CHAPTER I

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

Introduction

All modern civilizations depend heavily on education; it is an essential part of

any modern society around the world. One of the essential Ingredient of education is
8

attendance. Attendance systems in Philippines are mostly manual and paper based

which means the process from marking attendance to calculating attendance is fully

manual. It is not fully reliable because it may sometimes cause errors and it consumes

more time. This is where the RFID Attendance System comes in.

RFID attendance systems have completely changed the way that attendance is

managed in a variety of industries, including enterprises, organizations, and

educational institutions. Modern technology has replaced antiquated manual

processes like labor-intensive data entry and paper-based attendance records,

ushering in an era of unmatched efficiency and accuracy. An RFID attendance system

is a technology-driven solution designed for monitoring and recording attendance in

various settings. RFID, which stands for Radio-Frequency Identification, utilizes

wireless communication to identify and track the student’s time in and time out.

In the context of an attendance system, RFID technology is often employed to

streamline the process of tracking and managing attendance. The system typically

consists of RFID tags or cards assigned to the selected students and RFID readers

strategically placed at entry points or designated areas. An innovative and cutting-

edge method of keeping track of attendance is through RFID attendance systems.

These systems provide a smooth fusion of accuracy and convenience in a time when

technology is changing many facets of our lives.

The core functionality of an RFID attendance system is its capacity to collect

attendance information with the least amount of interference. Participants' digital

identities are represented by RFID-enabled cards or tags that they carry. People pass
9

through pre-designated checkpoints that have RFID readers installed, and the system

instantly logs them in, saving time on manual record-keeping.

time information. Their adaptability and integration capabilities make them a

valuable tool in attendance management across various industries and settings.

Theoretical Framework

Researchers employ theoretical frameworks to establish connections among

diverse data points, validating or challenging their assertions. This information aids in

gaining a deeper comprehension of the applied ideas and concepts within the study's

subject matter. The theoretical framework functions as a comprehensive structure,

directing attention towards specific components. It lays the groundwork for

12

formulating hypotheses and determining the research strategies employed in the

study.

Figure 1. Theoretical Framework

This model proposes that students' perceptions of the system's usefulness and

ease of use significantly influence their attitudes and intentions toward using the

advanced attendance tracking system. A positive attitude and intention lead to actual

usage of the system for attendance monitoring. External variables like the educational

environment and technical support might influence these perceptions and subsequently

impact system usage among students. Understanding and addressing these constructs

can contribute to successful implementation and acceptance of the ATTUNE project

among Diploma in Computer Engineering Technology students at PUP Lopez, Quezon

Branch.
13

Information system use, takes a variety of theoretical perspective. Of all the

theories, the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) is considered the most influential

and commonly employed theory for describing an individual’s acceptance of

information systems. TAM assumes that an individual’s information systems

acceptance is determined by these major variables: Perceived usefulness, which in this

study measured by students’ responses towards how useful the ATTUNE system is in

improving attendance monitoring compared to traditional methods. Perceived Ease of

Use, which in this study measured by students’ responses towards how easy it is to use

the ATTUNE system without much effort. Actual System Use, which in this study

measured by students towards the consistency of using the system to record their

attendance and track their history.

Assoc. Prof. Ronaldo G. Bulfa, MBA
Branch Director
This University

Dear Assoc. Prof. Bulfa,

This is a letter from the Diploma in Computer Engineering Technology
researchers to request your approval and assistance to develop an advanced
attendance tracking system at PUP Lopez. The goal of this suggested system is to
improve the way that organizations, businesses, and educational institutions handle
attendance.
The primary goal of this study is to track student attendance, with the ability for
teachers to track attendance via ATTUNE and their own system. The school will
benefit from the system since it includes an advanced attendance tracking system that
will automatically recognize each student's ID card and track their attendance. The
project is an excellent invention that will enhance the image of computer engineers
and inspire other engineering students to innovate the system or invent new things. In
summary, advanced attendance tracking systems offer numerous benefits, from
improving accuracy and efficiency to enhancing security and providing real-time
44

information. Their adaptability and integration capabilities make them a valuable tool
in attendance management across various industries and settings.
Thank you for considering our request. We look forward to the
opportunity to discuss this proposal in greater detail and to work together towards a
safer and more secure campus environment.

Yours sincerely,

The Researchers
