INTRODUCTION

Social media is a platform that you can use every day to communicate. It has been useful
in many ways. It refers to an interactive technology that enable individuals to create and
distribute ideas, materials, hobbies, and other kinds of expression via online groups and
networks. The main purpose of social media is to bring people closer digitally using wireless
communication to replace early social media tools such as telephones. Social media has become
powerful in today’s generation. It is commonly used in everyday life, as if it were already part of
our lives. It has also been useful for the students to gather and share information, and social
media makes their lives easier. But it can have a negative effect on an individual. As time goes
by, social media continues to evolve day by day, yet it is continuing to affect the behavior of
individuals. Social media can spread fake news, which can lead to wrong news, negativity that
can affect someone’s mental state or health, and other information that can be considered social
media illiterate. This can have a huge impact on someone and can also affect the behavior of a
kid. It can influence behavior and mold the mind of someone into negativity. With the rapid
growth of social media, it continues to spread fake information to individuals, which leads to the
misinterpretation of a social media user. Social media platforms have also been used to spread
links to cyber scams. Social media is also a way for identity theft, where they can use your
information for fraud. But there are ways to be safe from fraud and identity theft. We need to be
observant and illiterate when clicking unnecessary or unusual links we can find on different social
media platforms. Also, don’t put personal information on your social media.

HISTORY OF SOCIAL MEDIA

The term “Social Media” originated from the combination of the words "social,” which simply
means the interactions between people, “and media,” which refers to communication channels.
The term was first used by Darell Berry while developing Matisse, an online media environment,
in 1995. The common starting point of Social Media was Samuel Morse’s first telegraph which he
sent in 1844. However, it did not take place as “online” and was not qualified as social media.
Telegraph was used to send individual message between 2 people. But, this is where it was
started. The real social media was started in 1970’s. In 1997, Andrew Weinreich, was sometimes
referred as the Father of Social Media, created the platform Six Degrees, the first online social
media. This was created to connect to everyone else in the world. Six Degrees allowed people to
sign up, create a profile and send message and add to their personal network. It was last until
2001, and number of users peaked at 3.5 million. It was bought by YouthStream, which was shut
down just one year later. After the shutdown of Six Degrees, years later, Friendster site
emerged to compete with Six Degrees. It also allowed people to sign up in e-mail, make friends
and send message just like the Six Degrees. Friendster had over 3 million users, and actually
reaching over one hundred million. In 2011, it was rebranded as a social gaming site. Alongside,
it was competing sites like Google, Yahoo!, and Facebook, but it was doomed to fail. in 2015, it
suspended all of its services, and on January 1, 2019, it officially closed its door. On December
28, 2002, LinkedIn was one founded. It was the first social media sites in history. This was
founded by Reid Hoffman, Allen Blue, Konstantin Guericke, Eric Ly and Jean-Luc Valliant. It was
a site focused on professional networking, allowing people to connect with business and school
contacts, and even companies. LinkedIn has more than 575 million registered users and ranked
at 285 on the Alexa Ranking for most-visited sites. Of the original batch of social networking
sites, MySpace was the most popular and influential. This was launched on August 1, 2003, it
became the largest social media site in the world. It started as a file storage platform, but also
transitioned as an online social network. By 2005, larger companies began to show interest in
acquiring it. MySpace was sold for $580 million to New. Corp., a U.K-based media run by
Rupert Murdoch. In 2006, MySpace surpassed Google as the top visited website in world. After
the sale, it continued to grow and by 2009, it was generating around $800 million in revenue.
However, Facebook began to expand, and MySpace began to decline. Facebook replaced as
the top visited site in 2008. On February 4, 2004 by Mark Zuckerberg, with Eduardo Saverin,
Andrew McCollom, Dustin Moskovitz and Chris Hughes, Facebook was founded. This was
started as a social media site exclusive to Harvard students, and quickly spread to the rest of Ivy
League and as well as Stanford and MIT. After 2006, it was available to anyone claiming to be
above the age of 13, regardless of whether or not they had an affiliation with a university.
Facebook quickly grew, it ranks number 3 on the Alexa traffic rankings, behind Google and
YouTube. Facebook went public around 2012 and received a valuation of $104 billion, one of
the highest IPO valuations of all time. Facebook has acquired other sites like Giphy, Instagram,
and Whatsapp. This has over 2.6 billion active users, which means under 30 percent of entire
global population, and Facebook is the most famous social media platform in the world. In March
21, 2006, Twitter was created by Jack Dorsey, Noah Glass, Biz Stone, and Evan Williams.
Twitter has a character limits to only 140 character and was held onto until 2017. It went public in
2013 and was valued at $14.2 billion. Today, it has around 335 million active users. Meanwhile in
China, a social media platform Weibo was launched at 2009. A Facebook and Twitter hybrid,
over 400 million active users. At October 6, 2010, Instagram was launched by Kevin Systrom and
Mike Krieger. It separated itself from the becoming a smartphone-only app focusing on photos
and video sharing, and by only allowing photos to be framed in a square, and the restriction was
lifted in 2015. It grew quickly after its launch, over 1 million registered users in just 2 months.
Currently, it has 1 billion active users, which makes it the 6th most popular social media in the
world. Facebook bought Instagram for approximately $1 billion in cash and stock. Around
September 2011, Snapchat was launched by Evan Spiegel, Bobby Murphy, and Reggie Brown.
Its feature was that it allowed users to send photos to one another that would disappear shortly
after being opened. Snapchat also allows people to chat with one another as well as share a “24-
hour story,” which gives users the chance to post photos and videos and save them for one full
day. Currently, it has around 186 million active users, although it is particularly popular among
young people.
Social media history is relatively short in terms of time, and while there’s no doubt about
its positives and negatives. This doesn’t make it any less exciting or influential. Today, social
media is an integral part of how people connect with friends and family. Overall, there are some
2.62 billion social media users around the world, and this number is expected to grow to over 4
billion by 2025.
