor(s)/community connections will you need to

help you complete your capstone project? How will your mentor(s) help you? What is your plan to access
the mentorship/community connections necessary for this project?

I used to attend an art institute and have mentor connections there. They’re proficient in sending their
students to art schools and guiding them through improvement and portfolio-making, and I can contact
them again for any needs.

Project limitations: What are some project limitations and potential obstacles that you foresee that might
affect progress with your Capstone Project?

I fear I might be short on time, as I can go a little overboard. To prevent this, I plan on forcing myself to
meet strict deadlines for each portion of my process.

Other considerations: List and detail any other related information/ considerations about your project
that you feel should be included in your project proposal.

I don’t think I have to do extensive research prior to making this as I am fairly confident I already know
what I’m doing, so I won’t be able to provide a substantial amount of sources afterwards.

References: Provide a literature review of 5-10 PEER REVIEWED ACADEMIC references: research,
videos, etc. that offer some preliminary research you have done for your project that shows you are able
to access the key information that you will need to be able to complete this project/work. Along with
providing the source, you will need to provide a description of what the source is good for and how you
may use it. Your list should be written using correct APA formatting.
