DISCOURSE ANALYSIS

Overview
By Mtra. Luisa Hernández alcudia
MAIN CONCEPT

The Oxford English Dictionary defines

discourse analysis as: "Linguistics, a method
of analysing the structure of texts or
utterances longer than one sentence, taking
into account both their linguistic content
and their sociolinguistic context; analysis
performed using this method."
DIFERENT DEFINITIONS
Schi rin et Al (2003) Note that there are
“three main categories” of discourse
de nitions.

1) anything beyond the sentence. (Linguistic

features)

2) language in use, and (how people go

about doing language in context)

3) a broader range of social practice that

includes nonlinguistics and nonspeci c
instances of language.

DEFINITIONS FROM DIFFERENT PERSPECTIVES

Widdowson (1984: 100), for example, de nes discourse as “a communicative

process by means of interaction.” This de nition is very simple. For Widdowson,
discourse is a communicative process manifested through interaction. The
de nition can be understood to say that discourse is a process of communication.

Gumperz. Gumperz (1977: 17) de nes discourse as “certain communication

routines which are viewed as distinct wholes, separated from other types of
discourse, characterized by special rules of speech and non-verbal behavior, and
often distinguished by clearly recognized openings and closings.”
